How to break the pattern? For example whenever I have been depressed I have chosen abusive men or ruined jobs which has made things wose.

As you have discovered, making big decisions or even smaller ones, when depressed isnt a good idea.
If a person goes in and out of it, your question is easier to answer.
Do you have it sometimes and not others? Do you feel you make right decisions or at least better decisions, sometimes and not others?

I am making better decisions but most of it seems to revolve around patching up the enourmous mess I have made of life. At least im not in extreme amounts of emotional pain atm which helps!

I can only say to try and avoid making important decisions when depressed. I only had it for a very short while. But when I had it, I felt that the only big decisions I could manage was what to have for dinner. Anything else, in my case, literally, I deferred to my husband. Or if my mum was around, my mum. Anybody but me.
