how to get cbt

i am recieving a tel assesment from the healthy minds team and then it takes 6 weeks to see a counsellor i am thinking i would like to try cbt does this come on the nhs and how to do you get it

It depends what is available in your area, what your issues are and whether cbt would be classed as working for you. There may be group or individual cbt so if you happy to do group work do say as often waiting times are shorter for it. Because so many people want treatment there can be long waiting lists though

CBT is widely available in UK through your GP, though there may be a long wait.

Or if you want it quicker and can afford to go private, you can find a therapist here.

having just googled Healthy Minds teams, it looks like CBT will be one of the therapies offered as CBT is the therapy of choice for anxiety/ depression and related conditions at the moment.

Its anxiety just thinking if it maybe better than counselling

cbt is the best known talking therapy for anxiety so the healthy minds team will probably recommend it for you in some form. it might be computer cbt, group cbt or one to one with a cbt therapist. if you can wait to get it free then why not?!

what do you need to know?

usually the first session is about gathering information from you: what are you experiencing? E.g. how does your body feel when you're anxious, what thoughts do you have, what behaviour do you do? etc

then you'll work with a therapist to make a plan of how to tackle it. Usually there's 'homework' each week but nothing too involved! Stuff like, this week keep a diary of how you feel at certain times or this week practice breathing exercises when you feel anxious or whatever.

obviously it will all be tailored to your circumstances and the therapist will work with you, rather than telling you what to do.

Ultimately, it's about getting rid of unhelpful thinking patterns and replacing them with more helpful ways of approaching difficult situations.

oh, and it's usually 6-8 sessions on NHS, with more in more complex cases.

It doesn't work for everyone, but it really does help a lot of people.

I'm having 12 sessions of cbt on the nhs and have had 10 so far and will probably end up referring back to have more after the 12. You talk a lot and yes I have homework to do, sometimes on paper and sometimes practical such as facing up to something that scares you.

It sounds ideal feel i need to do something productive as a feel just overepeat my worries constantly to the point where everyone gets fed up with me after the 100th time i can understand

Yes it is good being able to talk in depth without being judged and having sensible suggestions made. I find it quite exhausting but good to finally get it all out.
