Just wondered if anyone has any experience of a mental health birth plan? I am meeting with my care coordinator, midwife and perinatal psychiatrist soon to do one and am a little apprehensive about what to expect. I have a diagnosis of bipolar mad bpd but am very well at the moment. I had my first child in a birthing centre with minimal medical intervention and it was very special. I would love for this birth to be similar. I would also love to breastfeed again but worry they will advise against it to allow more options with medication.

Anyone have any experience, would love to hear from you. X

I made one recently mine said that medication was only to be used if neccessary it detailed behaviours that I choose would mean meds were needed.

Even though I have Bipolar we decided if I went depressed that we would try anti depressants first under close supervision as I was bf. Now I take olanzapine which is a anti pysch while bf.

Thanks crawling for your experience. Did you find it helpful? Do you think your meds affect your baby at all? I came of meds to conceive and for first trimester but have needed to go back on quetiapine. The intention is to stay on through delivery and continue on it when breastfeeding but i have read it can make baby drowsy especially after birth. Bit scared but want to make the best decision for both of us.

I havent found it effected my baby at all but I was able to go 6months post birth before I had to have meds. But at 6months my baby was fine. I found it useful being able to take anti ds at first as it meant I had less worry about them effecting my baby. I found my plan very useful as it put me in control. Good luck.
