Beta Blockers for anxiety?

Hi after suffering from anxiety for a few years I finally went to see my GP. He gave me 35mg of Atenolol which had no affect so today I went to see him and he gave me 50mg and sleeping tablets Zopiclone 7.5 mg.
I've googled (someone stop me!) and not sure beta blockers are the way forward. They have helped the physical symptoms of anxiety to some extent but I still feel anxious and not sure I want to just take an increased dosage. Also the consensus on the sleeping tablets is that they completely knock you out and you have complete amnesia the next day. The thought of not being aware or having control is exacerbating my anxiety.
I don't want to just control the physical symptoms to be honest, I want to stop being anxious but my GP wouldn't give me anything other than beta blockers. Is this is a normal thing to be prescribed for anxiety? Will the increased dosage work or is there something better I cna take to stop the actual anxiety issue?
I'm feeling panicky all the time and I hate this :(

sorry don't mean to drip feed but I'm not sur ethat anxiety is completely my issue as well. I am so up and down, manic one minute, utterly crap feeling the next. is that linked to anxiety?

Beta blockers are standard. My GP was going to give them to me but couldn't as I have asthma.

Don't worry about the zopiclone. I took them and they are better than nytol. I had little side effects with zopiclone but nytol made me.horribly drowsy the next.day.

7.5 is a bit much though: cut in half and try that.
