Emetophobia - my worst nightmare

Ds1 goes to a school set on several different sites. Today one of the sites has been closed for deep cleaning due to norovirus wiping out hundreds of children this week. There are loads of siblings in ds1's building/class and 8 of his classmates were off today.

I am a single parent (really outing myself here!) and terrified of what feels completely inevitable right now. I was awake all night last night, waiting. Shall be doing the same again tonight.

You know, I feel like I have improved a lot with my emetophobia recently. I am no longer worried about the odd v. It's the awful, debilitating violence of noro that terrifies the life out of me.

The waiting is utter torture Sad

I have a question. This vile bug is still going around here. My friend's little girl who was here on Saturday has been sick this evening. Another friend who I go to college with on a Monday texted me today to say 'I have the d&v bug'. So back in terror mode again. But DH has this theory that as a bug gets passed around, and as time passes, it gets weaker? Is that true or is he just trying to cheer me up??

Badvocsanta · 19/11/2012 20:23

I don't really know a lot about viral loading but I am not sure the 48 hour thing is right (sorry)
Ds1 caught ds2s sick bug 3.5 days after ds2 and when ds1 had it as a 2 year old it was a week til I came down with it.
There seems to be 2 bugs doing the rounds her atm...noro and another sickness bug with temp and aches.
Lots of coughs and colds too.
It may well get weaker. After time but no idea what that timeframe is.

stef06 · 19/11/2012 20:39

So ds was sick on Friday night and at 9 Saturday morning and he's just had a whitey creamy colourd poo is this normal?

Marne · 19/11/2012 21:29

Apparently your not contagious until you have had d or v (not before).

Traces of v can hang around (the bug can survive) in someones mouth for 24-48 hours (so they can pass the bug on)

The bug can survive in carpets, on bedding, on clothes for up to 18 days.

So if someone is sick in yoUr house and its not cleaned up properly it is likely for another family member to come down with it after the 48 hours.

Please note- i am going by what i have researched over the net in the past few years , so this may not be 100% correct.

Stef- the creamy poo is totaly normal after a bug, i would chuck some bleach down the loo Grin.

Marne · 19/11/2012 21:33

And i'm not sure about a bug loosing its strength as its passed on, i think it depends a lot on the persons amune system and how the person picked it up. It is possable to get the bug and not vomit (even more so if you have the phobia as it takes a lot to make a Emetophobe sick), taking probiotics and vitimins could help you fight off the bug with less symptoms.

Badvocsanta · 20/11/2012 07:45

Stef...yea that can be normal after a sickness bug as the vile duct hasn't replaced the vile you have lost from vomiting. It's the bile that gives poo it's colour.
Ds2 did a white pop after his bug too.
Keep an eye in it and if it happens again then maybe ask go advice but as a one off, nothing to worry about.

Badvocsanta · 20/11/2012 07:46

Bile, not vile!! :)

SilverSky · 20/11/2012 09:11

Having felt flu like since Friday it culminated in me being hideously sick last night. Sad

Sometimes the flu can make me have a sore tummy anyway but was not expecting to be ill.

Him Indoors now feels sick. Sad

I felt better almost right away but still feel v queasy this morning. Giving ds1 his breakfast is proving challenging.

BeckyBendyLegs · 20/11/2012 10:36

Stef white poo is normal after a bug.

SilverSky I feel for you. Poor you. Sorry you've been sick :(

liveinazoo · 20/11/2012 13:04

silversky gllad you felt better afterwards, thoguh im sure thats not much comfortSad
another odd question....

i may be losing the plot completely one mydamn cats got upstairs monday pm and went straight into the kids room and jumped on the bedi havent changed bedding sincethey were ill as i wait a week or so to make sure they are properly better
i panicked and htey chased cat to stairs andi shooed him out.

im too scared to let him in again as im worrid he has germs from teh bedding on his fur and will make me ill rub against stuff itouch etcBlush
WWYD?

kerstina · 20/11/2012 13:49

I get your logic but because you are so good on your handwashing before preparing food and eating you will not get the bug. Also don't forget cats are very clean creatures they spend ages licking themselves and I bet their saliva kills a lot of bugs off Smile

SilverSky · 20/11/2012 13:51

I'd let the cat in. He's prob groomed himself by now.

Him Indoors has now vomited. As has the baby. Just the toddler left. Tho toddler was randomly ill last weekend so perhaps we got it from him and he won't be sick. Bloody hope so.

InNeedOfBrandy · 20/11/2012 13:54

I get your logic zoo, I agree the cat will have groomed itself by now. I would chuck a bucket of soapy water over it first

roundabout1 · 20/11/2012 14:47

silversky - Oh no, never mind if its working its way through the house quickly, you will all be better quicker, not much consolation now though.

I am aiming to prepare in case the dreaded bug arrives. If anti bac sprays don't kill it does the flash type spray with bleach? I have only Dettol anti bacterial spray & bleach for the toilet at the moment. Also how do you clean carpets etc? I'm hoping that by preparing for the scenario, it will make me feel more in control of it. With me its the fear of vomiting (& other people) but also the lack of control so I majorly stress over our 1 bathroom if we all get it at the same time etc etc.

reastie · 20/11/2012 18:22

Silversky I'm so sorry, how horrible for you Sad . I hope you all feel better soon. Feel for you, I really do. You sound like you're coping though (??)

roundabout bleach will kill it so I assume flash with bleach should be fine. I used domestos bleach spray cleaner but I've nearly run out Confused . If you look on a regular neat bleach bottle it has instructions for bleaching carpets. You have to dilute it alot though and probably do a test patch to check it's OK first too. I bleach clean our bathroom carpet (yes, I know, yuck, a bathroom carpet!) periodically with dilute bleach and love how the bathroom reeks of bleach for a few days afterwards

Zoo I'm not sure re: cat, I've never thought of it before. I would have thought it would be fine - the cat will be outside and rolling in goodness knows what (not to mention rain and cleaning itself) so will rub off anything unlikely but potentially bad. You make me Grin that I'm not the only one who worries about these kind of things (but also Sad for the fact we do IYWKIM)

Well, feeling awfully exhausted after todays day at work in the 'danger zone' of the tummy bug being where I work. I nearly burst into tears and turned round the car refusing to go into work this morning I was so nervous, and washed my hands at least 7 times in the space of half an hour at one point Blush . Massive shower as soon as I got home from work and madly hoping I will keep escaping it. I'm just jelly legged shaky now though, think it's all the stress of forcing myself into work.

BeaWheesht · 20/11/2012 18:43

Oh so silver sky. Hope you're feeling better.

SantasHugandRollintheSnow · 20/11/2012 19:17

silver sorry to hear you've had this and its in your house. I really hope it goes as quick as it came.

roundabout for me its a lot of the loss of control. I also panic about our one toilet in case we all get it at once.

roundabout1 · 20/11/2012 19:34

I love how this thread is making me feel normal. I knew others struggled with sickness but I thought it was just me that overcooked all meat & fish - except beef. Hardly eat out & get stressed out cooking chicken, if it wasn't for the kids loving it I wouldn't have it at all, or perhaps just chicken nuggets! It really is an all encompassing thing. I too grill my dd when she comes home from school about if anyone was off. Had a panic when I picked up dd from school as her best friend & 2 friends didn;t come outwith her. I envisaged them very ill with a nasty bug but no it was gym club!!

stef06 · 20/11/2012 22:37

I'm exactly the same with chicken I thought it was just me /:. So my house has been clear of sick since 5.30pm on Saturday so I was just wondering what are the chances of me catching it of something like a tv button or door?

stef06 · 20/11/2012 22:40

Is it just me or does everyone on here feel like sick is attracted to them? Everytime I watch tele someone seems to be sick an if its not that it's on the side walk or the car infront of me at the McDonalds drive thought or someone in my house :'(

InNeedOfBrandy · 20/11/2012 22:43

I really feel sick follows me to stef!

I have a meat thermometer for my chicken. I know when chicken is cooked it falls off the bone. So when it's falling off the bone and my meat thermometer tells me its cooked I am fine with it. I don't really eat chicken out although KFC is fine because it falls off the bone.

SantasHugandRollintheSnow · 20/11/2012 22:55

in need when I saw the preview of your message in "threads I'm on" I read it as "I feel really sick" and got palpitations. We prob don't live anywhere near each other and I worried id catch it. You didn't even write that and I'm one of the only medicated ones on here

InNeedOfBrandy · 20/11/2012 22:57

I get that to santa. And I irrationally blamed this thread for ds getting sick. I obviously know it would of happened anyway but it's the thinking about it and talking about it and bringing it on yourself paranoia.

stef06 · 21/11/2012 08:07

I have to go to my sons school for lunch today! I'm panicking :(

liveinazoo · 21/11/2012 08:35

big hugs to everyone who needs it
will let my furry fiend in laterWink

stefeveryone on here is amazingly brave when we have to be.you mustve agred to go and your boys will apprecaite you being there.be things of you and here while you sit out the" counting game" of will i be ill.x

oh and someone said bleach kills all so wipe tv remote with that and should be fine

silverim so sorry.you sound far more together than i did when mine dropped if thats any consilation!?

do you think if we clubbed together we could buy shares in domestos and make some money from our habits?
