Citalopram and breastfeeding

My doctor prescribed me Citalopram 20mg today. I checked with him if it was ok with breastfeeding and he said yes. Having looked at the internet tonight I've read things saying it's not ok. Do any of you have any advice or have used it while breastfeeding? I've taken one tablet this afternoon (Friday) and was going to build it up gradually so was going to take another one on Sunday. Should I wait and check with the surgery/chemist on Monday? Thanks for any help x

I breastfed on it. In fact my psychiatrist got the GP to prescribe it because she said it was safe.

It is impossible to fully test the safety of drugs on lactating mothers (think about the moral issues) but my youngest DS who was fed it is now 3 and appears absolutely fine.

Frankly if it helps keep you ok and allows you to feed as you want and it has been prescribed by a doctor I'd say it was more than fine. Don't believe the internet. You can find anyone saying anything here!

Hi - yes it was one I was offered for breastfeeding. Hope it helps.

Thank u! I've been taking it and feeding, just kept an eye out for any feeding changes from my baby. None yet so I'm hoping all is well. The only difference this week is he only put on 1oz in a week (he's 11wks and been gaining about 1/2 lb a week till now. Like I said before I've not noticed any feeding changes and he's not been grouchy as if he's not fed enough. Not sure why the small weight gain. I'll see what happens at next weeks weigh-in.

I breastfeed on it as we speak, DD is 6 months old now. Also on 20mg. No problems and constant weight gain throughout. Good luck OP.

I don't mean the same weight gain every week mind...She has just more or less tracked the same centile. She's had duff weeks too where she's not put so much on. See what happens at weigh in, like you say?

Hi my little one is 29 weeks now and his weight gain changed constantly in those first 4 months. In fact after 3 months they told me to only go to weigh once a month as all was ok and things alter so much each week that we can worry without needing to - as long as they roughly track a centile they don't worry.

Hope it is ok for you.

Thank you everyone. I'm feeling much more reassured now after your comments x
