Raised prolactin levels

Does anyone know what this means with regards to taking antipsychotics, e.g. does it mean changing/reducing meds?

Hi. Prolactin is basically the hormone that triggers milk production after giving birth which i.e. Breast milk. If you aren't pregnant, high levels will produce this effect, as well as supressing fertility. Prolactin is regulated by the pituitary gland in the brain. Excess can cause problems there too if not regulated. Good news is it's really easy to treat. I have mega high prolactin levels naturally which caused me infertility. Standard treatment is Bromocriptine Meseylate aka Parlodel. As this is a well known side effect for anti-p your doc should be well versed on how to compensate so don't worry! In the first instance a simple standard blood test is used to monitor levels to see if levels are too high. Discuss with your doc and pls try not to worry about it!

Thanks WithanAnotE. I know what my level is, I was just wondering because my Gp said it means she needs to discuss with my psychiatrist, but she's on leave as of today.

Meds to lower prolactin can impact on dopamine levels in the brain too. Your GP needs the pschiatrist to determine if anything needs to be done, and if so the best meds, given your MH needs/meds.
Really, don't worry about it.
