What could be different in mental health care, what helps, and what have you found to be useful reading?

First off - this is a thread inspired by another thread - not about another thread.

I am a lecturer who teaches mainly MH nursing students, but also Adult, Child and Learning Disability field nurses about MH, and also occasionally medical students. I have no agenda for this thread bar a genuine desire to listen, share ideas, and have an open discussion about what is helpful / less so. I worked in NHS MH for 13 odd years.

In case anyone links the other threads that inspired this thread - I have been comissioned to edit a book about people's experiences (service users and carers / family / friends) within MH services and with MH issues. NONE OF THE POSTS HERE WILL BE USED IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM FOR THIS BOOK. You have my ABSOLUTE word on that. Similarly, NONE of the posts here will be used in any of my teaching.

My aim in starting this stems from several PM's and several on-thread comments about how this would be useful/ I hope it can be a helpful, supportive and productive meeting place for thoughts and ideas about what people have found helpful with regards MH care / services / support (statutory and non statutory) and what has been less helpful. Most importantly with regards the less helpful - what can be done differently?

And - beacuse I like books - maybe we can share reading ideas :)

Would it be helpful if I shared parts of my long thread from earlier regarding what I see as needed, without any other details from the thread?

Thanks for clarifying for me , garlic

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:45

Not sure we are sneering , math

RaisinDEritrea · 27/07/2012 18:46

This is pretty horrible reading now

Implying that someone holding an impassioned stance is somehow distressed and in need of the Samaritans

Horrid

aesopslabials · 27/07/2012 18:47

Aesop, you directed your partner to the thread and then she posted:

"Aesop is a skilled and well qualified person in the field of MH."

While you may not have been aware of it before it was posted, I dont find that appropriate, and could have asked for it to be removed if you didnt want to imply a professional MH background.

partner found thread and posted in her capacity as equalities expert.
if she posted what you said then it was probably because i was being told i was this that or the other. i have no prob with it being there or retracted. i am not posting any advice, nobody is my "patient" and i am here as another human being who has access to info and links that MAY help somebody. that is all.

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:48

I don't intend to be , Raisin nor to belittle any views resulting from distress . I'm sorry if I caused any upset .

Upwardandonward · 27/07/2012 18:48

I'm bring perfectly serious and calm - Om this forum it is valid to suggest outside help if someone appears distressed.

DollyTwat · 27/07/2012 18:49

I'm going to say it

Don't feed the troll folks

You actually posted it twice.

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:49

and very sorry if I play into anyone's hands by having said that , undoing patient effrts by others < ashamed >

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:50

It is valid ,Upward, and you always post in a very considered way here .

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:50

Thank you , Dolly

DollyTwat · 27/07/2012 18:51
Grin
MarygoeZforgold · 27/07/2012 18:52

If it wasn't so spectacularly unfunny, I would be saying that the bullying looks very much on the other foot at the moment Shock. That reference to the Samaritons coupled with references to feeding trolls isn't surely adhering to Mumsnet Talk Guidelines.

Upwardandonward · 27/07/2012 18:53

Mary, I am serious, I wouldn't have posted it otherwise.

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:53

I am expecting them to be deleted , Maryz-apologies to MnHQ

Upwardandonward · 27/07/2012 18:53

And I have said nothing about trolls.

MarygoeZforgold · 27/07/2012 18:53

And aesops, your partner was very disingenuous as in the same thread s/he specifically said s/he had found the thread accidentally by google, so some of your posts haven't been entirely honest Hmm.

RaisinDEritrea · 27/07/2012 18:53

Dolly to whom was the troll allusion made, please?

aesopslabials · 27/07/2012 18:53

"

Therapeutic relationships (and validation) can be between any two or more living creatures, even an animal and a person. One partner does not have to have a profession for validation to occur."

indeed. it is called PEER SUPPORT

"This is pretty horrible reading now

Horrid"

possibly. but then so is stating that people with mental health problems who complain about injustices are showing a symptom of illness. it that a distressed poster is "obviously" mentally ill when nobody could possibly know such a thing. as are the continual attempts to pick on people, invalidate people and provoke obsessively.

i suggest we take mnhq advice and just carry on with the thread and try not to let it be filled with this person's issues. oh the irony going from what it sprung from! (and i am suggesting that as a human being not a fucking "professional" math ok? )

DollyTwat · 27/07/2012 18:54

I haven't accused anyone of being one

Obviously if the cap fits ....

Just saying ...

mathanxiety · 27/07/2012 18:54

Aesop, you have made it abundantly clear that you think validation is appropriate as a therapy.

Did you or did you not provide this little gem:
'if you had the slightest clue what you were talking about then you would know that unconditional positive regard is considered good practice'

Implying there that while I may not have the slightest clue, you do.

'and it is impossible to say anymore over the net without knowing the person and working with them.'

So why then did you sit on your hands while Ow berated me for not validating the experiences of GB and others?

'there are psychiatrists who practice within a school of thought that will validate psychosis math.'

Here you lend the weight of the MH profession behind validation, despite the fact that you are not qualified to advocate one method over another.

'try reading up on it.'

Here you imply that you have read up on it.

'there are many many schools of thought within mental health and validating somebody elses experience is a very basic one because it is THEIR EXPERIENCE. whether you agree with that or not is not relevant, take it up with the psychiatrists who do go along with psychosis as a form of healing.'

Here you imply familiarity with various schools of psychiatric thought and endorsement of one in particular, despite the fact that you are not qualified to discuss those schools of thought

You are breaking the law when you present yourself as an individual with the necessary education and qualifications to evaluate and advise on different therapies.

sigh. i kicked her arse to COME BACK to the thread to talk about funding.

futuredream · 27/07/2012 18:54

mine , that is -not Upward's

MarygoeZforgold · 27/07/2012 18:56

No you didn't.

You referred her to the thread in the first place.

You know, at the start of this I thought you were well-intentioned if a bit misguided. I'm beginning to think I was naive.
