PND - are there alternatives to pills?

My sister has just been diagnosed as having moderate to severe PND. It's been going on a while as her son is nearly two.

She would really like to avoid anti-depressants as she knows several people who have been stuck on them for years and every time they have cut down, they have suffered panic attacks. She has had panic attacks in the past and is understandably reluctant to have them back.

I have been on anti depressants in the past and while they helped in the short term, I too had a hard time getting off them and can't imagine how hard that would be with kids (I was child free at the time).

So are there alternatives? Does counselling work? Or something other than anti-depressants?

Thanks for your help.
