Hearing Voices

My 14 year old DD has just revealed that she's started hearing voices. She's suffered from minor depression in the past and struggles with low self-esteem. Has anyone else any experience of this? I've found a great website called 'voices collective' for young people, but think it's going to take more than that....any thoughts?

Try not to panic. Voices do not always equal psychosis, schizophrenia and the fact that she's 14 with great hormonal surges is probably a contributing factor too. But it does sound like she's struggling and very anxious.

Has she told you what the nature of the voices are? Are they sinister etc? Are they frightening her?

I certainly think if she trusts you and it sounds as if she does, then a visit to the gp is a must.

My 15 yr old DD was admitted last year, with several problems including SH and being violent towards me. She also talked about hearing voices, but the MH team felt that the 'voices' were a result of not being able to handle having negative emotions such as being angry or upset, so she rationalised them as coming from outside of her. I'm not sure I've explained it very well. Has she been properly assessed by Camhs? If not she needs to be referred by her GP. I feel for you, you must be so scared, I know I was, but you must be proud that she felt able to tell you
