Hi

As the title says I have been on Citalopram 10mg for 2 weeks and not feeling any better and think I actually feel a bit worse. I know they take 2-6 weeks to kick in but am concerned that on such a low dose they just won't work

I initially asked the GP for 10mgs as was worried about side effects. I have an appointment with the GP today and am thinking about asking for an increase to 20mg?

I just need to start to feel better

So for anyone on Citalopram how long did if take to start working and what dose worked for you?

Thanks

hubby was on 20mg and it took a few weeks for it to kick in....he was fine...then as he got better he kept skipping doses and eventually stopped taking them against gp supervison....

take them as long as the gp prescribes and dont miss a dose...when you feel better for a few weeks/months etc then look at reducing the dose under gp supervison...agree 10 mg is very low

good luck sweetie and hope you get better soon xxx

10mg is enough for some people - my dh never went higher than that. But most need to go up to 20mg. It is a good idea to start at 10mg though as it gives you fewer side effects than going straight to 20.

It is definitely not strange to ask your GP if going up to 20 is a good idea.

Thanks Doormat and Madmouse. It's good to hear that they worked for both your dh's. I took Citalopram about 9 years ago and think I was on 20mg then so will definitely ask the GP about an increase.

Saw a different GP who agreed that 20mg was the right move. So will start on 20mg on Saturday as dp is off for the weekend incase I have any crappy side effects. Fingers crossed this will help

They will kick in soon - you need to give it more than two days. Get some exercise today, a walk or bike ride. And try to eat something nice and healthy x

Please stick with it. GP told me at least 6 weeks and she was right. YY to getting out in the fresh air and exercising.

The Citalopram has really worked for me. good luck.

Thanks for the advice. I think getting out and a bit of exercise is a good idea. Mum over helping me out with DD so will suggest we all go for a walk to get something nice for dinner. I just have no appetite at the moment (have lost over 2 stone in less than a year) so will try and find something I really fancy

I'm due back at work on Thursday and just really starting to worry about how I'm going to cope. I know the tablets take a while to kick in but just don't know how much longer I can go on like this. I just feel like I'm crumbling :(

I felt exactly the same Happy, just try and keep going and hopefully it will all be worth it. I so nearly gave up and I'm so glad I didn't.

It obliterated my appetite but once I felt better I started overeating. Sad But now feel I am back in control of that too. Smile

i was on 10mg for 2 weeks then went onto 20mg which i've been on now for 3 weeks.i'm going back next week for a review but tbh i still don't feel that they've made a great difference.regarding appetite i've found since i've been on them i've not got a huge appetite.i'm due to go back to work next week but am going to see if i can have 2 more weeks off [need to be assessed by occ' health first anyway and have been told it can take up to 2 weeks to see them].
hope you notice things getting better soon x

I started on 20mg (really tough going) then went to 30mg and I am now on 40mg. I feel normal again.

quirrelquarrel · 06/06/2012 11:59

I've been on 20mg for about two and a bit months and there haven't really been any effects, except I haven't had any really really low patches like I used to have, which I suppose is good....although now it's just a flat plain of no feelings, nothing.

OP- 10mg sounds v. low- I'm sure I read online that it can't do any good?

Hi, 56 year old chap here. Was prescribed Citalopram in August ‘20 for anxiety attacks and depression.
Would say they took about 5 weeks for me to feel a benefit. Worth pointing out though that I didn’t wake up one morning and think “wow.. everything’s rosy”, it’s definitely a gradual thing. My moods have levelled out and I’m a bit more optimistic than I was.
Take care but give it time and be kind to yourself..!
