Have not been on mumsnet for what seems like years, but i know ill get the ans i need on here and so am hoping you can help again.

I have been on prozac/Fluoxetine on and off for years for recurring depression and i also suffer with migraines that have worsened over the last few months.

Saw a new doc and he has taken me off the fluoxetine as does not think im depressed but over anxious which i agree with and had pescribed me the amitriptyline for my migraines along with imigran.

My concerns are however that this is a ad and therefore just using them for migraines means they are not in my system for that long as ive to take 10mg at night when suffering and stop when headache gone. I can also take some in day if migraine persists.

Ive taken them the last three nights and they totally knock me out. Ive always been an early riser but have slept in till eight the past two mornings and still feel tired in day so theres no way i could take in day time.

And is it ok to use them on and off, it just doesnt seem right somehow.

The Imigran is fab i've had migraines since the age of 12 and it has worked well for me unfortunately cant take it now as I'm on other meds as for the other don't know. The trick with imigran is to take it as soon as possible.

Did you take it just for migraines Dotty or every night? The imigran is just a powerful painkiller aimed at migraines but the doc said the amitriptyline is more of a preventitive.

Just migraines was on preventitive meds 14 years ago but couldn't drive anywhere dd1 was on liquid form at the same time she was 6 at the time, all I can take now is codeine but it only takes the edge off it.

I dont think that your current dose of amitriptyline will do anything for depression or anxiety I tried 20mg and did not find it helpful. It may help with migraine though. Hope you find something that suits (or indeed the amitriptyline works for you) getting the right meds can be tricky.

I am on amitriptyline 20mg for pain at night. I find the same as you, the first few knocked me out straight away but now I've been taking them for a while they don't make me sleepy now but I have a real hard time getting up in the morning. I've now started taking them much earlier at 8pm rather than just before bed and I'm hoping this will help
