how do i stop depression getting the better of me

i have been off meds citiopram now for 6 months, but every time i get bad news i seem to relapse.

how do i deal with life when it gets hard

Hi HappyPants What therapy have you had/counseling?

I found CBT and anger management has really helped me in the years since my last episode.

I have a triangle technique I use and I can easily detach myself from a difficult situation and deal with it later (without the children seeing me)

I use writing and reading as a distraction & I have someone I can talk openly to when things start to feel to much (DH)

It sounds like you would really benefit from some counselling, possibly CBT, to help with the way you think about bad news.

Also, and this may sound trite - it is normal to feel bad over bad news. People who have not been depressed are the same. It is likely that if you get bad news your responses follow the familiar tracks that the depression has worn in your brain. I see it in dh who has not been depressed for a long time. We both woke up grumpy after a bad night and argued over nothing. He immediately withdraws and says he cannot wait for the day to be over. He's not depressed, it is just how he has always responded.

Feeling ok today, I just get scared that depression will take over again and I don't want to go back into that dark hole.

I took a sleeping tablet yesterday and things look alot brighter today ( have not slept in over 2 weeks properly)

I guess bad things will happen and I should stop blaming myself
