Citalopram 40mg Long term side effects?

Sparklingbrook · 08/01/2012 09:12

Started on 20mg in July 2011, 30mg in September moved to 40mg in November.

Had lots of side effects when I first started but I seem to have retained a few-

Constipation
Clenched jaw at night
Feeling very hot for about 2 hours after waking
Vivid, bizarre dreams (not nightmares-just odd)

Anyone else? or is it just me? I must say the benefits far outweigh any of them.

I think I smacked DH in the face in my sleep. he said he thought I was rolling over but I probably wasn't. Sad

That's a good one sparklingbrook. I have to go and cook dss tea. I'm trying toad in the hole. I'm not very good a yorkshire pudding, but thought I would give it a go!

LoadOfTwaddle · 09/01/2012 17:47

I have taken my second tablet of Sertraline today, I Didn't sleep at all last night.

I have been yawning my head off at work wishing I could be in bed and now that I am I can't sleep!!

I hope this doesn't last long!!

cupofteaplease · 09/01/2012 17:51

I have just started zumba a couple of times a week and my mood has lifted quite a bit, add in the citalopram and I'm feeling pretty positive at the moment! Smile

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 17:59

Just stick with it Load it will all be worth it. Smile

Oooh cupoftea How do you do Zumba, do you not have the dreaded sweat?

serotoninbutterfly · 09/01/2012 18:17

If you do a DVD or on a console you can do it in the privacy of your own home... That's how I do it Grin
Don't want random strangers seeing me all sweaty!
I don't think I have hit DP in my sleep awake doesnt count but he sleeps so deeply I might not have noticed. Not used to dreaming in cinemascope, it's v odd and also sad that I cannot remember much about them... Not many are scary though which is a relief.
It's amazing what help a little exercise can be Grin

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 18:30

Tomorrow is the start of the exercise for me. Going to start doing my walk again. I want to lose 2 stone, because I am putting on weight again.

OP posts:
spanky2 · 09/01/2012 18:41

I need to lose two stone too. Can't keep blaming baby weight as he is 4 1/2! I quite like my dreams as they are more exciting than my real life. Although I don't like the scary ones much. The yorkshire pudding was okay.

The tablets are rubbish to begin with, but after about a week and a half you will notice small changes. Two years ago I was asleep for 18 hours and my awake time was spent in tears or panicking or shouting. I would hide all day in my bedroom with the curtains closed. I couldn't cope with even getting dressed or washing. So they are definately worth taking.

serotoninbutterfly · 09/01/2012 18:43

Sparkling, I found that citalopram killed my appetite (and sex life) for the first month or so, and now it's back!!

I am 2st over my ideal weight, and about 1/2 st over my pre-pregnancy weight.

DS is 20 months so no more excuses! Grin

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 18:48

DS2 is ten today. Blush I have lost the baby weight twice. this birthday cake is great though. Grin

Happy Birthday ds2!

serotoninbutterfly · 09/01/2012 19:17

Happy Birthday DS2! Am trying to diet, but just got a slow cooker and loving it!
Going to try rice pudding at some point, possibly Wednesday Grin cooking makes me happy.

spanky2 · 09/01/2012 19:25

I like to cook and eat too! Dh has gone out to get a couple of Kebabs, so much for the diet... We're telling ourselves it is grilled with salad!

xanthum · 09/01/2012 19:39

I'm also on Citalopram. It keeps me level so I've accepted that this is the way it's going to be! Don't mind but the the sweats!!! I have never put this together with the Citalopram at all. I thought I was just having tropical moments!! When I get up in the morning, I am so so hot and a shower just makes it worse.

Does anyone else get incredibly hot feet? I have to hang them out of the duvet at all times no matter how cold it is? I am so hot all day and can barely manage to wear a cardigan even when everyone else is shivering. Good in the winter but I dread the summer!

spanky2 · 09/01/2012 19:41

I get hot feet in the evening. I have to take my slippers and socks off.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 19:42

Thanks. I have actually enjoyed his birthday. He has a friend round and had pizza and cake. 6 months ago I couldn't have coped with birthdays and friends etc. Blush i do appreciate the positive effects the citalopram has had for my family.

Spanky, I'm the same. I hate the feeling of material on my feet! Sometimes I get a cold flannel and put it on the bottoms of my feet it is so bad! Then my raging feet heat the flannel up after a few minutes. Sorry guys, that's a bit gross!!

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 19:44

Welcome to the sweaty clique xanthum. Grin

I am on citalopram 20mg but to be honest I struggle still day to day with depression and anxiety, I have been on them for about 9 months now, I still get the jaw clenching side Effect, I used to feel sick, I also get the sweating especially when hoovering, I used to grind my teeth a lot too but this seems to have stopped.

I think I need the dose upped, my gp said to me once that you should never accept a middle groud so say you had bottom, medium high so to speak, you should never go along in life floating in the middle when on antidepressants she said slot of people just accept this and think this is ok but she said we should be on the high.

I think it's time for me to up my dose, I have good days and very bad days, some days I am moody, short tempered and just want to sleep, every day tasks can be very hard.

We have moved though so I now need to register with a new gp.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 19:57

I think it sounds like you need it upped Morning. When I was on 20mg at first I was still waking up very anxious so went up to 30mg and it sorted that.
Welcome to the sweaty hooverers. Smile

cupofteaplease · 09/01/2012 20:39

I don't get sweaty, no. But I do get restless feet at night. I find sleeping very difficult. My dd3 still needs feeding every 3 hours so I permanently feel tired and I can ping awake in the middle of the night and feel completely alert, despite the fact that I know I need to sleep when I can, as before too long, dd will need feeding again. Does that make sense? I'm tired, but I can't sleep.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2012 20:41

What time of day do you take the tablet cupoftea?

OP posts:
allnewtaketwo · 09/01/2012 20:46

I've been reading this with interest. Been on 20mg for a month now - my side effects are mainly night sweating and vivid weird dreams. I also think I need to up the dose though as I'm still having good days and bad days. Unfortunately I still have a huge appetite as always

cupofteaplease · 09/01/2012 20:48

Sparklingbrook I take them in the morning before the school run. Is there a better time?

serotoninbutterfly · 09/01/2012 20:51

It helps sleep to take it in the morning apparently, not sleeping was a huge factor in my anxiety.

I'm on a complete high from doing 2 different Jillian Michaels workouts today, I honestly cannot explain how good I feel doing all this exercise. (although it is prob more to do with me finding my happy place too) and the wonder of sweaty citalopram!
