Got some pills how long before they kick in?

St John's Wort that is. I was passing Holland and Barrett yesterday and thought it wouldn't do me any harm to try it - while I try to work out what is going on with me and how I'm going to tackle it.

Also got some Agnus Castus for PMT. So, apart from rattling a bit, I feel like I am taking a step towards helping myself.

Anyone???

MrsMiggins · 15/01/2006 21:49

I dont know anything about St johns Wort except it can affect the pill so be careful

hope it works soon....

starlover · 15/01/2006 21:50

yeah if you're on pill then be careful! not sure really... i know people who say it has worked, and some who say it does b**ger all...

starlover · 15/01/2006 21:51

sorry that sounds really pessimistic.. i DO think, that if you feel you are helping yourself then you will feel better... regardless of whether the pills work or not, iyswim?
and that in itself is a good thing

NotaStrongWomanMe · 15/01/2006 21:52

Thanks you two. Not on the pill so no worries there. Aparently it is really widely used so someone on here must take it...

The agnus castus worked the first month I tried it. I think st johns's wort can take a while to kick in - 2 or 3 weeks maybe?? Hope they help.

biglips · 15/01/2006 21:54

it can take up to 2 months for it to work... if not worked by then, then try the st johns worts drops as they supposed to be more effective

marthamoo · 15/01/2006 21:56

This may be of use

I took it for about 6 months when I felt mild depression looming again but didn't want to go back on anti-depressants. It did work but I felt it took longer than conventional anti-d's. It's not considered effective for severe depression though - just the milder forms. On the plus side I found it very easy to come off. HTH.

Picnikel - thanks. I have started mid/late month with it so am really hoping there is an improvement on last month whcih was horrid.

biglips - its the drops I've got actually. thought it might be easier than taking lots of pills together!

NotaStrongWomanMe · 15/01/2006 21:59

thanks marthamoo

You're welcome. I hope it helps you.

If you are on any sort of medication, double check with pharmacist in case any risk of conflict with the SJW (it can sometimes make medication less effective)I'ld imagine that it would take as long as SSRIs to work, so between 2 and 6 weeks.

I have been takin st john's wort since early december, because i was struggling emotionally. Felt it became effective around christmas, luckily, but it isn't a 100% cure. My stress times have halved, but i think some stress is normal when you have a family
