Questions about Citalopram Vs Seroxat

Well I've just got back from the docs after putting off dealing with painful depression and anxiety for years. Been prescribed Citalopram.
The thing is I used to be on Seroxat about 5 years ago and eventually came off it as I hated the severe withdrawal if I ever ran out and also the horrible sense of absense of emotions, like I was some kind of heartless robot.
Basically I'm wanting to know if anyone has experienced both Seroxat (peroxitine?) and Citalopram, and can tell me whether the two are the same type of thing with the same side effects. The doc said they don't prescribe Seroxat any more- why not?
I don't have the nerve to pop the pill yet so instead I've drunk a few glasses of Rose and eaten a pack of mince pies. Constructive.

They do still prescribe it- I started on Saturday! I am BF though so don't know if maybe that has something to do with it?

I'm afraid I can't answer any of your other questions though. Hopefully someone more knowledgable will pop by.

Chickenchops- thanks for replying. Not sure that it's because citalopram isn't suitable for BF as it doesn't say as such on the packaging. I hope you have a good response to the seroxat- I remember when I first started taking it I actually went a bit manic as I was so overcome with the feeling of the depression and anxiety lifting after so long. It is effective but I think that I was on it for too long.

Still not taken the citalopram. I want to get all the initial sickness side effects out of the way before I go back to work in the NY but something's stopping me.
Now spent the day drinking, eating choc and sleeping so wonder whether I ought to wait till tomorrow.

Thing is I still have christmas shopping to do and a dentist app. which I will struggle with if I feel rough.

I was on Citalopram for a while and once they got the dosage right was really good, it kept my anxiety stable and helped me sleep. Although I did stop taking it once I found out our DS was due.

Citalopram is what keeps me sane, I take it specifically for anxiety. It's an SSRI like Seroxat and they all can have that flattening effect that you describe. Case of getting the right dose - not too much too feel flat, not too little still be poorly. I'd say try what your doctor has recommended for 4-6 weeks then review.

Seroxat does seem to have a bad rep for withdrawal but I've found that with Citalopram so hey... If it helps it's worth it.

Thanks Yummy and Lady. I did take it in the end last night. Feeling wobbly and anxious today but I suspect it's just nerves rather than side effects.

this is my second time on citalopram and oh boy have i needed it, i've been suffering from postnatal depression for a bit and my partner of 8 years has walked out leaving me and our one year old daughter. I do find it helps, and at the mo i'm not worried about coming off it as i need something to help get me through the next few months. I must admit when i was on it some years back, i didn't really notice any witdrawal from it, but people react to these drugs in different ways. Good luck hun xxxx

I've been on both and I found the Citalopram to be far, far better. The Seroxat made me suicidal and detached and was pure hell to come off. The Citalopram has saved my life and I don't get any side effects
