How to cope with depression in pregnancy?

I got depressed almost immediately I got pregnant. I went to gp couple of weeks ago and she referred me somewhere. I thought it was CMHT but the appointment was at hospital. I got appointment in two weeks and I went there in hope to get antidepressants. I talked to some healt worker for a wile and she said I am not going to get medication there. She will talk to psychiatrist but it seems they will just refer me to CMHT. I will get appointment in 4-6 weeks, and I guess with a mental health worker again.

I am thinking of abortion because of not getting any support what so ever. I am just send one place to another.

WTF? There are many antidepressants safe to take in pregnancy and why the he'll are they screwing up your appointments? I would get to my GP and complain ASAP.

You poor thing.

For what it's worth I have been taking Prozac this entire pregnancy with the blessing of a large number of doctors and it has saved me from such horrible depression (I am very prone to hormonally related depression)

So! The point is that you deserve better so please please go back to your doctor and raise some hell.

Sending you some very positive vibes. Be strong - you are so much more than your mood.

Your GP seems to be meaning well in wanting to get you lots of care but it doesn't seem to be working out.

Your GP can prescribe you ADs, such as sertraline which is quite safe in pregnancy. Can you go back and ask? Bring your DP/DH or a good friend?

Tell your GP you are considering an abortion because of how bad you are feeling.

Yes I agree, GP seems to meaning well. The mental health worker was just saying my GP sent me there as she did not want to take responsibility. The whole meeting was really unpleasent. She said that she will talk with psychiatrist on monday, but because her attitude I don't think it will bring anything.

She actually called me after the appointment and ask what I think if she refers me to CMHT straight away. I said that I want to hear what the psychiatrist thinks first.

Did you ask why you do not get to see the psychiatrist yourself? That would make more sense.

bansku · 26/11/2011 17:29

apparently she will consult the psychiatrist who decides if he/she wants to see me or if I am send to CMHT. But she was already sending me there and as doctor will hear what she says, I pretty sure I will have ot wait 4-6 weeks to be seen by mental health worker.

Hi there I hope you are ok tonight. I just wanted to tell you that I suffered from terrible anxiety and depression whilst pregnant. I remember attending a routine ante natal appointment with the midwife and when she asked me how I was feeling I said right now i feel like this is the biggest mistake I've ever made. Luckily she picked up that I was seriously messed up and next thing I had an appointment to see a psychiatrist within days. I also had a cpn visit me at home for a while.

You need and deserve help. Is there a perenatal mental health or mother and baby unit in your area? If so you should immediately be referred there. You must tell them the depression is making you feel like terminating and you need help NOW.

How many weeks pregnant are you? I had to take medication to help me sleep and there are anti depressants you can take. You can also talk to us on here if it helps. Really feel for you love, its shit being depressed when pregnant but i think you can get more help.

I was referred to prenatal mental health thing but the appointment is in two weeks. It is with a special nurse, so no meds form there. The midwife who did the referral did not really ask how I was doing. I am 11 weeks pregnant now.

It was CRHT team who saw me on friday.

Do you feel you can get through the next 2 weeks? Do you have anyone to support you in rl?

littlemegs · 28/11/2011 08:50

Hi all, I am 21 weeks pregnant today and whilst I am happy the baby is on the way I constantly feel sad and find myself crying all of the time. I took a week off work a few weeks ago and felt better by the end of it- I cant say I have a stressful job. I dont think my partner can cope with me being so up and down all the time, he tends to bury his head in the sand and puts it down to normal pregnancy hormones! I have not been to the doctors yet as to be honest I dont want to be prescribed anti depressents due to seeing how they have affected a very close friend. Does anyone have any tips/experiences they can share on coping and improving there feelings? Thanks xx

Feeling better today. When I feel better my sleep gets worse. I was supposed to hear from crht today, but nothing. I guess they will send me a letter saying they referred me to CMHT. Well if i continue feel like now I do not need any antidepresssants :), althoug I need then sleeping pills.

My mood cahnged within hours yesterday. Now I feel little overagited and I could not sleep. Myabe I need moodstabilizer. I used to be several years on lithium+Lamotrigine plus an antidepressant. Lithium is a bit hard core but Lamotrigine is preventing depression quite well. I wonder if one can take that one during pregnancy.
