Coming off Citalopram - looking for advice

Hello ladies. I've been on Citalopram for 6 months for PND - first 8 weeks on 20mg and remaining 4 months on 40mg. After a rocky initial couple of months I've felt completely well since Xmas and am beginning to think about coming off it - is this too soon - should I have been well for 6 months plus before reducing? I'm discussing this with my GP this week but wondered what experiences others have had - how gradually did you come down from 40mg? TIA

Hi mummmypirate. I too am coming off Citalopram (just). Not really got any advice but wish you luck in whatever you decide. It's been a big thing for me too making the decision to come off. I've been on them 3+ years, being the second time and they have been marvelous.

Make sure you do it slowly. Hope others can help you on here.

Vickylou is right when she mentions the word slowly.

I think you are meant to cut the dosage by 5 mg each week then take it every other day until you gradually come off.

There is tons of support on here for you and i'm sure someone will be along to tell you how they did it Smile

Glad you are feeling better. I can't comment on how long you need to give it for PND, but when it is time, here is what I have found out from others on MN

Come off slowly - and if necessary when going from 10mg to nothing the following advice was given

Take one every 36 hours for a few weeks, then every 2 days, before stopping.

I went from 10mg to nothing and had a horrid month before going back on. Will try again over the summer.
