Ive just been prescibed some and I dont know whether to take them or not? Will it lead to me having to take them every time I feel a bit low?

It depends what you have been prescribed. There are NO ADs that are like Valium, or whatever, by which I mean Ads are not euphoric or habit forming. Usually you have to take them consistently for a few weeks before your mood will lift, and then continue to take them daily after that sustain the uplift in mood.
I was on and off ads for years, and every conceivable kind! Most probably you have been prescribed a Prozac-type one, or one related to prozac, rather than a tricyclic ( tricyclics are old fashioned ads).
My advice would be to take them STRICTLY as prescribed and watch your mood for the first few days you are on them. I say this becaue often ads make you feel worse initially. If you feel terribly anxious, out of it, sleepless, or out of control, I would advise going back to your doctor ASAP. If you are not breastfeeding, a mild sedative can counteract the unpleasant effects that sometimes accompany anti-d therapy at first. After a couple of weeks you will find that your chemistry has adjusted, and then you can drop the sedative and just stay on the anti-d. DON'T make the mistake I made and become reliant on sedatives to deal with things. They ARE really addictive and I had a hell of a time weaning myself off them.
Good luck. Anti-ds DO work for most people if used as prescribed. It will probably be worth it!

I was on one called fluoxotine and they were great for me. The doctor called them a mood regulater rather than an AD.

The doctor didnt actually tell me it was an ad but im sure it is as he said he thought I was depressed. Going back next week for blood tests, hormone inbalance, thyroids that sort of thing.

I took them, went up to 30mg after a few months. Was on them for a year and they really helped me.

Oh but consult your doctor before you come off them. I just stopped and was really ill for a week.

shalliorshanti · 28/10/2005 16:55

I was on Citalopram (40mg) then reduced to 20 mg for over 2 years. they were fantastic. helped me through a very black time. I stopped them immediately (not advised but had no side effects) all through the love and support of my dp. While I was on them, I felt more able to cope etc and did'nt feel "weird or spaced out".
If you think they'll help, go ahead. You certainly won't suffer ill effects being on them.
Good luck hun x
