Mirtazapine

Hi, I've been taking Citalopram since November last year. I had sleeping issues with Citalopram and was also prescribed a sleeping tablet. I didn't have problems falling asleep but I'd often wake in the early hours and have difficulty getting back to sleep.

Anyway I had a review yesterday, my citalopram had run out by this point. He didn't want to re-prescribe sleeping pills (fair enough) so prescribed the Mirtazapine (15mg which he said was about the same dose as 20mg of Citalopram) but these are to be taken an hour before bed and will help me sleep.

I took my first one last night and within half an hour I felt drunk, I was slurring my words and literally HAD to go to bed or I felt like I would pass out with utter exhaustion. I slept well; great, all good so far but I had to force myself out of bed, I felt so tired that I was dizzy and not at all with it. 3 hours on from getting up and I'm still feeling spaced out. If I went to bed now I feel like I wouldn't wake up again for the rest of the day.

I'm going through this post as I type because my typing errors are so bad I'm missing half the letters off words. Is this something that wears off as your body adjusts to them or has anybody experienced this and it was just a bog standard side effect? I can't go on like this, I feel dangerous like I'll do something stupid like walk in front of a car because I'm just not with it at all. Another thing, as I was falling asleep last night I kept having involuntary body tremors.

I can't just stop taking them until I get an appointment with the docs because if I go a day or so without taking my medication I get the brain zaps.

Im taking mirtazapine Bottleofbeer, i started off on 15mg but needed to get my dose put up to 30mg after a year as they were not having the same effect,
mirtazapine works straight away ( not like a lot of other ADs which can take a few weeks ) so that is probably why you were feeling like this, i do remember feeling slightly woozy when i first started taking them but not to the extent that you are experiencing, could you maybe try only taking half a pill to see how you get on untill your system gets used to them and settles down.
I have tried other ADs but these are the only ones which work for me.

Hi there, I felt very sleepy on them for the first two weeks and after that it settled down. For me though I loved the sleepiness as I suffered with terrible insomnia. It does wear off, you need to stick at it if you can.
