Wondering if anyone can advise regarding breastfeeding & Anti depressants?

DS is 9 weeks & I have beentaking Lofepramine for 6 wks. started off on 1 tablet per day have now increased to 3/day & apart frm crying less I don't feel an awful lot better.

As I am bfeeding GP said AD options are limited? Does anyone have any experience of other ADs that worked for them? I was on Citalopram 3 years ago also for PND & that really worked for me but I had already stopped feeding DD.

Am feeling quite bad so am seriously considering stopping feeding DS Sad. Apols for typos am typing 1 handed as trying to fd DS

Thanks

I know sertraline has been used by friends with depression for breastfeeding, and worked well for them. It is an SSRI, a more modern antidepressant than lofepramine.

Just to second Keziah, I've been taking sertraline since second trimester and have been feeding DD since birth (she's now 14 months).

Sertraline works well for me. I don't think any medic can ever say that an antidepressant is 100% risk free for breastfeeding - any useful research would be unethical (and hardly lucrative for pharmaceuticals).

For me, it's always the balance between any potential and unproven harmful effects on DD by taking sertraline, and the more proven risks to me (and her) if I stop taking meds.

Good luck and let us know how you get on!
