I don't know where to turn, am really worried about my dp. He's been showing signs of depression recently and I would say is drinking too heavily. After a recent heavy session (abnormally so) he is really freaking me out, its now 48 hours since this binge, he is unable to function, confused, behaving very erratically, can't follow simple instructions. Has anyone experienced similar? I don't know if this is as a result of the alcohol or something else? I will try to get him to see the doctor but would value input from someone who might have been thru similar...

It's hard to say. I do know that someone who has been drinking very heavily for a period of weeks will take a good few days to dry out properly. During that time they may well have memory problems, confusion, panic attacks, hand tremors and all sorts of other alcohol withdrawal symptoms.

But my first thought would be that although you think the binge has finished, maybe he's continuing to drink without you seeing him do so. Heavy alcohol consumption over a period of days/weeks can have a cumulative effect with the drinker ending up so drunk they they pretty much lose touch with reality entirely.

I will admit that my experiences with people with severe drink problems has coloured my outlook somewhat so maybe there's something else going on here. I do think it would be a good idea to get him to a doctor.

Drinking is unfortunately very common in depressed men, they use it to self-medicate. Whether it is alcohol or depression, you should try and encourage him to see his GP.

Your dp needs to see a GP. He could have had a minor stroke or some other reaction to this binge - he should be over the effects 48 hours later, so I would get a GP appt asap

It is essential that your husband seeks medical advice.

There is a serious problem with caused by alcohol abuse called Korsakoff's Syndrome, which causes memory loss and confusion. It is treatable with intravenous Vitamin B, but unless treated urgently it can have permanent effects.

It is extremely unlikely that this is the problem your husband has, if the drinking has been relatively short term but even so, with the symptoms he has he needs to see a doctor.

A & E if your GP is shut now.
