Am struggling to cope at the moment. He is really angry and paranoid and has just had a blazing row with my 85 year old dad. He is always really bad during holidays as he needs routine so much. Am completely fed up at the mo - he is being a complete tosser. Aaargh..

no but have bipolar dad, he normally gets down and angry during winter time full stop

Winter sucks... must have been rough for you growing up with that. I try my best to protect my kids from the worst of it (worst of him) but they have a tough time sometimes.

ye, it was very tough, he was very abusive never to me or my brother but to my mum, she left him when i was 12 tho, he has improved with age tho, not sure whether thats a maturity thing but when he sees red that is it, i have had many an arguement over the years but i think he respects more for being honest speaking my mind and not backing down to him, he did take medication for it a couple of years ago but sed he didnt like it and it made him feel rubbish neither happy or sad and that he wud prefer to be the extreme of each then stuck in the middle. it must be hard for u as i know as a mother u just want to protect and have the best for your kids and if hes anythin like my dad there will be days when he can be the happiest most fun dad in the world

Yep he can be great and is always full of remorse and embarrassed when he comes down from his manic highs. He flounced off about 2 hours ago has just rung from his mums about an hour away - we are meant to be leaving as a family for a fancy dress party in about an hour.

I have a MIL with bipolar (1 plus co morbid conditions)

I'll happily lend an ear and a platitude free shoulder if you need to get stuff off your chest.

I loath the mania, I can't bear the depression, because it is horrible to watch somebody retreat that far into themselves, but it is the mania that really has me run ragged and close the edge.
