How do you find a therapist? Can I be referred?

Silly question I know, but can your GP refer you to see someone suitable? I'm not sure I can afford to pay hourly rates, pathetic as that sounds.

Yes there are all sorts of people GP can refer to, counsellor, cognitive behavioural therapist, alcohol support worker, anxiety management groups, the list goes on but it's a matter of seeing GP to discuss your individual needs. The downside IME is that some of these services can build up a significant waiting list so it's worth talking through your options in relation to how long the waiting lists are in your area and how urgently you need to get help. There is normally some sort of 'crisis team' who can help out in the short term in the case of really urgent situations.

Also samaritans can provide support and info.
