it takes a while to start working, probably 2-4 weeks

If you want to try something less chemical, Filisa is worth a go. It's a herbal antidepressant, and I take it when I feel anxious or down. It has a subtle effect and doesn't make you hyper or anything. Just props you up and gives you a bit more control. Little Herbal International do it, and it's recommended by Marisa Peer - she started the Supersize programme on TV. I love Little Herbal stuff! They are always really helpful there.

hi
it is a beta blocker i think and slows your heart rate down, the doc said just just take it as i need it ie when feel particularly anxious or if have feelings of panic. so i think it is supposed to work immediately rather than take 2-4 weeks to kick in? but not sure if it is working. i dont feel much different

It does have an immediate affect. What dose has the doctor given you?

single1ds · 29/09/2010 12:19

Hi sailorsgas
10mg tablets, take 2 at a time. have you taken these

Yes but mine are 40mg. I take them for a tremor which is worse if I get anxious. They are helpful but I would also try other treatments for your anxiety such as hypnotherapy, yoga, meditation or CBT which your doctor could refer you for.

I am reading Patrick Holfords nutrition for the mind and have started taking magnesium and B vitamins. I'm convinced that my anxiety is a mixture of physiological and psychological so trying to tackle from both angles.

thanks sailorsgal
same here, i think it is my thoughts causing the anxiety. when you take them how long is the effect supposed to last?

I don't think the effect lasts very long. I try only to take them if I really need them. I hate taking tablets and I did without them for a few years but am suffering bad pms aswell and my anxiety went through the roof since I had my son.

CBT would be helpful for you if you think its negative thoughts that is the root cause.

hi single, its beta blocker effects do work virtually straight away and have the effect of slowing you down.(cardiac output is lowered i believe) I meant the knock on psychological effect of slowing you down which can take longer depending on how receptive you are to them. A colleague of mine took them for anxiety and they made him so tired that he had to come off them ,but they didnt really help his anxiety attacks. Sometimes its trying to come to terms with your thought processes that helps more than the tablets.
The tablets create a sort of equilibrium so that you can cope better with your anxiety and panic attacks.

Do you know what is causing them or what triggered them.
