Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Thanks for the new thread - checking in!

harriethoyle · 10/03/2026 21:39

I got put on a cooldown by MN for too many posts trying to finish the last thread off 🤣 I was on the naughty step!

OP posts:
HLBug · 10/03/2026 22:31

I must be on the naughty list too - my post from last night is still hidden for investigation!!

harriethoyle · 11/03/2026 08:51

Intriguing - makes it seem controversial when I suspect it was just a check in! 🤣

signing in for FD2 after an early morning gym session. Feeling strong 💪🏻

Kitchen closing on 730 - no normal bread at lunch time and DH had the car so I had to have a bagel! But I’ll take that in the context of this morning’s gym session. Back next Monday, will try not to overdo it this weekend.

HLBug · 11/03/2026 20:26

Well done @harriethoyle

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2026 04:17

Hi all

Thanks for the new thread @harriethoyle

Still got the same work fun and games going on here which I'm working on the end game for here

harriethoyle · 12/03/2026 08:21

Morning @OohMrDarcy - hope you’re ok and not under the cosh! Sometimes the only way out is through…

DH in for his op today so am reading my book at the hospital having been ordered off the ward by a bossy nurse 🙄 cafeteria looks distinctly uninspiring so I shall attempt to resist the lure of the tuck shop. Wishing I’d bought my birthday Toblerone with me to work away at 🤣

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2026 08:35

Completely under the cost @harriethoyle and have been for a year or so, however planning exit strategy so hopefully not for too much longer!

Hope your DH op goes ok today

OohMrDarcy · 12/03/2026 08:37

or cosh .... don't you love autocorrect!

TeaRose29 · 12/03/2026 09:39

Thank you for using my title suggestion, @harriethoyle - now I’ve got no excuse! Well done for going to the gym, and I hope your DH’s op goes well today. @HLBug , I can get into the jeans but they are still a bit tight around the waist, so I wouldn’t want to eat in them! I have a small bum and hips, so at the moment with trousers, if the waist is comfortable, the rest is gaping. I’ve put a photo of the jeans as the wallpaper on my phone, as a reminder, and I’m just hoping that my daughter has forgotten all about it! 😊

I was rather derailed by DH’s birthday meal but I’m back in the right frame of mind now. We are going out for a meal with DD and boyfriend on Saturday, so I’m planning minis today and tomorrow.

harriethoyle · 12/03/2026 19:07

DH through his op and back on the ward and surgeon pleased with how everything went. Phew…

OP posts:
HLBug · 12/03/2026 22:18

Glad to hear it all went well @harriethoyle

OohMrDarcy · 13/03/2026 05:18

Fab news @harriethoyle

HLBug · 13/03/2026 08:18

Friday weigh in and after a big loss last week, it’s a minuscule one this week 😂 but we continue!!!

SW 11st 12.8lb
CW 11st 9.02lb
GW 10st 7lb

Down less than a pound this week. But….still a down (!)
trusting the process and also recognising that I’ve started walking and exercising more this week after a few weeks off due to a dodgy back, so there’s probably a bit of water retention in there - the DOMS I had Tuesday/Weds this week was wild!

harriethoyle · 13/03/2026 18:26

Thanks all - I am so tired 🤣 got the Friday wine open and it’s much needed. Gym tomorrow morning to work it off!

@HLBug every downwards movement counts!!

OohMrDarcy · 14/03/2026 08:24

Morning all

Still not faced a weigh in, but I know I've gained a good amount back. Will get it done soon.
.
I am so close to being able to hand in my notice at work and it can't come soon enough! Celebrated with a takeaway last night, but went nandos Cesar salad (and chips) which has to be considerably better than a dominos at least!

Congratulations on the loss @HLBug

TeaRose29 · 15/03/2026 10:43

Glad to hear the op went well, @harriethoyle , and well done on your loss @HLBug .

Phew. Got away with it. DD and her BF have just left, having been here since Friday evening. They are training for a marathon so were out running most of yesterday. On her way out she said “Oh Mum, what about those jeans?” and I just said “Oh, they fit now!”. “Damn!” she said, and that was that! No proof required (which there surely would have been if she had remembered earlier 🤣🤣).

Well I can get them on and do up the zip, but to say that they “fit” is pushing it. I reckon about 4 pounds off will do the trick. That’s the end of socialising for a while, so I will now be laser-focused 💪💪 👖👖

HLBug · 15/03/2026 19:46

Well done @TeaRose29- the jeans are safe!! Hope you’ve all had a good weekend together.

@OohMrDarcyyour work situation sounds stressful - are you moving to another role?

I’ve gone over TDEE today but it’s Mother’s Day so who cares Grin
The last few weeks have been very restrained so a few 100s over today won’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

Back for a FD tomorrow.

OohMrDarcy · 15/03/2026 22:06

Hopefully so @HLBug , stuff is in motion so fingers crossed will have news very soon!

harriethoyle · 16/03/2026 09:05

Fabulous @TeaRose29 and glad work peril has an end in sight @OohMrDarcy

I’m taking a couple of days off fasting while things are a bit manic - probably back Wednesday when we have a really busy day, off to the gym this morning for a class and same Wednesday morning. Will check in!

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 16/03/2026 18:32

thanks for the new thread and the pun! I hope your hubby is on the mend and life can get back to normal soon @harriethoyle.

I think I have done it. I have cracked the FD drought. I have just had dinner! And on target, too. 🎉

so, I shall try again on Thursday and see how I do. I’ve also had a bit of a nudge from the doctor about my cholesterol so I’m going to have to reasses things a bit more genrerally as my winter comforting eating hit new highs this year. I should be rather bashful as my Sat fats intake!!

HLBug · 16/03/2026 18:33

Kitchen closing on 588. Held out for most of the day and just had a lovely baked potato for tea.

Day 2 of my B2B tomorrow!

HLBug · 16/03/2026 18:36

Cross post with @SmellyMe - sounds like we’ve both had a good day! I know what you mean about winter comfort eating - I feel like I’m finally coming out of hibernation now. Just need a big more daylight and for the temps to rise a couple more degrees - I’m in the far north of Scotland and it’s still a bit cold and dark here….but definitely improving and I think I felt some warmth in the sun this weekend!
