Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Awww,,I was doing so well then had a glass of wine- possibly to reward myself for doing so well- terrible self sabotage.
Still on 900, so could be worse- such empty, unnutrious calories though.
Oh well, wont be defeated.
Well done to everyone else!

That's still really good! I'm seeing these little slip ups as learning experiences - I did similar but with half an Easter egg instead of the wine haha ended the day on 846.

Buntyforgirls · 14/04/2026 11:13

Trying again today, NO wine!

harriethoyle · 14/04/2026 12:26

The only thing to remember about alcohol @mumofbun is that it lowers your metabolism so makes it more difficult to lose weight - the body treats the alcohol as a toxin and gets rid of it first, before returning to fat burning. So sadly, delicious wine, is worse than chocolate! Something which vexes me hugely 😂

Oh that's so interesting! I remember reading someone on a calorie counting post saying it didn't matter what they did, they never lost weight if they drank alcohol that week...it's definitely one of my biggest calorie outlays most weeks so I'm trying to do some alcohol free weekends!

.

HLBug · 14/04/2026 19:44

I’ve been mostly with you today @harriethoyle but unfortunately I’m closing at 854 cals. Not the end of the world - I was thinking about doing an extra mini this week anyway, so will turn that into a reality. It was a lovely large latte from cafe nero that scuppered me.

harriethoyle · 14/04/2026 19:54

I’m a fan of a mocha @HLBug although I usually take my coffee black. It’s so comforting!

kitchen closing on 690, 1320 for the b2b. I’m back on Thursday for a mini but right now all I can think about is tomorrows breakfast 🤣

Great results everyone, so I managed to redeem myself, and will try another fast 800 too.
Sleep well!

harriethoyle · 14/04/2026 21:27

Well done @Buntyforgirls !

Crumpets for breakfast - deeeeelicious!!

OP posts:
Buntyforgirls · 16/04/2026 07:31

Yum @harriethoyle, that's the great thing about this way of eating- occassional treats that you really appreciate.
On 800 again today.

harriethoyle · 16/04/2026 09:11

I'm joining you @Buntyforgirls on a loose FD - slept terribly last night and I always find it harder to properly fast when exhausted but I have managed to avoid breakfast this morning, and have a busy day, so I have my usual FD lunch and a planned FD tea. We will see!

I’m now down to 10.1 1/4. Super pleased with that - want to get down to about 9.10 if I can. @harriethoyle is right about alcohol - I’ve cut it out completely for the last two weeks, and I’m sure this is what has made the difference. My stomach also feels much flatter. I’m going to carry on for at least 2 more weeks as an experiment to see what happens. Protein mini today and feeling very motivated! 💪 those fasting today!

harriethoyle · 16/04/2026 10:04

That's fabulous @TeaRose29 - well done!! I shall add alcohol free lager to the shopping list inspired by your results 👏

Buntyforgirls · 16/04/2026 12:47

Fabulous @TeaRose29! I'd love flatter tummy- what do you think has helped the most?
@harriethoyle- what is your usual fast day lunch, if you don't mind my asking?
Having my first meal of the day- it really helps being too busy to notice!
Veg curry in slow cooker for later, which I will have without rice.
Enjoy the day all!

harriethoyle · 16/04/2026 13:49

@Buntyforgirls a tuna salad sandwich made with half a tin of tuna, a tablespoon of light mayo and a spring onion, on wholemeal bread. Comes in at 281 cals and leaves me 300-400 for the evening depending on whether I am back to backing or not!

Still going great, for me. I was a couple of pounds over last month, so I was very strict with my diet this month. This combined with my fasting led to me losing 7 pounds! I only thought I was going to knock off a couple.

I'm currently dead on 10stone. Which, is as light as I've been since I was 17/18. I'm happy with were I am but don't want to get any lighter.

harriethoyle · 16/04/2026 15:15

Brilliant @dannyufcfan that's a great result!

Brilliant @dannyufcfan that's a great result!

Thank you! I can't believe how well IF works for me, tbh.

HLBug · 17/04/2026 09:16

Friday weigh in - fully expected to have gained due to 2 weeks off plan over Easter hols, but I’ve double (triple) checked and it’s definitely a loss.

SW 11st 12.8lb
CW 11st 6lb
GW 10st 7lb

harriethoyle · 17/04/2026 09:27

I've lost 1.7kg this week BUT that was after 6 weeks at the in laws so I am still 3kg above my fighting weight 😂Will take it easy this weekend and try for another 3FD next week to really make progress back to my happy weight.

TeaRose29 · 17/04/2026 10:13

Another 3/4 off this morning - I’m down to 10.0.1/2! Can’t wait to get into the 9s! (And into those jeans! 🤣🤣).

Well done @harriethoyle , @HLBug , @dannyufcfan and @Buntyforgirls .

@harriethoyle my favourite AF drink is Martini 0% with slimline tonic and a slice of orange. Absolutely delicious and only about 30 calories.

@Buntyforgirls as I understand it, cutting out alcohol allows your body to get rid of visceral fat, which will help you to get a flatter stomach. I also eat a high protein diet - protein can’t really be stored, plus about 25% of its calories get used up in digestion. I’ve also been very strict on NFDs. I’m on a mission! 😊

harriethoyle · 17/04/2026 11:11

I'll look out for that @TeaRose29 thanks - I also really rate the Tanquery 0% gin, it's very ginny, you could almost believe you were drinking actual booze!
