Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well
b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500
BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.
FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise
MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories
miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk
NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE
NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size
SV = Scale Victory
TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.
WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Hi, I had to change my username cause I somehow logged myself out. I’m on day 3 of fasting. Think one mistake I’ve been making though is stopping my fast at midday, which I’ve done the last few days for practical reasons, cause I just feel as if I want to eat again really quickly. I’m staying off sweet stuff and aiming for more protein. Do feel lighter and a bit better physically. Hoping when I weigh I. On Friday that I’m a couple of pounds down. My Berbatine supplements also arrived last night, so I had one with my dinner

harriethoyle · 23/03/2026 18:33

Posting here for accountability- I am going to do a b2b tomorrow and Wednesday. Woke feeling exhausted so have postponed until tomorrow rather than setting myself up
to fail.

Sounds sensible @harriethoyle - but careful you aren’t coming down with something.

Kitchen closing on 562 for me today. Back for day 2 tomorrow.

how are you getting on @DominoQueen51?
Hope you are enjoying your holiday @Buntyforgirls - I tried ADF once but couldn’t sustain it around social events, general lifestyle etc etc. OMAD was a bit easier, but again not sustainable

harriethoyle · 23/03/2026 22:17

Oh btw @HLBug @TeaRose29 the vag 0% yoghurt is excellent. Definitely a swap I’m going to make generally. However lidl high protein granola is not nice so please learn from me and avoid - a weird texture and no raisins 🤢

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 23/03/2026 22:20

@Buntyforgirls I’ve never done ADF but I’m intrigued by it… I’m going to read more about it but quite often after a holiday I’ll do 3 FDs a week until I’ve got rid of my excess weight. I wonder how it would work with exercise though…

Morning All!
Having a fabulously relaxing hols, with at least 5 miles walked each day around the glorious lakes.
However, holiday or not, I need to stop eating as much, using "but it's my holiday..." as an excuse.
So, today, I aim to restrict my calories, no treats, alcohol, tell myself it will still be there tomorrow.
My body is telling me it needs a break...I just need to listen to it!
Good luck everyone today, and yes, @harriethoyle 3FDs next week is a good idea- let's me off the hook a bit this week.🙂

DominoQueen51 · 24/03/2026 08:31

@Buntyforgirlsthat sounds amazing. Interesting what you say about your body needing a break, I find that I can get in holiday mode very quickly with food. @HLBugI’m doing ok, although my plate of pasta last night was too big. Need to fast for longer today cause ai had a late dinner last night. Might try and do something hi protein in the slow cooker. Planning to hold off weighing until Friday, really hoping that I’ve lost a couple of pounds. Interested in some of the fasting abbreviations. Does anyone FD literally mean fasting for 24 hours. Also does AFD mean doing that every other day. Sorry to ask the probably obvious

HLBug · 24/03/2026 19:54

Sounds like a lovely holiday @Buntyforgirls - personally I don’t think any rules apply to holidays!

Day 2 of B2B for me closing closing on 682.

@DominoQueen51FD stands for Fast Day, where you eat roughly 500 cals (more if a man / breastfeeding etc). I tend to do 2 FDs consecutively ( B2B = back to back) which gives a bit more wriggle room of 650 cals each day informally. If you have a look at the pinned post at the start of the thread then all the terms etc are explained, but equally there’s no such thing as a daft question so feel free to ask away Smile

harriethoyle · 24/03/2026 20:43

Great b2b @HLBug - kitchen closing here in 731 and back for day 2 tomorrow. Back at work from Thursday so definitely out of holiday mode @Buntyforgirls 🤣 but I know EXACTLY what you mean!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 25/03/2026 18:38

Kitchen closing on 635 for day 2 - delighted with that and my iron willpower in the face of the PLATTER of different toasted and buttered breads my MIL produced to go with my soup 🤣🤣 I had half a slice and had to physically walk away from the table to triumph!

Already looking forward to breakfast tomorrow. Thinking maybe yoghurt and muesli or maybe weetabix…

Weighed in this morning, 2.25 pounds down which I’m really pleased with. I haven’t been an angel, but I’ve been loosely fasting, making better food choices and moving more.

I’ve also decided to revise my target, cause I think the one I set last week was a bit unrealistic. I was in panic mode after trying on some clothes in M&S that looked horrific

SW 9st6.25
CW 9st4
GW 8st12

i might revise my goal weight when I get there, but I want to be able to maintain without too much difficulty

HLBug · 27/03/2026 08:04

Fantastic @DominoQueen51 glad you had a good week.

Things are still slow for me, but the scales are moving in the right direction so I’m ok with it.

SW 11st 12.8lb
CW 11st 7.08lb
GW 10st 7lb

I ate late last night then pretty much went straight to bed - which I normally would never do, but DH had made dinner and kept me some warm while I was out at the gym then proceeded to sit next to me while I ate it….so it felt rude not to! And it was delicious…

Kids here break up for Easter today so the next fortnight is going to be chaotic - I’m accepting now that FDs will be pretty much impossible, but I’ll keep to TDEE as much as I can and aim to be under as many days as I can. FDs will be there for me when the holidays are over and this WOL is a marathon, not a sprint.

TeaRose29 · 27/03/2026 09:51

Well done @DominoQueen51 and @HLBug , and @harriethoyle your MIL sounds hilarious! Well done for not caving! @DominoQueen51 Are you very small? YourGW seems very low.

I had a good NFD yesterday and weighed in 2 pounds lighter this morning, which I’m very pleased and slightly surprised about. Am now 10.3, and my GW is 9.13, at which point I think I will be able to get into those jeans 😊 …

DominoQueen51 · 27/03/2026 12:46

@TeaRose29I’m 5ft4/5 ish, but for some reason, smallish bones and lack of muscle or general body shape, I really don’t carry weight well. I’m a size 12 round my hips and sometimes round my waist as well. Typical pear shape, I’m small busted (30/32D), so fit into smaller sizes in tops. It’s a fine line between being a bit trimmer and more toned and losing too much, meaning that I’ll look older cause I tend to lose weight in my face. I think my revised goal weight will take me to BMI 20/21. I am doing a 10 minute work out every other day and on the non cardio days doing a bit of toning/nordic style exercise. I also walk a lot cause I don’t drive. Also trying to eat more protein.

Well done to everyone else this week

harriethoyle · 27/03/2026 12:54

She’s a doll @TeaRose29 but my goodness, she’s that generation who shows their love by feeding you 🤣🤣

Im not even thinking about getting on the scales until I’m home and back in routine!

A great week for lots of us, well done everyone 🙂 I’m back on Monday for a FD, and Wednesday I think. Will check in!

Afternoon all

Notice is officially handed in at work! Unfortunately I have a 3 month notice period so will be a while until I get away, but that gives me 3 months to attempt to get in a better place and shift some of the weight for a confidence boost before the new job starts.

Not sure if that will be fasting or not at the moment as I know my stress hormones must be super high so still deciding if its a good idea to potentially increase them further! I'll be coming up with a plan over the weekend though

harriethoyle · 27/03/2026 18:06

That’s great news @OohMrDarcy - have a glass or two wine this weekend, try and relax then put a plan in place. Personally I find fasting very comforting when I’m stressed because it’s something I can be in control of and it’s one less thing to worry about!

OP posts:
HLBug · 27/03/2026 20:18

oh well done @OohMrDarcy - I can imagine that amazing!! Is there any chance they will let you go early or put you on gardening leave? Even if they don’t I hope even just knowing you will soon be away will help bring the stress levels down.

I’ve ended the week with an unexpected Mini - kitchen closing on 1018. I went to the gym at lunchtime and powered on through until tea time without any effort at all. Hopefully will help set me up for the next two weeks of school hols!

DominoQueen51 · 27/03/2026 20:40

@OohMrDarcy that must be a relief. Hope everyone has a nice weekend

OohMrDarcy · 28/03/2026 10:09

Thanks both

Approximately zero chance of early exit or gardening leave, frustrating as it's standard practice for my role but the team is so small they can't take it... Still working on it though

Congratulations on the mini @HLBug

Have a good weekend all... I had my first full night sleep in more than a year last night (which says it all!) so even if it's a one off I'm happy!

OohMrDarcy · 28/03/2026 10:12

@harriethoyle completely agree re the ease, though I'm a life long comfort/ stress eater
But most importantly for me I'm peri meno and have been reading lots about cortisol being bad for women in this phase and fasting can increase it. I'll probably get back into it once my life stress reduces a bit but need more balance first I think

Still pondering

Buntyforgirls · 28/03/2026 10:39

I'm back from hols ,and so ready to jump back into this!
Unfortunately I have a baby shower to attend- cake, and a friends meet up tonight- alcohol. So, it's a damage limitation day.
Started with TRE, and low cal porridge from fast 800. Defrosting something unidentifiable from freezer - lots of broccoli, not sure what else, for dinner to try not to grab food at the pub tonight.
Should try and exercise too...
Well done for the successes last week , and to @OohMrDarcy for positive action, AND a good night's sleep.

mumofbun · 29/03/2026 21:13

Hi all, planning to join this week! Trying to decide which days are best for FD - I see here that some people prefer busier days! I don't know why I hadn't thought of that as it would be easier to avoid eating so much...so far I'm thinking Wednesday and Friday. Tuesday is my busiest work day but then I have to pick kids up and get home late so worried I'll be too grumpy!

Will do weigh in tomorrow to get started 😅

harriethoyle · 30/03/2026 10:26

Morning all, signing in for my first FD of the week - going to do Wednesday as my other day because we've a load of appointments to get to and from and I also have a full work day. So should be too busy to miss food.. as if!!

Tune wrap and a fishcake and veg for tea tonight.

Good morning!,
About to break my fast, and feeling very hungry! Also been to the gym, so it's a good start for me today after my holiday treats.
Good luck everyone today, and hello to @mumofbun 👋
