Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Can I join you? On 2nd fast day of week two today and feeling really tired now. Sadly can’t get to bed quite yet but looking forward to breakfast!

SmellyMe · 30/05/2025 06:13

Welcome @BunnyNumNum and woo hoo @Formel and @midnights92; you made it @CheshireSplat after a pep 😂!

it’s funny how you go to bed on a FD thinking about all the things you can munch the next day. But, when you wake up, you’re fine and not desperate
to consume.

harriethoyle · 30/05/2025 11:08

Well done @CheshireSplat - that's fantastic!! Just shows 90% of this is in the mind.

Did gym this morning and a nice low scale number, just ready to get it back up again this weekend 😂Will try and remain slightly virtuous and get out for some long walks.

I take it all back! I consumed two thirds of my NFD allowance by 11am this morning. Oops. I’m close to the end of my cycle so I’ll blame that. I’m off for a brief run to atone and get some of the calories back 😂

CheshireSplat · 30/05/2025 13:32

Sounds like everyone did well yesterday. I closed the kitchen on 497. I had a Tesco finest jalapeno burger for tea just on its own . It was yellow stickered, 2 for £1.19 so the other is in the freezer for another FD. It was delicious! And filled me up. I just wasn't hungry this morning. Weird.

midnights92 · 31/05/2025 10:06

Waking up after a NFD with 2 more NFDs ahead of my with my inlaws for a family birthday and a lot of eating - funny how so soon after struggling through one you can start to look forward to them again

harriethoyle · 01/06/2025 09:57

I AM UNDER 67 KG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ELEVEN YEARS!! 💥💥Only by 0.1kg and it won't last until tomorrow but it still counts 😂

eekwhatnow · 01/06/2025 20:49

Well done @harriethoyle that's amazing, and totally deserved!
I’ve had the week off for half term and looking forward to checking in for a FD tomorrow. This will help inspire me.

CheshireSplat · 01/06/2025 23:13

Well done @harriethoyle !

I working away for the next few days so part of tomorrow's FD will take place in the pleasurable setting of a Premier Inn. Lots of supermarkets close by. I'm thinking of buying a ready cooked salmon fillet or some sliced beef.

eekwhatnow · 02/06/2025 07:00

As promised, checking in for FD 1. Hoping a really good week will undo any damage from my holiday last week, rather than necessarily go downwards. I have also decided to commit to no alcohol until the end of term. It does not help me!
So coffee this morning, miso soup and salad through the day, omelette this evening. Good luck to anyone else fasting.

harriethoyle · 02/06/2025 07:42

New low did not survive the Sunday carvery 😝.

Going for a mini today and the same on Wednesday I think. Double gym day tomorrow so won’t be doing anything of note then! And I’ve got work drinks on Thursday…

OP posts:
Formel · 02/06/2025 09:23

Well done @harriethoyle!

I'm meant to be doing Tues & Thurs for FDs but also Thursday is the only day my PT could fit me in and I don't think I can do a gym session on a FD. Might have to try to do Friday as a FD, but DD will be grumpy if we don't have our usual takeaway (she's autistic and not very flexible about routines!)

midnights92 · 02/06/2025 11:04

+0.2kg after 3 NFDs Halo Back on it today and doing well so far, black coffee and an apple for later then have a preplanned meal for 595 cals.

eekwhatnow · 02/06/2025 19:19

Kitchen closed on 554 and I have to admit I’m now in bed to avoid any further snackage!

CheshireSplat · 02/06/2025 19:51

Ooh @eekwhatnow , nearly snap, I've closed at 557

harriethoyle · 03/06/2025 09:05

Well done @eekwhatnow @CheshireSplat - excellent starts to the week! I’m one gym session down and then got pt after work. Not at all sure if this is doable regularly but we’ll see… got food planned for the day but with some wriggle room if I’m ravenous later on

SmellyMe · 03/06/2025 21:23

@harriethoyle well done! What an amazing feeling that must be.

I didn’t register a loss after my 2nd FD last week but I had a birthday and a night out so keeping level was doing well I thought.

I like with this WOE you think more in days than the doom of diet food. ‘I’ll get back to it on Monday’ doesn’t have the same sense of dread. “Oh, I’m having a bit cake… so I’m on a FD tomorrow and I might fit in a wee run.” It’s great! Had a loss after my FD1 yesterday so back on track and feeling good 👌

good luck to everyone this week!

Formel · 03/06/2025 22:00

Finished today on 446, pleased with that after a dispiriting start to the week with a 0.8kg gain - feels very unfair after a virtuous week last week!

eekwhatnow · 04/06/2025 07:13

Checking in for FD2. Not a fantastic NFD yesterday because I baked cookies for the kids and then ate several of them!

harriethoyle · 04/06/2025 11:55

I cannot bake at home @eekwhatnow unless I resign myself to eating the fruits of my efforts 😂

OP posts:
eekwhatnow · 04/06/2025 20:48

Kitchen closed at 555. Anyone else get very cold on fast days? I’m cuddled up to my hot water bottle!

SmellyMe · 04/06/2025 22:55

MN have got rid of the laughing emoji! Why?!

FD2 tomorrow to complete 9 weeks of 5:2.

Well done! How do you feel after 9 weeks? Are you seeing any differences?

SmellyMe · 04/06/2025 23:07

@midnights92 feeling great thanks. I’ve lost 5kg so nearly 1 stone. I’m fitting into clothes that have been languishing in my wardrobe for years. It’s amazing. I felt things were slow to start and I didn’t get an initial woosh, but I’ve stuck with it and it’s working. I love that it’s just two days a week. I am tracking calories on my NFDs but it’s not the same as a diet as I can eat pizza and ice cream etc,

eekwhatnow · 05/06/2025 07:24

That’s fantastic @SmellyMe, must be a great feeling going into summer knowing you’re down a stone!
I was 0.2kg up today but I was expecting a little increase after half term holiday and glad it was only that. Hoping to be down again next week.
