Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Well done @SmellyMe and @midnights92 and everyone else on the SV’’s and NSV’s.

I've been hiding while on my two-week birthday break from the 5:2, but braved the scales this morning to assess the damage. Astonishingly, only 1lb up. I think it’s because I’ve continued to avoid bread and sweet things (most days), and have kept moving. Probably won’t hold myself to fasting this week either as I have a tricky schedule including a work trip and 2 night shifts which can be very depleting but I am feeling very encouraged.

Keen to hear any tips for night shifts. DH does 1 in 5 (NHS) and wants to join in but the nights make it all much more complicated

TeaRose29 · 26/05/2025 09:54

Yes, well done everyone. After my spontaneous mini yesterday, another 1/4 pound off! As @midnights92 said about the croissants - welcome Midnight! - the great thing about this WOE is that you can enjoy your NFDs without guilt. I could never do a slimming club diet again. Felt like being in a permanent stranglehold!

Darker · 26/05/2025 09:55

My night shifts are very lightweight - it’s voluntary stuff. Not all night.

harriethoyle · 26/05/2025 11:36

Well done @Darker ! Good reward for your bravery! And welcome @midnights92

Yesterday did a mini, a gym session and stayed off the booze. A revelation to have a totally dry weekend. It really was not that difficult which I was pleasantly surprised by. Have been rewarded by scales being much more respectable this morning. Off to the gym in a minute then an afternoon of films and a decent red wine I think. FD Weds and Thurs and minis tomorrow and Friday - away this weekend so want to be in a good place when it starts and also can’t get to the gym til Monday afternoon so I’ll be virtuous this week 🙂

SmellyMe · 26/05/2025 19:17

@TeaRose29 that’s great. Yes, I feel the same about full time dieting. This WOE is way better; so much more flexible; no guilt; results.

@midnights92 welcome. I’m not sure what to advise about nightshifts other than you pack a meal like you would on a day shift. For a typical FD, I will get up at 0630; eat up half my calorie allowance at 1100; eat the remaining calories for an evening meal around 1830-1900.

midnights92 · 27/05/2025 07:59

Back to the same weight I was after my second fast last week before my first day of 2 b2 today - really motivating to know whatever I get off today is all a new low weight for this push Halo

Best of luck everyone going today. My plan is an apple for lunch, another for a snack when required and a 400kcal ready meal, should take me to 550 with a couple of cups of tea.

harriethoyle · 27/05/2025 10:51

I think I'm going to try and make today day 1 of a b2b - I'm currently planning around 800 cals of food and tomorrow I have a proper FD planned. Will mean it's out the way quicker! Wish me luck...

About ready to chew my arm off today. Fasting after an indulgent weekend is always easier in theory than in practice.

Formel · 27/05/2025 13:59

Hello, can I join? I've got a bit to lose to get down to a healthy weight for the summer, and read recently about the anti-inflammatory benefits of fasting so I'm going to try for a Tues & Thurs FD.

Formel · 27/05/2025 20:55

First day achieved, kitchen closed at 466 and it was easier than I thought it would be. NFD tomorrow because I've got a gym session.

midnights92 · 27/05/2025 21:22

Kitchen closed on 830 cals. Really struggled today so abandoning the back to back days and having an Eat day tomorrow to try again on Thursday.

harriethoyle · 27/05/2025 21:24

Welcome @Formel ! come and join us and feel free to ask questions that strike you 🙂

kitchen closing on 913 which really is about as low as I can go on a PT day. Aiming for c600 tomorrow as a rough b2b which I’d be happy with if I manage it 🤞🏼 worst case scenario I’ll do another mini on Thursday and call that a win!

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 28/05/2025 18:18

Kitchen closing on 936 but today has been SO hard! I’m training tomorrow morning so I’m going to aim for a mini seeing I haven’t managed a true FD this week 🙈

OP posts:
SmellyMe · 28/05/2025 19:52

I’m gearing up for FD2 tomorrow. Lots of indulgence today so I hope I still register a loss after it! I find fast days are easier if I have protein-based meals such as eggs or tuna but definitely not tofu! The days are long with tofu! I’m not doing that again. I thought it would be low calorie and sustaining but it really isn’t!!!

CheshireSplat · 29/05/2025 08:15

Morning everyone.

I didn't do my normal Monday FD this week as we were staying at someone's house and there's no way I couldn't have not eaten lunch and tea. Same for Tuesday.

Was going to do it yesterday instead but I just couldn't psych myself up. It's madness, just one FD off, a great 4 weeks and I feel a little scared! I could do it today, but there is something in me that really doesn't want to. So I'm going to be kind to myself and have this week off and get back in the wagon on Monday.

Does anyone else get this fear? I'm not sure why I'm going through this as I feel so good from the last 4 weeks. I'm also worried I'm not going to get back in the wagon on Monday. Sending up a distress flare for help!

harriethoyle · 29/05/2025 09:36

I would suggest you push through the fear @CheshireSplat - it's one thing being kind to yourself if you're exhausted or poorly but just because you don't fancy it is a slippery slope...

OP posts:
CheshireSplat · 29/05/2025 10:00

Gah, @harriethoyle , I think you have seen straight through me!!! It is definitely a "don't fancy it"...

TeaRose29 · 29/05/2025 10:08

I’m off on holiday tomorrow, so today will be a mini - damage limitation as it’s so difficult to eat sensibly when getting up early and travelling. I’m looking forward to the food at the resort - we’ve been there before and they do a massive buffet, so I will be able to have plenty of meat, fish and veggies. Plus there are lots of activities, so I’m hoping to at least not gain weight while away.
Totally agree with you @SmellyMe about protein: on a FD I usually have a quark kefir which is 30g of protein for only about 180 calories, a collagen coffee and a homemade burger. Gets me through fine with little or no hunger.

Good luck to everyone fasting today 💪💪

harriethoyle · 29/05/2025 10:12

Maybe try for a mini @CheshireSplat - under 1000. Will put the brakes on NFD eating and get you back into the groove...

OP posts:
CheshireSplat · 29/05/2025 16:33

Thank you for the pep talk @harriethoyle . I am scarily suggestible. When I read your message I texted DH to say I wouldn't be eating whatever he had planned for tea and have got this far on 2 coffees, 2 teas and a mug of bouillon! It's not so hard ...

Formel · 29/05/2025 17:12

Second FD this week and it's definitely harder today!

CheshireSplat · 29/05/2025 19:32

Formel · 29/05/2025 17:12

Second FD this week and it's definitely harder today!

Nearly there Formel, you can eat whatever it is you want now tomorrow, and you probably won't fancy it then!

Formel · 29/05/2025 21:21

Yep! Finished today at 448 and having a mint tea. DD baked earlier so I'm promising myself a biscuit tomorrow!

midnights92 · 29/05/2025 21:29

Second fast day done today, about 810 cals. Not as tough as Tuesday but definitely not easy. Have had another drop on the scales though so about 4lb down over 2 weeks - 10st 2lb this morning and trying to get to 9st 7lb.
