Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Excellent result @SmellyMe ! I have maintained my loss this morning, which I’m pleased about - it’s all too easy to go back up a bit after a NFD. Also a NSV for me yesterday - tried on some jeans that were previously too tight, and they fit perfectly 😊.

Might try for a mini today as not doing anything special. Will see how the day unfolds.

Darker · 03/05/2025 10:19

I’ve had a bad week in terms of very poor sleep, some stress, and needing to eat to keep going. I have also had lots of exercise. Currently 2lbs up again but I feel much better today and am feeling motivated ti fast and hope for a better result on Mondays weigh-in.

Darker · 03/05/2025 10:20

All your wins are also motivating me!

Hdjdb42 · 03/05/2025 19:49

Ooh maybe I'll start tracking on my non fast day's too! How many calories do you guys have on non fast days?

TeaRose29 · 04/05/2025 09:51

Another 1/4 pound off today! Hoping to get to under 10 stones this coming week. My simplified plan is working - the protein shake has 323 calories and 48g of protein, and if I have it at about 3pm, it will keep me going for the rest of the day (for a FD, having had collagen coffee for breakfast at 121 cals, and with a small milk allowance for cups of tea). Yesterday was a NFD so I had crab salad for dinner in addition to the above, plus 2 glasses of wine Blush.

@Hdjdb42 I try to make sure that I’m under 2000 calories on NFDs, as that is about my TDEE, although it is very difficult to track when you eat out. I do either weight training or tennis most days, but I don’t take those calories burned into account.

eekwhatnow · 05/05/2025 07:29

Checking in for a mini today. Planning one today, one tomorrow and a full FD on Wednesday.

harriethoyle · 05/05/2025 07:50

I’m doing the same @eekwhatnow - very heavy weekend so need some immediate virtue to get the damage reversed! DSD is here until Thursday so we’ll have some outings and dinners etc so I’m planning minis today, Weds and a full FD Thursday along with daily gym sessions 💪🏻

TeaRose29 · 05/05/2025 10:30

Mini for me today too, as I have gym this afternoon. Another 1/4 off this morning, so am now 10.1. I can really see and feel the difference now. I’m not feeling especially hungry (because I’m not eating carbs, which make me starving) but I have felt rather tired at times, no doubt inevitable when cutting calories significantly.

Anyway, these quick losses are really encouraging me to keep going. Good luck to today’s fasters! 💪💪

Darker · 05/05/2025 10:48

Have already had freshly made juice and a yoghurt but hoping to keep the fast going now until dinner. It’s cold here, and I want to warm myself up with food, hence checking in for accountability…

SmellyMe · 05/05/2025 10:56

A FD for me, too!
good luck all

CheshireSplat · 05/05/2025 15:58

I'm doing something between a mini FD and a proper one today. Have been camping and it was so freezing at night that I'm tired, so tea and coffee and lunch have pushed me up to 400 already today. But it meant I didn't have breakfast and a small lunch so that is much better than it would have been otherwise, which was finishing last night's BBQ for breakfast.

I had such a small appetite last week. Interested to know if it was the hot weather or my head in the 5.2 game.

TeaRose29 · 05/05/2025 18:19

I had to abandon today’s mini. Walked into town (about 30 minutes) and felt really low energy, so I went into Pret and had a chai latte and almond croissant, and REALLY enjoyed them. Walked home then went to gym for heavy weights session. I’m having lamb chops and salad for dinner. So not a FD but not crazy, and hoping will stay the same. I’ll be away for the next two days, so next FD will be Thursday.

eekwhatnow · 05/05/2025 20:10

Well done fasters and mini fasters. And well done @TeaRose29 Kitchen closed on 1100 here so just about OK for a mini. Feeling slightly ropey tonight. Might be coming down with something which would be a right pain.

harriethoyle · 05/05/2025 21:06

Kitchen closed on 898 which included the HEROIC effort of not having a biscoff milkshake at slim chickens and settling for the undressed salad bowl instead 😭 if I’m not thin tomorrow I’ll be RAGING!! 🤣

DH has an emergency dentist appointment tomorrow so going to hold off eating til I know if he’s having a tooth pulled. If he does I’ll probably mini or fast in solidarity as there’s no point cooking for one…

Morning all

Sounds like you've all been doing great here

Checking in for a FD for me. I'm done kicking my peri menopausal wounds and refocused. Scales this morning showed me at 93.6kg which is fab as I didn't fast last week in the end.

Today I'm enjoying a coffee now, have some chicken and salad for lunch and soup for dinner. Should come in just under 500 unless I sneak a biscuit... Which I've typed specifically so I don't!

@harriethoyle that really was heroic! Bloody well done and good planning for today too

SmellyMe · 06/05/2025 07:08

Well done @harriethoyle and @TeaRose29; good luck @OohMrDarcy (enjoying 30 years since BBC production celebrations?).

I got through the FD yesterday. I always think I can’t do this and then I do. Phew.

eekwhatnow · 06/05/2025 07:24

Checking in for another mini. Feeling ropey so once I’ve dropped kids and walked dog am going back to bed with herbal tea and something trashy. Not in office and no pressing work either thank goodness.

aberjenagain · 06/05/2025 08:08

Morning all. Sheepishly poking my head back round the door. Came down with a rotten cold after my FD two weeks ago, then when that had gone rather overdid it on ice cream and alcohol (combo of weather and then friends staying for the long weekend).

So, back on it with FD today. May is always tricky as work always seems to ramp up this month, plus 2 bank hols and 2 family birthdays. This last week has been reminder that I need to be on it with planning and tracking my meals to accommodate splurging a bit for celebrations.

harriethoyle · 06/05/2025 10:51

You’ve got this @aberjenagain !

I’ve been to PT, DH off to emergency dentist at 12 so I’m assuming he’ll be on soup later… I’ll get a mini in today I reckon 🤞🏼

OohMrDarcy · 06/05/2025 21:36

Kitchen closed on around 540.

Np biscuits stolen just an extra coffee to get through 😇

OohMrDarcy · 07/05/2025 05:32

Scales down to a new low this morning (just!)

Two busy NFD for me with lots of travel and then FD2 is going to be Friday or Saturday

eekwhatnow · 07/05/2025 07:15

Well done @OohMrDarcy
I didn’t track on my mini yesterday but think could probably just about be called one! Full FD today and already hungry.

Darker · 07/05/2025 08:14

I’m also down today after a NFD yesterday. These pounds move in mysterious ways.

Going to try an unscheduled fast day today because I’m feeling motivated and I have family over at the weekend which means lots of food and wine.

Hdjdb42 · 07/05/2025 08:57

Moved my fast from yesterday to today as we had left over birthday cake in the house! Fingers crossed for today!

harriethoyle · 07/05/2025 09:19

Weekend damage undone when I got on the scales today- phew! Steak for tea tonight but have a PT session so that should all balance out. Mini tomorrow as I’d forgotten DSD wants to go to the ENORMOUS shopping centre near us so a proper FD will be challenging I suspect…
