Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.
For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting.

JARGON alert
16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.

Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF

No alcohol or junk on FDs

Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, tel:850-1000 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.

Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

I think it’s more the caffeine hit I’d miss from coffee…

kitchen closing here on 841. Absolutely starving after the gym this morning so I think that confirms I can’t do a true FD on a proper gym day! Will aim for something similar tomorrow I think as am back at the gym before work.

Hdjdb42 · 29/04/2025 18:14

Kitchen closed at 637. Found today quite hard for some reason. Hoping to do a back to back tomorrow. Well done to everyone who fasted today! 💪 💪 💪

harriethoyle · 29/04/2025 22:21

Kitchen closing on 893 with a PT session this morning. I can cope with that! Will probably aim for another mini on Thursday which is also a gym day…

Well I managed about 650 yesterday, weight stayed the same last week despite being pretty ill. We have summer again! Onwards and upwards 👍

eekwhatnow · 30/04/2025 08:48

Checking in for FD2. Didn’t have an amazing NFD yesterday so want to make sure today is good. Miso soup, salad, broccoli, eggs and an early night planned.

Hdjdb42 · 30/04/2025 19:38

Kitchen closed at 845. Didn't do so well today, as i was tempted by an ice cream with the kids! It was a back to back! Will see if tomorrow will be any better for a third attempt. Well done to everyone who fasted today! 💪 💪 💪

eekwhatnow · 30/04/2025 19:55

599 which is ok but most of that was made up of Jaffa cakes which isn’t great. Ah well.

Mommybunny · 30/04/2025 20:28

Hi everyone, back after a posting but not fasting hiatus. Great and inspirational to see all the progress during the time I’ve been away!

I was thrilled before Easter to have had a weigh in at 60.9kg, which is .9kg off my target back when I was doing WW a couple of years ago. Although I’ve been keeping with 3FDs per week, most of them b2b, I was pretty indulgent on NFDs over Easter and since with all the traveling I’ve been doing (had to take DD on a uni open day and made the most of it). I haven’t weighed myself since before Easter and I’m coming off a 3 day b2b so will weigh myself tomorrow and I’m dreading it a little bit - I bought a pair of M&S trousers in a 10 that are a bit snugger than I would like (they didn’t have a 12 and I really needed them!). But I know I need to take myself in hand and sort out my NFD eating. I’m doing so well on my FDs, especially when I’m working away from home (DH doesn’t have to deal with hangry old me!) that I really don’t want to waste it with over indulgence when I’m not fasting.

eekwhatnow · 01/05/2025 07:03

A pound off this morning. Would have liked more but probably fair.
@Mommybunnyits my NFDs that are an issue too. Good luck at your weigh in.

SmellyMe · 01/05/2025 07:47

I haven’t lost anything in a week! So annoyed. It makes it harder to approach the fasting. I have been pretty good in my NFDs and I even went for a run yesterday which I never do during the week. I hope today’s FD leads to some loss or I’ll have to resort to full time calorie controlled. Is a month enough of a trial on 5:2 or would you go longer?

CheshireSplat · 01/05/2025 07:51

Hello 👋. Can I join please?

This is my 4th time on the 5:2 threads (over 10 years ) and I recognise a couple of names. Stopped before because I'd plateaued (sp?) so I thought I was probably binging on NFDs.

Since then I've had counselling so am a bit nicer to myself, have massively cut down alcohol and have spent far too much time on the weight loss jab threads trying to get into the mind of less food noise. I'm really trying to dress nicer but when I look around the streets for inspiration, the women I think look good are always slim.

So, I'm taking the plunge again. Did my first FD on Monday. Found it super easy and closed the kitchen on 446. Haven't been that hungry on Tuesday or Wednesday (probably the amazing weather) which means I've woken this morning (FD2) a little peckish. Not ideal! This'll be a test of my resolve at an early stage!

I also wonder if I used to self sabotage because would worry that I'd just put any weight lost back on once I stopped, because I couldn't eat less for ever. I'm middle aged now (47) and have a lower appetite and am think there's absolutely no problem with eating less for ever. In fact that'll be a good thing. Huge mind shift for me.

Sorry, this is a bit of an essay.

I'm 5'3"
SW 11 stone 8
BMI around 29
Not sure of goal weight. Got to 10 stone for my wedding but that involved starving myself for a couple of weeks and taking a Chinese powder of some sort (?) as my dress wouldn't do up. When I was really fit and in my 20s I was 10 stone 7.

TeaRose29 · 01/05/2025 11:31

Stuck on a bit of a plateau, so am going to do the Dukan diet (brutal but always works) during May - off on holiday on 30th and want to drop the last 5 pounds. 1st of May feels like a good day to start! I’m going to combine this with FDs, which will be referred to from hereonin as ‘Psycho Dukan Minis’. One planned for today (about 700 cals):

B = collagen coffee
L = protein shake
D = tinned salmon

We are going to a gig tonight, so I’ve volunteered to drive and will have diet coke to drink 😊. Good luck to today’s fasters!

Mommybunny · 01/05/2025 13:45

Welcome @CheshireSplat - good luck in your new health journey!

@SmellyMe - I did 5:2 a few years ago and found i lost a bit of weight but plateaued before I’d hit my goal and never got out of the rut. I’m doing 4:3 now and I think the extra day in the week makes the difference.

Well done @eekwhatnow !

My weigh in had me up .65kg (about a pound and a half) on my pre Easter weight but I’m not beating myself up about it. It’s not nearly as bad as I’d feared.

Hdjdb42 · 01/05/2025 20:39

Kitchen closed at 602. That is 3 back to backs completed. Looking forward to a bacon bagel tomorrow! 😋 Well done to everyone who fasted today.

CheshireSplat · 01/05/2025 21:12

ThanksMommy .

Kitchen closed at 681. I'm happy with that for day two of week one!

harriethoyle · 02/05/2025 08:43

Welcome newcomers and returners! @Mommybunny @eekwhatnow my NFD were definitely undoing a lot of my hard work so I started tracking them 12 weeks ago and it’s amazing the difference it makes. I’m now about 5kg down and maintaining that. It’s a faff but I’d recommend it to regulate things…

AND a reminder that the scales don’t always tell the truth! Thursday morning I was 0.5kg up having been really virtuous. Thought sod it and had wine, chocolate and gin last night. This morning? Scales 0.5kg down 🤣 so focus on the trajectory not the individual readings! They’re not always your friend 🤭

Yesterday ended up as a proper FD, as my protein shake filled me up so much that I didn’t eat my salmon later. And rewarded this morning - 2 pounds off - YAY! Now 10.1 1/2, which is the lowest I’ve been for a year.

Totally second what Harriet says about tracking all the time. Controlling the NFDs makes a big difference. I don’t mind because I’m a nerd. I use Carb Manager. I’m thinking that going forward (at least for this month) I might use a sort of “building blocks” approach, with the protein shake as the main foundation. On FDs just have this and my collagen coffee for breakfast, and on NFDs have an extra meal of meat/fish and veg/salad in the evenings. I’m determined to get to 9.12 by the end of May.

@harriethoyle you have done incredibly well to lose 5kg so quickly, and because you are weight training, that is likely to be pure fat that you have lost.

I’m playing tennis for two hours later today, so will probably be a NFD but controlled as above.

OohMrDarcy · 02/05/2025 09:32

Morning all

have taken some time to reset my brain this week - been to see the doc re possible perimenopause who agrees its possible based on symptoms though under 45 (44!) so maybe not - he's ordered a raft of blood tests to check its nothing else, and included hormone function... which I have in a couple of weeks and if nothing else comes back he will try me on HRT even if hormone shows fine as does sound hormonal to him too! fingers crossed

am trying to focus on increasing fiber as well as reducing carbs / including protein this week which I know I don't do enough of - so far its involved a dollop of hummous and a raw carrot with my lunch (as well as usual bit of salad or veg with dinner) which whilst not ideal, is a step in the right direction as long as I keep an eye on the cals of it!

back to 5:2 FDs next week

SmellyMe · 03/05/2025 07:21

@harriethoyle too true. I woke up on my FD on Thursday the same weight I was when I went to bed and the same weight I was before my last FD. It’s really hard not to eat a bacon sandwich for breakfast with those stats in front of you!! I am a geek like @TeaRose29 so I always want more data and numbers.

well, I didn’t have the bacon sandwich and I fasted. I finally recorded a loss which was enough to make me want to continue. In month 1, I have lost 2.2kg/4.85lbs in a month and I still have one FD left to include on Monday. I’m happy with that :)

have a nice weekend :)

SmellyMe · 03/05/2025 07:39

Oh and I track on NFDs too
