Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

morning all

Weighed in today at 108.3kg meaning a loss this week of 1.1kg and a total loss since restarting 5:2 in feb of 6.5kg

Checking in for a monday FD where I have my left over mini roast all prepped and ready to go this evening

hope everyone had a good weekend

berryhand · 22/04/2024 09:13

Agree @strangerInStrangeLand that is tricky. I'd just say you find it works for you and politely just not engage much further. They'll soon get bored. So rude of them though!

@harriethoyle I'm fasting with you today. Heavy weekend on the sweet treats for me so hopefully not too much damage...

strangerInStrangeLand · 22/04/2024 09:26

Thanks for the solidarity @OohMrDarcy @harriethoyle @berryhand I can send them off on museum trips on my fast days too ;-) its only 3 weeks I will be strong.

@OohMrDarcy wow! amazing progress!! Awesome!

I m also fasting with you all today Week 3 day 1. Mondays is water only and Day2 is usual 500 calories, I may do the 500 one tomorrow and bump myself to 650 as it is b2b.
Good luck all fasters!!

harriethoyle · 22/04/2024 09:50

Fabulous @OohMrDarcy well done!

We've got this @strangerInStrangeLand @berryhand @OohMrDarcy ... Here's to a Monday filled with strong willpower!

Hi all, back from skiing and a cheese fest… and I’m fasting today, good luck everyone else and see you later!

OohMrDarcy · 22/04/2024 12:26

ahem - just popping in with an NSV - according to the NHS (and I know BMI is a bit rubbish in some ways, but this seems relevant!) I'm no longer morbidly obese!
It says under 40 BMI for that and I'm now 39.7 (started last summer at 44.8 (when I restarted 16:8) and restarted 5:2 at 42.1

very pleased with the progress in that area!

strangerInStrangeLand · 22/04/2024 13:24

@OohMrDarcy Well Done!!!!!

I m going strong with ginger teas and hot water and lemon and salt water. I actually forgot that I hadnt eaten and didnt get tempted when SO roasted some chicken and spread the fragrance. I like to believe week 3 has become slightly easier .

people say they get clarity of mind on fasting, I havent reached that yet. my mind is kinda bla on fasting days :-)

Any long time fasters here? I m reading a very cool old thread to keep myself motivated. I wonder if some of you from the thread are still here.

@strangerInStrangeLand - I posted on that thread after my first year of 5:2!

BigChocFrenzy was the poster I was trying to think of who used to look after these threads - wonder where they've gone

strangerInStrangeLand · 22/04/2024 13:37

@OohMrDarcy Nice!! I may find you soon on here, I m reading up :-) 1 year of 5:2 wow!

Porridgeislife · 22/04/2024 15:14

Also on the fast train today. I only managed 1 day last week; with work travel/meals and early starts it just wasn’t feasible.

I’ve been sipping lots of tea today and have a dinner of grilled eggplants with Moroccan spiced mince and salad planned 😋My week is a lot quieter so will do Wednesday and possibly Thursday as well.

OohMrDarcy · 22/04/2024 20:22

Kitchen closed on 585, how has everyone else done today?

harriethoyle · 22/04/2024 20:57

Kitchen closing on 607. NFD tomorrow then back on Wednesday for a b2b!

OP posts:
strangerInStrangeLand · 22/04/2024 22:17

fast day done. Harder in a way than last 2 weeks as I have a slight headache. Also easier in a way as I was not really tempted to eat anything.

harriethoyle · 23/04/2024 09:45

A pound off this morning and am attempting a) a sensible NFD b) trampolining class after work so hopefully will keep it off before tomorrow's b2b!

Consistent almost 1kg weight loss for week 3, Under 70kg!! 💃 Started at 74.6 and today 69.6. 😘 74.6 was excessive water due to bloating and inflammation. It came on too quickly as well one day I was 72 and next almost 75. So realistically it is 3 kg down and not 5, which is really really awesome for me. I struggle to lose even 0.5 kg in 2 weeks. Next milestone under 65.

Today b2b 650 calories, still on water/black coffee .
Good luck to any other fasters today!

harriethoyle · 23/04/2024 10:17

Fabulous @strangerInStrangeLand well done

OP posts:
strangerInStrangeLand · 23/04/2024 12:50

ha ha ha, I didnt realise it. Back to back is so hard, my body was READY TO EAT after yesterdays fast. Lunch is already 600 calories. Let me see if I can manage the rest of the day under 100 calories.

sweetgingercat · 23/04/2024 15:21

I failed my fast yesterday. I was doing some ridiculous, extreme diy all day with my other half and I just couldn't keep it up and ended up feeling really dizzy!

Back on today though. I've had an apple and a miso soup so far and I am feeling HUNGRY!

Well done @OohMrDarcy and @strangerInStrangeLand these successes keep the rest of us all going too!

OohMrDarcy · 23/04/2024 17:33

Congratulations @strangerInStrangeLand

@sweetgingercat you didn't fail, you repriorotised and postponed - all in the mindset!

strangerInStrangeLand · 23/04/2024 17:35

kitchen closed at 721 calories. B2B target was 650 but as yesterday was 0, I m counting it as win.

harriethoyle · 24/04/2024 09:29

I'd definitely take that as a win @strangerInStrangeLand

Who's with me today? A restrained NFD yesterday and no damage done on the scales, so hopefully a little bit more shaved off with the next two FD.

b2b, tuna thin and baked fish for today's meals. WFH so an added challenge!

OP posts:
strangerInStrangeLand · 24/04/2024 18:11

@harriethoyle Oh how do u manage consistent b2bs ! It was so much harder for me than with gap!
Well done on the restrained NFD! 👌

harriethoyle · 24/04/2024 19:52

I aim for 650 calories both days @strangerInStrangeLand and never less than 500 calories on day 1. There's no way I could do a water fast then an eating fast!

OP posts:
OohMrDarcy · 25/04/2024 08:29

Checking in for Thursday FD here... making spag bol for dinner, so I'll just have a portion of the bolognaise as my main and some soup at lunchtime...
