Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Yes great work @Porridgeislife and @strangerInStrangeLand.

Kitchen closing here realistically arouse 550 I reckon. Had a 446 calorie tuna bake thing this afternoon but then nibbled the remnants of DD's peanut butter on toast which probably takes me over. Not too bad overall though.

Aiming for a lower cal day tomorrow too.

How did you get on @harriethoyle?

harriethoyle · 10/04/2024 20:51

Kitchen closing here on 604 @berryhand and day 2 tomorrow so I'm happy with that. Day 3 of pilates before bed!

berryhand · 10/04/2024 20:56

Just noticed my unfortunate typo. I probably was aroused by the toast tbh 😂

Good work @harriethoyle, I am going to give the pilates a go. Did a short weights workout today but didn't overdo it.

harriethoyle · 10/04/2024 21:00

Well done fasters. I was doing great whilst the kids were away, now they're back and it's all gone to pot. Exceeded TDEE today by about 250 kcal.

However, kitchen closed at 7.15, so I can manage 14 hours fasting. I'm working tomorrow so I'll be busy, and I'm making a frittata type thing to take for lunch.

harriethoyle · 11/04/2024 08:28

Morning all, signing in for FD3 - anyone with me?

OP posts:
strangerInStrangeLand · 11/04/2024 10:08

Yesterday fasting finished at 550. surprisingly easy with 2 meals of egg + half slice bread and lot of veggies and 2 very small cups of coffee with coffee mate.
Not much weight shifted after day 2 only 0.2 gms I m thinking its all the fiber from yesterday thats still being digested ;-)

Waspie · 11/04/2024 10:22

Well done Wednesday fasters! I'm joining you HH - although I'm not looking forward to it as I'm meeting a couple of friends for coffee and cake in a while. I have been practising my coffee shop order: "no cake for me, just a black americano please". Wish me luck Grin

harriethoyle · 11/04/2024 10:29

Slow and steady wins the race @strangerInStrangeLand - whilst I weigh every week day, I only track on a weekly basis. As long as I've got a generally downward trajectory that suits me!

@Waspie good luck - I'm currently mainlining black coffee and trying to ignore the cake in the communal kitchen. Desk working until 1pm, rather than people facing, which will make that a LOT harder 😂

Joining you too @Waspie @harriethoyle 💪

I’ve been on my Peloton this morning and my husband has brought me an oat latte. Will skip lunch and go for a walk. Plan is to drink herbal tea til dinner of chicken breast and steamed veg 🥕

strangerInStrangeLand · 11/04/2024 12:11

Thanks @harriethoyle yes True. I m good with the slow part! but steady part not so much! 😂

Good luck to the fasters. may all you be blessed with an Iron will to resist coffee shop smells

harriethoyle · 11/04/2024 19:30

Kitchen closing on 757 which makes 1361 for the b2b. Happy with that and already looking forward longingly to tomorrow morning's breakfast bagel 🥯 😋

Dinner tonight consisted of 10 roast potatoes and gravy, with one chicken thigh 🤣 looking forward to tomorrow's FD! Anyone with me?!

OP posts:
berryhand · 14/04/2024 21:35

That sounds delicious @harriethoyle 😂

I'm with you tomorrow! Just had a McDonald's so I definitely need to be.

harriethoyle · 15/04/2024 08:18

Signing in. FD b2b today and tomorrow, DSD staying Wed-Fri so I'll intermittent fast rather than 5:2 as no doubt there'll be at least one meal out!

OohMrDarcy · 15/04/2024 09:34

Hi all

I'm back from sunny spain and straight back on it today with a FD!

Have weighed in post holiday at 109.4kg - which is the same as my last official weigh pre holiday - am over the moon with that! Had unofficially hit a low of 108.9 just prior to leaving but am still very happy - my first ever adult holiday where I enjoyed myself and ate what I wanted etc but didn't really gain weight!

Hope everyone is doing well

strangerInStrangeLand · 15/04/2024 10:04

Week 2, day 1 of fasting is already here! Planning on water fasting today. Good luck to all fasters!!

harriethoyle · 15/04/2024 11:07

That's great @OohMrDarcy - well done, and definitely the right thing to get straight back on it :-)

Good luck @strangerInStrangeLand

Afternoon all! Excellent post-holiday result @OohMrDarcy

I am doing day one of a b2b today, had some chicken and veg noodles and planning some kimchi-based thing later.

strangerInStrangeLand · 15/04/2024 20:03

Today is success, well almost. water fast with lots of herbal teas and a black coffee with pinch of salt and will sleep in an hour and a half . Hope everyone who was fasting had a good fasting day too.

harriethoyle · 15/04/2024 20:28

Kitchen closing here at 546. Back tomorrow!

OP posts:
berryhand · 15/04/2024 20:29

Good work @strangerInStrangeLand. Kitchen closing on about 620 here. Day two of b2b tomorrow

OohMrDarcy · 15/04/2024 20:46

Kitchen closed on 581

NFD for me tomorrow

Porridgeislife · 16/04/2024 07:30

First fast day of my second week done for 400g down. I’ve decided to only weigh after fast days at this point.

Had a bit of a weak moment as my toddler started opening snacks before dinner and I ended up finishing them so 718 total calories instead of 500.

Congratulations on your holiday bonus @OohMrDarcy I think all of us can relate to normally coming back from holiday a bit heavier!

harriethoyle · 16/04/2024 08:08

Signing in for day 2 of a b2b. WFH so it'll be a challenge!
