Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Second fd for me today, came in at just under 750 of a 800 target. Not bad considering I didn't have much in to get creative with.. let's just ignore the whole 5 a day recommendation today though... could have had an apple, but went for a kitkat 😂

berryhand · 21/03/2024 20:44

Good start @Nepenthe it does take a while to work out what works best for you and cut your calorie cloth accordingly!

I've been so insanely busy at work today there was genuinely no time to eat. Not long got home so treating myself to marmite on toast. Should come in just under 450 if I count the pear I scoffed in the middle of a meeting.

Well done to fellow fasters! I am off the wagon now for the weekend but will try and be vaguely sensible who am I kidding

harriethoyle · 22/03/2024 08:18

Well done @AuntMarch - that's a great first week!

Have maintained this week on 2FDs which fits with the pattern I've noticed - I need to do three or be insanely virtuous on nfds to lose. Fasting mon/tues and mini on Wed next week.

Very indulgent weekend coming up, eldest dsd staying and we've dinner at friends and a request from her for a visit to her favourite curry house. I'm also making her mini egg brownies as a pre-Easter treat definitely not trying to buy her love 🤣

See you on Monday when I've put on 4 kgs!

Nepenthe · 22/03/2024 17:18

@harriethoyle Mini egg brownies sound amazing!

NFD for me today and I've done ok, I'm on 730 ish calories so far, but I've got the ladies coming round tonight. There may be wine. And snacks.

harriethoyle · 22/03/2024 18:20

I'll report back @Nepenthe . Friday is wine day in this house too! I've just transformed an indifferent white by chucking in soda water and aperol #domesticgoddess 🤣

Good luck and welcome @Nepenthe! We are a friendly bunch. Wish I'd started fasting sooner, find it really works for me and I always assumed I'd never stick to it but it's much easier than calorie counting generally.

@Tinydancer123 I know you do quite a lot of low calorie days but is it worth trying the traditional 5:2 approach, just basic 500 on two days then TDEE on the others? I wonder if where you've been doing quite a lot of 800-1000k days your body has kicked into retaining mode?

I agree I will try this also trying to be super super good . Heading to waitroise to get some lower cal / % wine xxxx

Morning all

Feel for you @harriethoyle - hope you get your freshly baked bread very soon!

@Tinydancer123 - am I right in remember you don't have much to lose? If so it will take longer as the difference between TDEE and FD won't be as much. Agree with the others though - track everything, also - if you're currently eating to current weight TDEE you can change that to goal weight TDEE.

welcome @Nepenthe we are a friendly bunch so jump right in.

good luck to all those fasting today!

Thank you so much ! I will do this . Think I also need to stick to two 500 days as creeping up with back to back x hope you are well xx

AuntMarch · 23/03/2024 16:05

Last day of my first week today and I have rather enjoyed it. I've been counting the calories on NFD too, that's what I've been doing with a daily deficit until I decided to switch and will keep doing until I'm confident I won't be going crazy, but its been great being able to be more relaxed with choices on those other days. I weighed Friday after my second FD and was 3.4lb down - I know it won't always be that much of a difference but it was a good boost!

OohMrDarcy · 24/03/2024 07:17

That is amazing @AuntMarch congratulations!

I'm checking in for a Sunday FD/ Mini here. After last week I really want to end the week strong!

OohMrDarcy · 24/03/2024 20:19

Kitchen closed around 680 today, happy with that

sweetgingercat · 25/03/2024 08:38

Morning all, checking in for a fast day. Nearly back into my non stretch maroon/purply jeans.

well done @AuntMarch for your loss and @OohMrDarcy for Sunday fasting! I don’t think I could do it on a Sunday…

OohMrDarcy · 25/03/2024 08:43

Morning all

Monday weigh in here at 109.4kg meaning a loss of 0.9kg (and hit first mini goal of under 110kg - next one is 105kg)
total loss since restarting 5:2 is 5.4kg in just over a month - super happy with that!

One more week until my holidays so checking back in for another Monday FD (making yesterday b2b) going to aim for 3 this week in the hope of minimising damage whilst away.

Got my food all planned out - a left over roast (this has become a habit of mine on a Monday fasting or not, the kids get an easy dinner and I get extra veggies with no effort), and a wrap with some of the left over chicken and a drizzle of super light mayo - doesn't feel restrictive at all as long as I don't think about the easter egg I've got sat on the side but can't touch!

@sweetgingercat - Sunday wasn't too bad - had my roast, just less roasties and gravy than I'd choose normally, and no pud.

Good luck to all Monday fasters, we've got this

harriethoyle · 25/03/2024 09:08

Well done @OohMrDarcy and @AuntMarch !

Signing in for a FD - fabulous weekend but brownies, curry, brownies, pie, brownies, and baileys mean 2kg on this morning 😂FD today and Wednesday and then double dentists appointment tomorrow so I suspect I won't want to eat anything at all...

Morning all.

Attempting a fd here, a bit better prepared than last time - I boiled some eggs last night and have brought two to work for my lunch today.

Waspie · 25/03/2024 09:20

Well done @OohMrDarcy - very impressive!

I'm checking in for Monday fast day too. Had a poor Sunday, intake wise, although I did have only one small roastie with the roast beef yesterday (every little helps apparently).

I've also banned Easter Eggs from the house. DS is not best pleased Grin

Good luck Monday fasters!

berryhand · 25/03/2024 09:38

Good luck fasters! I have also had an extremely indulgent weekend but not fasting today as DD off school sick. Planning normal FDs tomorrow and Friday.

Tinydancer123 · 25/03/2024 10:16

Hi all , I hope you are all ok. I had a very bad weekend with 2 kg on. After wine yest I have not fasted and had a crumpet this morning . Going to try and keep this is as 500 /600 cal day. We have a chicken salad for tea. Any other low cal gems I can eat ? As will struggle after wine.
Xx

Nepenthe · 25/03/2024 17:44

Well, I don't know how you guys are managing 500 calories. I was ravenous when I got in from work, and I was already on 700+! I've tried to eat mostly protein based things, but I've been hungry all day.

harriethoyle · 25/03/2024 19:09

@Nepenthe I promise you it gets easier! Make sure you drink a lot of fluids. Bulk up with salad and veg ie broccoli. Skip breakfast and push through to lunch.

Kitchen closing here on 562. Dentist tomorrow so probably won't want to eat 😂

OP posts:
Nepenthe · 25/03/2024 21:05

@harriethoyle I did have a load of salad for dinner tonight, but then I ruined it all with snacks because I was grumpy 😠

I'm pretty confident I'm still eating less than usual though, so hopefully it'll help.

sweetgingercat · 26/03/2024 00:10

Kitchen closed on 504 tonight.

@Tinydancer123 low cal foods I often eat are cottage cheese, tuna, prawns, and smoked salmon which somehow is really filling…

@Nepenthe I agree with @harriethoyle, it does get easier especially if you avoid carbs during fast days and sometimes even the night before. Over time somehow your body seems to adjust and ylu don’t feel as hungry. If you feel weak or have a headache, I found drinking lemon juice and water with a little salt helps. And not eating in the morning seems to help. Good luck for your next fast!

harriethoyle · 26/03/2024 07:42

I've worked out that if I skip breakfast I'll be c.600 cals for today (because of post dentist friendly foods!). So i might as well do a b2b!

OP posts:
Waspie · 26/03/2024 08:22

Kitchen closed on 445 yesterday. I am finding that if I don't eat anything at all I can push through until around 6pm and then have a protein and vege stir fry. I had a black coffee for breakfast and a diet coke for lunch yesterday. I think the trick is to drink lots of water. Cleaning my teeth can also help as I find I start to get an unpleasant taste in my mouth by early afternoon (how many calories in Colgate?!)

Good luck at the dentist @harriethoyle

Good luck to anyone fasting today!

Nepenthe · 26/03/2024 09:13

Thanks for the encouragement. I finally put the snacks away at about 10.30 last night, but I'm not feeling too hungry since far. I have plenty of water to hand, and lunch is a hard boiled egg and a load of salad.

Good luck everyone fasting today.
