Who wants to start intermittent fasting?

I'm no expert but I have been doing Intermittent Fasting (IF) since September and I've lost 9kg/ a stone.

I eat breakfast at 7:30, lunch and the tea at 4. So my eating window is finished by 4:30pm. So it's a 9 hour eating window and 15 hours of fasting.

I haven't read any books about it but I do listen to podcasts about it.

I don't know anyone in real life who does IF so thought there would be a community here.

Well done to everyone who is still perservering with IF. I have been doing intermittent fasting for 5 months now, on average 19:5, and I lost 9kg over 3 months but then it plateaued and now for 7 weeks it's been gradually going back up. If it had just plateaued I'd have probably stuck with it and waited to see if I lost any weight but now that it's starting to go back up I've decided I need to try something else. I've read Mindy Pelz book Fast Like a Girl and I'm going to try her recommendation of tying it all to my cycle, eating different types of foods at different stages in the month, and including some 36 hour fasts. It all sounds a bit complicated but I've planned it out now and I will try my first 36 hour fast Thur - Sat, wish me luck! Anyone else following Mindy's recommendations?

Will you let us know how it all goes? There's loads of podcasts with her on.

@dannyufcfan what exercise do you do? I hula hoop for 15 mins and use 2kg hand weights whilst doing it. I also then do 40 squats and 20 half pushups. That's about 20 mins of exercise a day most days.

NatureGlimmers · 27/04/2024 12:53

@brightpompoms just finished a 39 hour fast. The longest I'd done before that would have been about 22/23 hours. I felt great when I woke up this morning (about 35 hours in), very sharp and focused and not at all hungry. It wasn't too difficult to not eat yesterday, a bit weird psychologically not to have dinner and I did feel pretty hungry but nothing major. I had a bad headache early afternoon yesterday so I put some salt in my coffee (as recommended by Jason Fung) and that seemed to fix it. I'm only on day 4 of Mindy's plan so I will wait until next week to see if it seems to be working from a weight loss perspective.

How's everyone got on this week?

brightpompoms · 27/04/2024 15:31

@NatureGlimmers wow wow wow. I can't imagine fasting that long. That's impressive.

NatureGlimmers · 28/04/2024 11:55

@brightpompoms I actually think that all the hard work is done doing the 24 hours fasts like you've been doing because post 24 hours the hunger seemed to go away! I wonder when it would kick back in again. Once I started eating again I felt extremely full and uncomfortable, even though I tried to ease back in slowly and not eat large meals. I'll have to play around with what I eat after a long fast to see what works.

brightpompoms · 29/04/2024 20:56

@NatureGlimmers I agree. I feel full very quickly after eating now and then sleepy!

NatureGlimmers · 06/05/2024 14:33

1st full week of fasting "like a girl" seems to have gone well, lost 1.6kg/3.5lb. Feels good after plateauing/increasing since March.

Hope everyone else is getting on OK over the bank holiday.

NatureGlimmers · 12/05/2024 12:41

Lost 1kg/2.2lb this week so pretty pleased with that. How's everyone doing? How is your fasting going @brightpompoms, done any more 24 hour fasts?

BobbleHatDay · 13/05/2024 07:21

Wow - that's a long fast @NatureGlimmers. I'm still doing 8:30pm-1pm weekdays, and bit shorter than that on weekends. Down almost 5kg in total (since Jan), I'm below overweight range on bmi, ideally looking to lose another 5kg, to get me down to pre-baby weight! Summer work trousers definitely feeling looser! How's everyone else doing?

brightpompoms · 13/05/2024 17:08

@NatureGlimmers hiya! I'm doing well. I weigh the least I've weighed for decades so I feel fab. The last few days have been tough and I've been barely scraping fasting for 12 hours over the weekend.
But that's fine by me and you have to be realistic that this is a lifestyle now.

I haven't done anymore 24 hour fasts yet. One a month is my aim. I did 15 overnight today so back to better ways.

Congratulations on your weight loss. Are you still reading the book? I'm reading Atomic Habits and although it's now about fasting it is about positive habits. I got it from the library and I'd recommend it as an easy read.

Rowdythree · 16/05/2024 20:52

Wow @NatureGlimmers that is very inspiring! Congratulations on your weight loss! I started Fast Like a Girl, but I must admit I didn't get more than a couple of chapters in. I'm definitely going to start reading it again, although I can't imagine fasting for that long!

I've been fasting since February and I've lost just under 4kg since then. It's slow and steady but I'm fine with that. I've celebrated birthdays anniversary's and had weekends away and managed to not put any back on which I feel is an achievement. I'm going away for 2 weeks next week, but I'm hoping to stick to my fasting as much as possible, and to do plenty of swimming and walking. I'll be happy if I come back without putting any back on 🙏🏻

NewYearNewYu · 16/05/2024 21:40

I have lost exactly 2 stone since the start of the year. I still have plenty to lose but my bmi starts with a 3 now not a 4 so I am just obese rather than morbidly obese 😣
I do roughly 20:4 fasting.

Rowdythree · 06/06/2024 14:28

Hello everyone, I hope you're all doing well.

I'm back from my 2 week break where I did not stick to fasting at all 😬 I did lots of walking and swimming and had a few indulgences, it was lovely.

I'm not weighing myself, but I am easing back into fasting now I'm home. I'll do 16:8 for this week and then back to my usual 18:6.

brightpompoms · 06/06/2024 17:03

Welcome back, I'd be tempted to weigh...not to beat myself up but to see what the two weeks did to me. I bet it's not as bad as you think!

In other news have you seen Dr Micheal Mosley is missing?

NewYearNewYu · 06/06/2024 18:35

I did see the news about Michael Mosley, it’s very odd that he left his mobile phone behind at the holiday home.
I have lost 4lbs since I last posted on here mid May so that’s great. Do we have a usual weigh in day?

brightpompoms · 06/06/2024 19:05

@NewYearNewYu 4lb is bloody brilliant. my weigh in day is a Friday. I haven't been updating here sorry but I've lost weight and I'm thrilled.

I've been keeping up with fasting 99.9% of the time. I've dropped down a dress size and I've been hooping and doing weights every day too so I feel great.

I drink wine most weekends and have had a few heavy nights out but overall things are obviously working out.

NewYearNewYu · 06/06/2024 19:52

@brightpompoms well done to you too. I am happy to weigh in tomorrow and post it here for accountability.

NewYearNewYu · 07/06/2024 07:33

SW 1st January 17 stone 5
CW 7th June 15 stone 1
TW 1st July 14 stone 13

Only 2lbs to go to have a different number at the beginning of my weight, which shouldn’t matter but feels oddly satisfying.

brightpompoms · 07/06/2024 08:50

@NewYearNewYu you are doing so well! You are almost there!

I weighed today at I've put on weight (14oz) but still at target weight so I have to be happy with that!

brightpompoms · 14/06/2024 19:39

I stayed exactly the same weight this week which is a miracle!

NewYearNewYu · 14/06/2024 19:44

I have now dropped to a weight that starts with a 14, which is great. Anyone else still hanging on in there?

itsmeagainagain · 14/06/2024 22:51

wow @NewYearNewYu that is amazing well done! what is your fasting routine?

NewYearNewYu · 15/06/2024 07:09

I do 20:4 on a good day. I have a late lunch and early tea as that is when my young children eat. Eating after such a long fast you feel sick if you eat a large meal. Then having your second meal only 4 hours later means it is hard to overeat than as well. If I have a special occasion meal I will do OMAD and eat all my calories in one go. When I stick to it the weight comes off fairly steadily. When I hit a plateau it is usually because I am not sticking to the rules above.

brightpompoms · 15/06/2024 08:36

@NewYearNewYu you must feel great at the progress.

@itsmeagainagain are you fasting currently?

I fast Monday to Thursday for 15:9 which I know isn't very long hours. I don't snack and just have three meals with the kids, porridge, soup and a main meal.

Friday to Sunday my hours are variable with often only one or two meals.

Then one day a month I do a 24 fast.

NatureGlimmers · 15/06/2024 10:20

Well done everyone on sticking with it. I'm still fasting too. I now do 18:6 every day with a 42 hour fast once a week. Like NewYearNewYu I do OMAD if I have a special occasion meal. The weight is creeping off extremely slowly and I still have a huge amount of weight to lose so I am resigned to it taking a couple of years to get to my goal weight. But I find it sustainable so I'm happy to keep going.
