I'm no expert but I have been doing Intermittent Fasting (IF) since September and I've lost 9kg/ a stone.

I eat breakfast at 7:30, lunch and the tea at 4. So my eating window is finished by 4:30pm. So it's a 9 hour eating window and 15 hours of fasting.

I haven't read any books about it but I do listen to podcasts about it.

I don't know anyone in real life who does IF so thought there would be a community here.

I'd like to join! I've done a bit of IF loosely but without tracking weight, just with the festive period in mind. Tomorrow I'm going to weigh myself and track it for a couple of months. I'm not overweight but would like to lose half a stone and get some abs before we try for another baby later next year! Quite good at skipping breakfast and eating a late lunch - I've done a few days (usually work in office days) where I can go all day and just eat in the evening. It feels good, so more of that! Here for tips on how to curb cravings during fasts in particular.

Talkinpeace · 31/12/2023 15:27

@colouringindoors
No snacking.
Do not buy snack foods. Do not have them in the house. NOBODY needs them.
If you have kids, get them into chunks of cheese or carrot or a hard boiled egg.
AND
Make a sign saying "Kitchen closed" and put it on the door or the fridge at the end of your eating window.

Combining 16:8 with 52 works really well.

icanlovemebetter · 31/12/2023 15:34

I'd like to join. I've done IF before 14:10 but never noted how it's going and had to breakup due to holidays etc. no more holidays in Jan-April so I'm dedicated and glad to have found this group that will keep me motivated.

grayhairdontcare · 31/12/2023 16:04

I've never done this and I'm very overweight.
I would like to join starting the 2nd .

AuntieJoyce · 31/12/2023 16:17

Joining please. Starting Wednesday (first day back in office). Will weigh myself tomorrow .have thrown out all remaining goodies today.

NewYearNewYu · 01/01/2024 00:26

I need to get rid of the junk but I don’t think I can till the dc are back at school.

CardamomBuns · 01/01/2024 08:58

Do you have tea or coffee before your eating window? Not sure I could manage to start the day without a hot drink.

NadjasNightclub · 01/01/2024 10:11

I'll join! IF has always worked well for me in the past but its so hard with all the leftover cheese and chocolate in the house. Got to the point I'm squeezing into my clothes again.

I've being doing IF more seriously for about three months now. The hardest part at first was not eating after evening meal. I found I was much more comfortable at night once that became a habit, and more refreshed in the morning. I get lots more done than I used to. I break my fast any time between 10am and 12 noon. I adjust my last food in the evening accordingly, between 6pm and 7pm.

I went off-plan for two or three days in a row before Christmas, and spent this past week feeling uncomfortable and frankly worried. I'm back on course again, and improving mentally and physically. Having a break simply doesn't work for me. I also do low carb and almost never have hunger pangs.

As an emotional overeater, the mental difference is that I procrastinate less and therefore experience less stress, and in turn don't eat junk for comfort.

SucceedingAtLosing · 01/01/2024 10:57

@CardamomBuns yes, for me a hot cup of redbush tea at 8am helps me delay breakfast. No sugar or sweetener, of course.

ellecf21 · 01/01/2024 16:06

How has everyone got on today so far? Quite pleased I managed my 16 hours on just a peppermint tea. I did have a small glass of Diet Coke at 11 (broke fast at 12.50pm) which isn't recommended but doesn't have an effect apparently so that helped! Broke fast with poached eggs and avocado on toast and looking forward to dinner! In the office tomorrow so I'll find it easier to stretch the fast.

NewYearNewYu · 01/01/2024 16:21

Not too bad today but was at a party last night where there were nibbles floating around. Think I stopped eating at 10pm and then had lunch at 1pm so still 15 hour fast.
The hard thing today is trying not to eat all the junk floating about.

You can have black tea or coffee or just hot water. Some herbal teas are ok too and I believe peppermint is fine but I'm happy to corrected.

@SucceedingAtLosing I've been doing it since September so similar time to you and I've felt physically awful eating more over christmas as'a treat'.

@ellecf21 I was finishing my last wine at 00:30 last night and felt worse for wear so ate at 10:30am today. That's the worst I've done so far in IF but I stopped eating at 1:30 today so I think I'll go for a 24 hour fast now. I aim to do one a month this year. But normally I'll be doing 15 hours fasting a day.

Kept withing hours yesterday but as predicted the cheese and chocolate found me 🤣 back at work now though so no temptations. Going to be trickier as doing later shifts the next couple of months.

MokaEfti · 02/01/2024 08:13

I would like to join in! I'm also doing dry January and I already like to eat low carb - although Christmas put paid to that!

I naturally do not want breakfast, and can go without eating til 4pm sometimes. However, I cannot have my morning coffee without double cream, plus eating quite late is something I would like to knock on the head. It's weird how even though I feel full at night I still want to snack, then by the morning that craving has gone and I don't feel like eating for hours. Perhaps I need to recalibrate something?

NewYearNewYu · 02/01/2024 10:06

I am not purposely doing dry January but I’m not drinking while I get into the flow of things as it makes me hungry. I have no will power after a drink or two. I am happy so far, managed 7:17 yesterday.

Talkinpeace · 02/01/2024 12:30

Morning all,
I've drawn my line in the sand on thread 100.
No food till supper for me today.

Nonplusultra · 02/01/2024 12:35

My window is 12 hours, sometimes 14 if I’m organised.

If you have a menstrual cycle, it’s not recommended to IF during the last week before a period as our nutritional requirements are different in each of the four cycle phases.

A lot of the information on IF is written for men, and worse body builders, so you have to sift through some of the recommendations carefully.

And be sure and drink plenty of water.

Nonplusultra · 02/01/2024 12:39

@MokaEfti double cream might be ok - I’m sure I’ve read something to that effect about longer fasts - it’s sugars and carbs that need particular avoiding most in the fasting window. So as long as the cream isn’t sweetened you should be ok

Projectme · 02/01/2024 12:44

I'm reading Gin Stephens 'Fast, Feast, Repeat'. Easy, quick reading and relatable. Have only read the first 5 or so chapters but she talks about all kinds of intermittent fasting regimes; 5:2/OMAD/16-8 etc.

Pepperypottery · 02/01/2024 14:02

I’ll join! Never tried IF before. Was thinking of doing IF and not really calorie counting but today, day 1, and I’m on MFP. Anyway, aiming for 15:9 ish and if I can get to 16:8 some days.

I would have said I’m not great without breakfast so going to try 10/11am to 7pm. Anyone who needs food in the morning have any experience of this kind of timetable? Or do I just think I need food in the morning?!

moderationincludingmoderation · 02/01/2024 14:11

I've been doing 16:8 for about 5 years on and off.. in the beginning it worked so well for weight loss.

But I have more or less stopped now as I noticed in the last year that I reached a plateau and it was no longer effective weight loss wise, and As I've entered Peri Menopause, I have understood that at certain points in my cycle, I cant fast in the same way as I could. I get weak and my blood sugar drops in a way it didnt before.

I did lots and lots of reading and found that
A) you can plateau so its important to mix up your fast 'style' eventually
B) if you're a woman over 40, it may not best for you or you may need to make some adjustments in relation to your cycles

Good luck to you all, i truly believe it's a great tool for most and has so many benefits
