Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

hello, signing in for Tues!

SydneyCarton · 07/06/2022 06:52

Thanks @incognitodorrito and @TheWayTheLightFalls 😃 Birthday fish and chips and champagne was delicious, and I am now gearing up for my b2b. Aiming for two minis to get me started but will try to keep it lower if I can. Good luck to everyone fasting today 👍🏻

incognitodorrito · 07/06/2022 09:54

That birthday dinner sounds lish @SydneyCarton Signing in for today.

incognitodorrito · 07/06/2022 17:54

Closing here at 685 cals, an early night beckons … !

SydneyCarton · 07/06/2022 21:35

Day 1 is done, kitchen closed at 612. Water and black coffee for most of the day (I’m really not a black coffee fan but it does curb the hunger), then a chicken wrap with salad and garlic sauce, a few radishes and an apple. Also what seemed like a very miserly piece of birthday cake but which was actually the recommended portion size 😬

Found it surprisingly easy to get back into the fasting groove and I feel pleasantly full but not stuffed. Will see if I still feel like that tomorrow morning for day 2 of my b2b 🤣

LoisLane23 · 07/06/2022 22:21

Does everyone generally try to stick
To 500? I see a lot of 600-700 here! Is that just accidental? Or is it a different method?

absolutelyknackeredcow · 07/06/2022 22:21

Evening all,
Sounds like some lovely fasts here - well done.
I did a fast on Friday and watched what I ate on sat/ sun/ mon and today and I'm back to target weight after the holiday pile on.
Might do one on Friday to make sure Smile

A B2B fast, fasting on two consecutive days, allows you to increase your daily calorie intake to 650 cals.

harriethoyle · 08/06/2022 08:33

Well done @incognitodorrito and @absolutelyknackeredcow ! I'm starting the holiday weight fight back today so I'm with you on a FD @SydneyCarton - we've just got a new coffee machine so that will keep me going until lunch...!!

KylieKoKo · 08/06/2022 10:42

I am also fasting today.

harriethoyle · 08/06/2022 20:58

Kitchen closed here on 609. @KylieKoKo @SydneyCarton how did you both get on?

Anyone joining me in a Thursday FD?

SydneyCarton · 08/06/2022 21:22

Hi @harriethoyle , good thanks, kitchen closed on 688 so exactly 1300 for the b2b. Didn’t manage to stick to the no junk rule but birthday cake needs to be eaten! Looking forward to a more substantial meal tomorrow; my TDEE is around 1800 which should be pretty manageable. Good luck for FD 2!

harriethoyle · 08/06/2022 21:50

How satisfying to hit exactly 1300 @SydneyCarton ! Good work 🙌

KylieKoKo · 08/06/2022 21:54

I've had 514 so far but I think I'll need something else or I won't be able to sleep. I might treat myself to 50 calories worth of cottage cheese.

harriethoyle · 08/06/2022 22:18

I often struggle to get to sleep on FDs @KylieKoKo - and it gets worse with each one in a row... might have to reconsider Friday's 3rd in a row if I struggle tonight and tomorrow...

I was supposed to fast today but got a call from the hospital to come in tomorrow to see the Dr. Had a mole removed 2 weeks ago so I have to assume the biopsy didn't give the result I was expecting hoping for. I didn't fancy the fast after that, did have in the back of my mind that having cancer may be the first weight loss tool to be effective for me ... (hope I haven't offended anyone, I do have a fairly black sense of humour).

I'll await tomorrow's news and hopefully be back on a FD on Monday.

EatYourFive · 09/06/2022 09:55

Oh no sorry to hear that @CheshireSplat, I hope it's nothing serious. I'll keep my fingers crossed for some positive news.

I got back home from a work trip late last night, feeling tired and headachey but will try and do at least one FD, feeling very bloated. Anyone else fasting today?

harriethoyle · 09/06/2022 10:29

Really sorry to hear that @CheshireSplat - everything crossed for better news than you're expecting. Keep us posted 🤞🤞

I'm fasting @EatYourFive - very rumbly tummy already but a busy morning so should make it through to lunch without snaccidents!

I’m with you today @harriethoyle …back late after a half term holiday, but raring to get back into it. (I bought new lacy knickers and jeans in a smaller size before I left and was SOOO happy)

KylieKoKo · 09/06/2022 11:04

So sorry to hear that @CheshireSplat.

KylieKoKo · 09/06/2022 11:05

I was 2 pounds down this morning which I am particularly pleased with as my period is due today.

SydneyCarton · 09/06/2022 11:12

Hope it all goes OK @CheshireSplat Flowers

sweetgingercat · 09/06/2022 13:31

Good luck @CheshireSplat 💐
