Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

I'm back from my all inclusive and wait for it, put on 9lbs in a week which I think is a new record!!!!
I actually am a bit shocked - we had a lovely time but was quite active so didn't think it would be that high.
I'm on a FD today and hoping some of the bloat will go...
I have also set my perfect weight at 11 stone 3 - so actually only 6lbs to lose. I think I have to be realistic that at 6ft anything under 11 stone is massively unrealistic to do for more than a big event.

It's my first weight day. I've been eating 1700 calories per day and on fasting days 500 calories. I've lost 6lb! I am over the moon as that includes a night out. I've done slimming world for years but it just encouraged me to eat as many carbs as possible and every group felt like a session on how you can eat more... like 'oh we've found this low fat cheese you can have more of' etc after reading Michael Mosleys book i just feel more educated about food and the effects on my body it's made dieting easier I think. Anyway just wanted to share my early success. Fingers crossed I can keep it up. Aiming for 1lb a week until Christmas.

I'm feeling really despondent tonight. Didn't do my FD on Wednesday because my whole family was together for the first time in about 18 months and we unexpectedly went out for lunch. Went out for curry on Thursday night. Friday night takeaway fish and chips were on the menu but I said no please, can we cook. So we did fajitas which was much better. But 4 days of staying with relatives with a very well-stocked fridge has led to snacking on pringles, amazing cheese, pork pies and having had quite a stressful day today I had a secret eater style wrap from the petrol station only about an hour before our meal. My trousers are tight, my belly which was looking better after losing 5 lbs in 3 weeks is back and I am so hacked off. Will try to be good tomorrow then a FD on Monday. Feel like giving up!! It's so hard to stay on the straight and narrow....

If anyone has read this far please cheer me up with some motivational words....

Signing in for a Sunday FD. Off to work later so that will hopefully keep me busy. Baked beans, eggs and broccoli to eat, and likely a stir fry. I’m still loving shirataki noodles.

@CheshireSplat every day is a new day. I actually find it useful sometimes to have a break and just enjoy food - it becomes easier to stay on track that way, imo.

Greetings from an airport lounge my friends! Travelling home from hols, flight is delayed and we're going to miss our connection. Curses! Next flight home will be tomorrow morning 😭 still determined to fast tomorrow, weds and Thursday to get my holiday weight off asap. But dear God pizza is amazing and a daily aperol spritz good for the soul! 😂

Gah, harriet. This was us too with flights. Sympathies and hope you’re home soon. I ended up fasting while hanging around a Greek airport Confused because it was 3pm by the time the flight was definitely properly cancelled. Novel but fine. Definitely didn’t fast the next day!

Evening, after 4 years of being good and oh so slowly loosing weight through diet and exercise, I've just lost the plot the last 8 months. So I'm making a commitment to take back control. I've exercised throughout but it's the food discipline that has got me. I'm also mid40s and it seems that suddenly my tummy has exploded, all the weight is going on there.
So it's less HIIT more weights and fasting to kick start those changes. I really need some breakfast inspiration, I tend to have something post training, as late as possible so around 11. I used to have eggs but don't seem able to stomach them any more. Any suggestions for a veggie at under 150 calories???

I'd 3 non-fast days this weekend, and have really overeaten. Had a work thing so couldn't really do a fast, but didn't need to go so far the other way! Somehow I need to fit in 3 fasts before the weekend - it's a big problem that you can't realistically run two fast days together!

Why can't you run two together @Badlifeday ? Lots of us back to back - you get 1300 cals across 2 days which makes it a bit easier and helps with fitting FDs in...

Oh that's an idea, thank you. I've been fasting on no calories (my whole problem is not being able to stop!) so I was thinking I could manage over 48 hours with nothing, I could time a couple of meals couldn't I? Hope everyone has a good day. I'm no eating today and already feel better than I did yesterday when I could (and did) eat what I want. Makes you wonder why I overeat if it doesn't make me happy!

Good Morning - also joining back again after a week and a bit of all inclusive. Gained five pounds by day drinking any eating ice cream every day (yum but went to gym yesterday and defo look very bloated). Back on B2B today & tomorrow. Good luck fellow fasters !

Morning to all the Monday fasters, I guess there will be a few of us after half term/the long weekend.

Thanks to those of you who held my hand on Saturday night. I was fairly good yesterday and weighed in this morning at the same weight as Monday last week, so I'm happy with that after what felt like a bingey week with just one FD.

FD for me today and I'm starving!!!! On a long train to London with a massive coffee for company. Will feel nice and slim tomorrow (when we have an away day with work with pastries, 3 course lunch etc.) May do 3 FDs this week!!!!

Rejoining these threads after a couple of years away - I was on them when BigChoc was around, about six months before Covid hit. I used to fast on the days I was in the office, as I found it much easier with no food around, but two years of WFH has meant I have fallen off the 5:2 wagon. I have been trying 16:8 but I think I need something a bit more drastic as I get further into my 40s, plus we are now returning to the office so it will hopefully be easier.

I'm going to try for a b2b Tuesday and Wednesday, which are my office days this week, and I think I will aim for two mini FDs to get started as I've never done a b2b before. No calorie counting today as it's my birthday 😀although went out for a meal yesterday afternoon and have not broken my fast yet, so if I can keep going until 11-ish that'll do me. I have found in the past on 5:2 that I do need to count calories on NFDs as well, it was only when I started doing that that I actually saw any results.

I am fasting today. I ate so much this weekend as I had various events and my period is due to not expecting to lose much this week but hopefully my fast days will mean I don't gain.
