Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Well done @KylieKoKo !

Good news, thanks everyone. It was cancerous but caught early and they don't think it has spread. Need a bigger bit of my arm lopped off to check (by a plastic surgeon as it's a fairly big area in an exposed place, so I'll see if I can get anything else done while I'm there....😁).

So no excuse now.... I'll do a FD tomorrow. Might try to take this as the kick up the arse to live the best life I can and be as fit as I can. Pretend it's like Sliding Doors and in a parallel life I have had bad news, so should make the most of this one.

Good luck to everyone on a FD today.

EatYourFive · 09/06/2022 14:24

Oh gosh @CheshireSplat that sounds scary! Glad to hear it was caught early but still very frightening. Was the mole itself very suspicious looking?
I'm impressed you still plan to go ahead with a FD tomorrow!

harriethoyle · 09/06/2022 15:32

I'm really pleased @CheshireSplat that must be a great relief. As a moley little beast, that reminds me to be vigilant in checking them. Hopefully big area won't be painful x

It had grown quite significantly in the last 6-12 months, maybe by 30-50%.

DH had told me to go to the Dr but I was always too busy..... Then on a very hot Easter Saturday my friend saw my bare arm. She is a dermatologist and told me (gently) to get it checked. So I did. DH now can say for the rest of his life that I should listen to him 😁. I listened to my friend of course. The nurse actually praised me for speaking to the GP; I bet so many people think vaguely about going and never do. And regret it.

You should look out for A, B, C, D, E. www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/melanoma/symptoms

Sorry to derail, back to 5:2....

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/06/2022 17:23

Sending love @CheshireSplat
I was supposed to fast tomorrow but haven't been well today with an upset tum so have had to fast today
Hopefully will pass soon

harriethoyle · 09/06/2022 18:26

Kitchen closed here on 589. Supposed to be fasting tomorrow but we'll see... I find 3 in a row really difficult! Might go for a mini or IF day instead. We'll see!

That's really useful to hear thanks @CheshireSplat

That's very good to know @CheshireSplat, so pleased you had it checked.

Kitchen closed at 250 today. Undecided about fasting tomorrow, will see how it goes.

harriethoyle · 09/06/2022 20:49

That's so low @EatYourFive ! What did you eat?!

OP posts:
sweetgingercat · 09/06/2022 21:56

Kitchen closed at 420 here. I haven’t been feeling very well today, so it wasn’t really difficult. It seems there might be a few people fasting tomorrow, if so, I’ll join you!

@CheshireSplat glad the news is better than you feared. I hope your day wasn’t too stressful.

harriethoyle · 10/06/2022 07:34

1.8kg of holiday weight off this week which puts me 1.2kg above the target I reached pre hols... am going to see if I can push through to lunchtime today with lots of coffee and do a mini today rather than a full fast to try and get a fraction more off! Am on my own tonight so won't be drinking so I might as well capitalise on that...

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 10/06/2022 07:37

@harriethoyle most calories came from milky coffee, had one apple and a miso soup for lunch and then nothing but sparkling water. Felt really shattered and bloated yesterday and had no appetite. Lost 1.5 kg overnight but not yet back to last week's record low weight but wasn't expecting it either.
Don't think I will fast today though, have another work trip on Monday and lots to prepare, need some energy. Back to proper regular fasting after next week.

EatYourFive · 10/06/2022 07:41

Well done @harriethoyle that's a good result! I will have some wine tonight, just a glass, my husband doesn't drink so I am used to drinking on my own! 😁

Badlifeday · 10/06/2022 08:06

I had to cut short a fast yesterday as I was feeling so bad - think might be coming on with something, also very stressful work day - so I'm not too happy about that but think it was probably the right thing to do.

harriethoyle · 10/06/2022 08:06

@EatYourFive you're not on your own if your husband's in... I just think it's a slippery slope when I'm claiming the dogs as drinking companions in lieu of humans! 😂🙈

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 10/06/2022 08:09

@Badlifeday just think of it as a reduced calorie day and a deferred fast rather than a failure. You can fast next week!

OP posts:
Badlifeday · 10/06/2022 08:32

Yikes, I don't know if it's the fasting or the eating, but I've just had a toilet emergency and had to rush home from dropping off the kids to make it to the loo!
I suppose my digestive system doesn't know what's going on.Grin

harriethoyle · 10/06/2022 09:22

I think it's unlikely that would be fasting @Badlifeday - more likely something you ate or the bug you thought you might be coming down with making its appearance! Feel better soon

sweetgingercat · 10/06/2022 11:43

hi all, doing an impromptu b2b today. I was only going to do a one day fast but you all inspired me yesterday, so thank you!

Good weight loss @harriethoyle! well done!

harriethoyle · 10/06/2022 12:44

Thanks @sweetgingercat - I was aiming for a third b2b today but I felt so hangry and shaky at 10.45 I had to have a hot cross bun! I've stuck to planned fast lunch and have tea ready so hopefully I'll come in under 1000 cals regardless of failed FD. 3 in a row is HARD!

OP posts:
CheshireSplat · 10/06/2022 20:08

I've done a kind of FD today. As I've said before, Friday nights are usually a pig out in our house. DH cooks up a storm but he's out tonight, so I've taken advantage. Whilst the cats away etc. How rock'n'roll!!!

I was aiming for a proper FD but have been a bit lax (wine) so am going to have 1,000 calories. Whilst it's not 500 it probably is 1,500 less than usual so should have the same weight loss effect. And I'd only had 295 calories before 7pm so a similar fasting-ish effect maybe clutching at straws .

Have a great weekend everyone.

sweetgingercat · 11/06/2022 00:09

I've never done a b3b @harriethoyle , so kudos to you for aiming for it. I used to get shaky when I first started b2b-ing and found drinking hot water with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt helped me.

Same @CheshireSplat my other half has covid at the moment so is spending most of his time in segregation upstairs which was a perfect time for an impromptu FD!

KylieKoKo · 11/06/2022 14:45

I can't imagine doing 3 fast days in a row! I try to avoid back to backs unless I have to do one.

@CheshireSplat I'm glad the news was better than you feared.

@Badlifeday I have a touch of IBS and sometimes it's triggered if I don't eat all day then have my fast day meal.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/06/2022 05:22

Signing in <yawn>.

Glad to hear that things are better than you’d feared cheshire Flowers

harriethoyle · 12/06/2022 09:16

Morning all. Does anyone here IF? I saw a friend last week who has lost 2.5 stone IF and she looks AMAZING. Was wondering about combining it with 5:2 and IFing on non FDs apart from the day after fasts...
