Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Hi @Cactuslove . That doesn't sound too bad. I often am around 600 on a FD and they do get easier. Well done! What's brought you here?

Poor you@TheWayTheLightFalls . I don't envy you, I'm out of the other side, mine are 7 and 10 (but the 10 year old often goes to bed later than me so I've lost my relaxing evenings).

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/05/2022 11:48

Welcome cactus! I don’t think there’s any harm in starting with / sticking to a higher figure than 500cals, if it makes it more sustainable for you.

KylieKoKo · 29/05/2022 23:26

I'm absolutely dreading fasting tomorrow. I'm not sure why apart from maybe I haven't been able to get to the shops today so I have no low calorie food in.

CheshireSplat · 30/05/2022 07:23

@KylieKoKo do you have eggs? I've had booked eggs and raw carrots for lunch and omlette for tea before!

FD for me today. On an early train for 2 days away with work and slept so badly that it'll be hard but a scale victory this morning, I have lost 5 lbs in 3 weeks so need to keep my eyes on the prize!

EatYourFive · 30/05/2022 07:23

Good morning, checking in for Day 1 b2b, although not feeling overly confident this morning, seem to have woken up with a stomach ache. Will see how the day goes.
Who's with me today?

KylieKoKo · 30/05/2022 11:21

I do and miso soup and oranges! I will see what I can cobble together

KylieKoKo · 30/05/2022 11:22

@EatYourFive if you are feeling ill and feel like your body wants to eat then you should

Beautiful3 · 30/05/2022 17:58

Only managed one fast day last week. I've realised that I'm an emotional eater. I felt stressed last week, so only managed one day. However this week will be better. Kitchen closed at 500 bang on. Well done Monday fasters.

EatYourFive · 30/05/2022 19:47

I didn't feel like eating much today because of stomach ache so kitchen closing at 343. Well done @Beautiful3! How did you get on @KylieKoKo ?
Hoping to have another fast day tomorow as will have to travel for work over the next two weeks and I can't fast when on a work trip (it's usually very hectic but also because all food and wine is paid for making it irresistible!).

CheshireSplat · 30/05/2022 21:21

Well done fasters today, good numbers!

I'm am closing the kitchen at 699. It's a lot higher than I would have wanted but I've resisted all type of temptation, including my new boss buying me an iced m&s donut/ yum yum thing. I thanked him graciously and quickly wrapped it up and put it in my bag for tomorrow! It's all been very healthy food too.

Beautiful3 · 31/05/2022 00:17

Oh no @EatYourFive I'm sorry to hear you're ill. I do hope you feel alot better by the.morning. Lots of hot.drinks.for you.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/05/2022 06:38

Signing in for Tues. Anyone with me?

EatYourFive · 31/05/2022 06:56

Good morning @TheWayTheLightFalls, I'm in! Feeling better today and as i didn't have any appetite yesterday have more calories to play with today. Good luck!

CheshireSplat · 31/05/2022 12:04

I'm finding that I need to be really careful with what I eat the day after a FD. This is new for me and didn't happen a couple of years ago. A rich breakfast (eg butter croissant) left me in agony on Saturday and I've had a really upset stomach this morning after a bigger than normal breakfast. Does anyone else have similar? It'll all help with the weight loss! I normally have a cast iron stomach.

EatYourFive · 31/05/2022 13:57

@CheshireSplat I often get issues with my stomach in general so don't think it's necessarily linked to fasting, but I try not to overdo the morning after a FD, especially after b2b, or I might get an upset stomach.

Beautiful3 · 31/05/2022 15:32

@CheshireSplat Do you think eating something light like fruit or weetabix, might be better for your tummy. You can have the croissant mid morning? Second fast completed today, Kitchen closed at 535.

KylieKoKo · 31/05/2022 15:54

I ate 524 calories yesterday. I'm going out for dinner tonight and will be fasting again tomorrow. I'm going to have prawn and veg spicy soup for my main meal.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/05/2022 16:23

cheshire if I have anything carby/sugary after a FD I feel awful. I think I’m just more sensitive to it. Wonder if it’s similar for you.

CheshireSplat · 01/06/2022 07:28

Thanks everyone. Yes, something small and light the day after a FD is definitely the way to go. Annoyingly, I didn't even want the croissant (not worth the calories in my book) but DH had bought us one each for the weekend. So it was a "no thank you, oh actually go on then" situation and then I was in so much pain!!!

FD for me, but we are away with family, I haven't planned anything so I think it'll be a case of no breakfast or lunch and then trying to pick the healthiest bits from tea. So may not count calories today.

Anyone else fasting today? It's often a quiet one as so many people do b2b Monday and Tuesday.

EatYourFive · 01/06/2022 08:13

Think this week is extra quiet because of half-term and indeed Monday and Tuesday seem like the most popular days to be fasting. I'm not fasting today, just finished a b2b session. Good luck today anyway @CheshireSplat.

Successful fast week for me this week, down 0.6 kg from one week ago. At 60.3 kg I'm now tantalisingly close to the magical 60 kg limit but annoyingly the next two weeks will be messed up by two work trips so it will take a while longer to get there.

KylieKoKo · 01/06/2022 10:38

I am meant to be fasting today but I am currently 50/50 as I drank too much at a birthday celebration and I feel like I need carbs.

KylieKoKo · 01/06/2022 11:10

I have had a word with myself and a strong coffee and I will be staying strong and fasting. I would love a burrito though!

Beautiful3 · 01/06/2022 16:51

Third fast day completed today. Kitchen closed at 540. Looking forward to tomorrow!

Badlifeday · 02/06/2022 16:00

Hello, is it ok to join in? Nice to see so many people getting a lot out of this style of eating, it is encouraging. I've been trying fasting for two weeks now, on a fast day today. I'm not personally taking any calories on the fast days because I find that harder than knowing I can't have anything.
I've noticed on the non-fast day my tastes seem to be changing a little - I want slightly better food basically, and am going off my Diet Coke habit a lot!

Beautiful3 · 03/06/2022 11:48

@Badlifeday Welcome! I'm not fasting for the next few days, as I normally do Monday-Thursday (3 days out of those). Some hard core fasters, do it over the weekend. So you'll always have someone on here, doing the same days as you.
