Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Hungry but made it 🙌🏼

Looking forward to breakfast tomorrow 😍

EatYourFive · 02/09/2022 21:55

Well done @mumlikeaboss! I have never managed a Friday or weekend fast. Enjoy you breakfast tomorrow!

mumlikeaboss · 02/09/2022 22:06

@EatYourFive I guess when you're a SAHM Fridays don't feel much different to any other weekday, lol

Won't catch me doing a Saturday or Sunday fast though... 😋

Badlifeday · 02/09/2022 22:17

I made everyone dinner tonight but drew the line at dishing up the cookie dough ice cream, dh can do that! Hope they've left some for me tomorrow Grin
if the scales haven't moved tomorrow I am submitting a formal complaint

mumlikeaboss · 03/09/2022 10:29

@Badlifeday did you brave the scales? Hope your efforts yesterday were rewarded!

I just got on mine and am AMAZED to find I'm only 1.5lbs higher than my lovely low weight at the beginning of the holidays!!!!

Am truly amazed. Have missed several fast days and done some fairly sketchy long eating windows full of junk. Weight loss is a WEIRD process, never does what you think it's going to!

Anyway, here's hoping for a good week next week so I can dip under my lowest low and move past this MONTHS-long plateau... 🤞🏻

Badlifeday · 03/09/2022 10:35

Well done! It's nice not to feel you've lost the results of your good work!
my scales have shifted 2 lbs (so that's 2lb in a week) so I am happy to see that. I'm still very overweight though so I need fairly regularly, significant loses to reach my goal of improved health. I'm at almost a 2 stone loss now, only another 3 (!) to go!
Really looking forward to my food today though Smile

mumlikeaboss · 03/09/2022 11:28

@Badlifeday oh well done, 2lbs is excellent.

I still have around 3.5 stone to lose if I want to be a healthy BMI... And that would be the very top end of the range 😬 but to be honest I'm just seeing where I end up.

I've been faffing around with the same 10lbs for nearly a year now, so have half given up on getting back down to my happy/slim weight... BUT I'm about 6 stone down from my heaviest (4 of that lost with fasting) so I'm extremely grateful to be where I am now!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 04/09/2022 05:52

Signing in!

Well done @Badlifeday

Badlifeday · 04/09/2022 10:07

That is an amazing achievement @mumlikeaboss you should be very proud

absolutelyknackeredcow · 04/09/2022 14:47

Well done @mumlikeaboss - massive achievement!
I'm on a b2b today. Day 1 going ok despite being shattered. I have PT tomorrow so going to up to 800 but should still be a reasonable fast

incognitodorrito · 05/09/2022 06:08

Back on IF after Summer hols. Thankfully I was able to fit into all my old summer clothes due to IF and gym but have gained around 4 kilos all on my tummy (14 nights of all inclusive were fun but didn’t help !) and my eating has became a bit mindless, so looking forward to a reset. First day back will be a tough one though, who else is fasting ?

EatYourFive · 05/09/2022 07:20

I'm signing in for today! Just one day now and will do a B2B later in the week.
Welcome back @incognitodorrito! Two weeks all inclusive sounds wonderful! I'm still working on my holiday weight gain, one week in and 2 kg remains. Not too worried though as it seems to be coming off, have even lost an extra 0.4 kg (everything counts!) since Friday morning even though I wasn't fasting or counting calories over the weekend and did have ice cream and wine and all sorts. Hopefully that's a sign that my fairly brutal fast last week kickstarted things.

Good luck today everyone!

mumlikeaboss · 05/09/2022 09:10

I'm in today... I think... Had a couple of rough nights and I'm super tired 😩 so not sure if I'll make it all day. Debating whether to make this week 5:2 instead of 4:3, but on the other hand I'm really hoping I'll see a new low on the scales if I manage 3 fasts...

Decisions, decisions!!

Good luck to all fasting, I'll hang in there as long as I can!

incognitodorrito · 05/09/2022 11:44

Thank you @EatYourFive ! @mumlikeaboss how many cals do you total each FD when doing 3 days out of interest ? Don’t know if I have the willpower for 3 but would be a good way to kickstart my restart !

absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/09/2022 12:27

@incognitodorrito I do 600 when I do 3 FDs

mumlikeaboss · 05/09/2022 12:28

@incognitodorrito I do zero-calorie fasts because once I start eating I don't usually have the willpower to stop 🙈🤣

So I aim for Monday / Wednesday / Friday on just black coffee, water, herbal teas.

I don't manage all 3 every week, or certainly haven't during the holidays 🙄🙄

absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/09/2022 15:38

Urgh doing PT is not ideal on a second day of a fast day. Had to have an emergency cup of tea to make it through
How's everyone else doing.

mumlikeaboss · 05/09/2022 16:20

I'm just exhausted today!! I usually get a kick of energy on fast days but not today 😴 so I'm having a snack, after a 22-hour fast... No point in forcing a fast if it's not making me feel good.

Will have dinner with the family in a couple of hours, so nice short eating window, and have another crack at a fast day tomorrow or Wednesday.

incognitodorrito · 05/09/2022 16:52

I just can’t entertain a no cal fast day and have 89 cals left from 600 for the day 🙈. Going to the gym after work today to get back into the swing of things.

EatYourFive · 05/09/2022 17:21

I do 500 a day for single fasts and 600 on B2B days, although I tend to save some calories for the 2nd day.
I have once again wasted lots of calories on coffee (with milk and sugar 🙄) so have got 250 left for dinner.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 05/09/2022 19:52

Kitchen closed on day 2 of b2b on 717. I have done 20k steps and an hour of PT.
Takes me to about 630 / day

incognitodorrito · 05/09/2022 19:59

Well done everyone. I skipped the gym and did a walk round the park with dog instead. Closing at 600-ish and off to bed.

sweetgingercat · 06/09/2022 23:33

Hi all,

My DC has gone back to school this week and I finished my first B2B tonight for what seems like ages! The summer holiday feels like it's been a bit of a disaster, although I have managed to fast here and there, and did a lot of exercise too, so it's not all been a waste of time. Glad to be back here though, looking forward to fasting with the rest of you and losing some of our unwanted weight!

SydneyCarton · 07/09/2022 06:58

Managed a FD yesterday at 579. Might not manage another one this week but trying to stick to TDEE calories and get some runs in, routine is a bit out of whack at the moment because youngest is only doing half days for the next two weeks so there are two school pick up times to sort out, some activities start this week and others next week so we’re not properly in the term time groove yet!

Good luck to today’s fasters!

EatYourFive · 07/09/2022 07:40

Good morning, signing up for Day 1 B2B. Anyone else fasting today?
