Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Morning morning, back down to a kilo above goal so let's see if 3fd tomorrow shaves a bit more of that off...

In other news, having swapped to supermarket own bread for economising, I've been on hovis this week (75% off) and it's SO NICE. I think it's going to be my mini treat...

Great news @harriethoyle . I got a great drop and back to target weight. I'm going to do a Friday fast to make sure though

mumlikeaboss · 24/08/2022 22:46

@harriethoyle that's excellent 🤗

I got to 20 hours today and then had a 2-hour eating window but with a pretty lavish meal and dessert 🙈

Got another social dinner tomorrow, so will aim for the same sort of thing - 22-ish hour fast then a nice short window without restricting what I eat. About the best I can do in the circs, I think!

Unlikely to get any 36-hour fasts done until later next week, we've got so much going on at the moment 🙄

mumlikeaboss · 24/08/2022 22:47

Ooh and well done @absolutelyknackeredcow on getting back to target 🤩

harriethoyle · 25/08/2022 06:47

Morning gang - anyone with me? FD3...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 26/08/2022 09:29

How did it go @harriethoyle ?
I'm doing one today to deal with the weekend which is just one long eat fest.

harriethoyle · 26/08/2022 09:56

I might have fallen face first into a bottle of malbec @absolutelyknackeredcow . MIGHT.

Hahahah
At least it was good wine

absolutelyknackeredcow · 26/08/2022 19:18

Kitchen closed on 539. Not bad for a very active third FD

Having a great bank holiday….so much food n fizz! My first fast back I only managed one fast. Planning on 2 FD next week Tuesday/Thursday and weigh in Friday so see what the summer damage has done…I have wrote it now so I must stick to it…right?!!enjoy the rest of the weekend x

Badlifeday · 28/08/2022 22:43

Can I ask a question? I've noticed recently that I'm feeling far more focused than normal. I'm "getting stuff done" rather than just thinking about it and worrying about it. My mind feels clearer than normal.
I don't know if this could be a product of the fasting, or of losing (some) weight, or something else entirely? It seems to have happened particularly since I had covid, would be a very interesting side effect if so!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2022 06:01

I have this sometimes during or (more usually) after a FD. I’m sure it’s been discussed, can’t remember (clearly not experiencing it this morning Grin ).

Anyone fasting on the bank hol? I’m not today.

mumlikeaboss · 29/08/2022 09:45

@Badlifeday I definitely feel like that on fast days - isn't it something to do with your brain running on ketones rather than on glucose? 🤔 I've definitely heard/read about the "ketone clarity".

It could also be partly just because your body isn't directing energy to digesting food all day, which means it can send more energy to other things, like thinking :)

mumlikeaboss · 29/08/2022 09:48

@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm fasting today 🙋🏼‍♀️

Might seem a bit mad on a bank holiday but we've had a social weekend (with a LOT of eating 😱) and by contrast we've just got a quiet day planned today - packing up and travelling home, maybe going for a walk somewhere en route. Should be fairly easy to fast, and my digestive system is crying out for a rest, lol!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2022 11:02

Good luck @mumlikeaboss !

EatYourFive · 29/08/2022 11:24

Hello everyone, hope you have had a good couple of weeks and have managed to shed some pounds.
I'm back from a two week holiday that included and lot of good food and plenty of wine and have managed to gain some 3 kg.. 😔Will be joining you here on Wednesday for my first post-holiday fast.

mumlikeaboss · 29/08/2022 18:12

@TheWayTheLightFalls I made it to 4pm and found myself buying Cinnabons on the way home... I've eaten two, and they're about 900 calories a pop 😳😳😳😂

Did so well the first half of these holidays, but the last week or so I just need my mouth wired shut 😱

TheWayTheLightFalls · 29/08/2022 18:54

Ha @mumlikeaboss ! Yes, the holidays have tested my resolve too. Inevitably when I’m at work it’s relatively plain sailing, but my + kids at home… urgh.

harriethoyle · 30/08/2022 09:24

Morning all, anyone else fasting today? I'm on for day one of a b2b 😊

absolutelyknackeredcow · 30/08/2022 09:34

Joining you @harriethoyle
I have a surprise TOTM and ate heavily over the weekend so not looking forward to it to be honest

harriethoyle · 30/08/2022 20:53

Really odd evening with an urgent work call at 6pm as I stepped off the train. Literally bounced straight into crisis mode and just finished... had an emergency piece of bread and butter at 7pm because I was shaky with hunger! Kitchen closing on 839, I will try and claw back some calories tomorrow 😬

EatYourFive · 31/08/2022 07:59

Here for my first post-holiday fast and feeling hungry already. Planning a B2B but it will no doubt be more challenging than usual.

mumlikeaboss · 31/08/2022 09:13

Signing in.

I keep starting a fast and aborting it later in the day 🙈 so I MUST make this one happen!!

Someone give me a virtual kick in the pants!

ShrinkingVioIet · 31/08/2022 10:30

mumlikeaboss what is it that leads to aborting your FDs? Are you able to re-arrange your day at all to avoid the danger time?

My weight loss is going as depressingly slow as MFP suggested it would although I think I can see the beginnings of an indent where my waist should be when i'm forced to look in the gym mirrors. Small wins.
