Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Done! I really liked my lunch today - miso soup with zero calorie noodles and a boiled egg, with grilled tomatoes and garlic broccoli on the side. Tuna salad for dinner with lemon juice and salt. Just over 500 cals all in.

I massively fell off the wagon after my failure to lose anything last week. Lots and lots of eating 🙃.
I am back for a b2b today and hoping I can lose something more Than 100g.

I'm signing in for a 36-hour 🙋🏼‍♀️

Gained 2lbs on my Saturday weigh-in 🙄 but twas expected...

Saturday stuck to just one meal at midday, so happy with that. But yesterday I probably ate about 4000 calories 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ Went out for a huge meal with friends and also had TOTM carb cravings so tonnes of toast for breakfast and tea... 😬

Feel like CRAP when I eat bread so I'm swearing off it yet again!

Tomorrow will be an "up" day after today's full fast, then Wednesday will have to be OMAD because we have people in for dinner... Hopefully get in a full fast on Thursday then the weekend will be up in the air because we're going away yet again. 😏

So ready for holidays to be over now!!!

First day back at work (WFH) so holidays and indulgences are now over 😕I haven't fasted or tracked calories for the last 2.5 weeks, and we had a LOT of meals involving chips (some consisting only of chips, in fact, to the DC's absolute delight). I have drunk more alcohol than I usually would, but not in itself a huge amount, and we did do a lot of walking and swimming most days, so although I have almost certainly put some weight on, I don't think it's a huge amount.

NFD with tracked calories today, then a B2B Tuesday and Wednesday when I'm in the office. I don't think I'll weigh in for a couple of weeks so as not to have too much of a shock when I finally step on the scales!

Hi guys

I would like to join. I am an experienced faster following a daily window but I’ve got in bad habits, over eating and opening my window with a cheeky gin or 2! These school holidays are a lot. I’m doing a fast day today and it’s going well, probably cause it’s the first one for a while, things might be different on a cold dey in November. Got an M&S ready meal for tonight, few tonics and low cal hot chocolate planned, coming in around 500 cals. Another fd planned for wed. From September I’ve promised to make fast meals from scratch but for now I’m saving all my energy not murdering the kids and drinking vodka for breakfast. Push on through people! X

If I make it through the holidays with the kids alive and the house still standing, it's a win! 😁

I've managed a fast day today, woohoo, just got a couple of hours and I can legit retire to bed. Haven't eaten anything except a tiny mouthful of a couple of salads I was making to take on a picnic tomorrow - had to check they tasted okay!!

Thanks guys, feeling very welcome. @TheWayTheLightFalls Yes about a 100 years 🤣@mumlikeaboss well done on your fast day and the prep skills..mumming like a boss indeed! I finished on 432 my meal was dead filling. Just having a decaf coffee and a Cadbury’s chocolate finger (27 cals each ) also I turned down a glass of wine from my hubby now that is a first! I've been managing every other day for a while now, but I'll be flexible if I have to drop a day. Sustainability is what it's all about for me! I went for a sauna this morning and am currently trying to drink enough water to make up for it - maybe not ideal on a fast day!

Supposed to be day 1 of a b2b today but plans have changed as I'm not going into the office - today will be 16:8 instead as I want to try and go for a run later and I need some fuel! Been fasting since 9-ish last night so ready to break it with an omelette and salad. B2B will be Wednesday/Thursday instead when I'm in work

@Badlifeday well done on ADF-ing 👏🏻 I haven't yet managed to make a whole day's fast happen on a weekend!!

Just started a 21-hour fast as I can't do a full day tomorrow but will have nothing before dinner... Will try and keep to a circumspect plateful of food but refuse to calorie-count and I don't cook low fat lol so it'll probably be 1000-ish rather than 500. I'm fine with that on an OMAD.

I think it's really impressive to be able to stop at 500 calories. For me I really am an all-or-nothing kind of person! I've just made up a wee chart where I can record each pound I manage to lose, it is satisfying to colour in the spaces! Many more to go sadly.

Yes I'm completely the same, hence I do a complete fast on my down days - I find it far easier to eat nothing for 36 hours than have 500 cals and then stop 🙈😆
