Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

checking in for today - I ate and drank a lot over the weekend so need to fix that - I wish I had some scales. But anyway - I have more socialising and eating coming up this week so I HAVE to do today and tomorrow. I’m hungry due to all the over eating but must keep focused! Or watch Dr Pimple Popper which kills the appetite like nothing else..

absolutelyknackeredcow · 08/08/2022 18:32

Kitchen closed on 577 on day 1 of b2b
Felt a relief not to be eating cheese
See you all tomorrow folks

EatYourFive · 08/08/2022 19:06

Well done @absolutelyknackeredcow, first FD after hols is usually hard work!
Kitchen closed at 444 here for a single FD, back again on Wednesday for a b2b.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 08/08/2022 19:15

Thanks @EatYourFive ! Xx

CrabPuff · 08/08/2022 20:49

Kitchen closed on 658 today. I cannot see how I’m going to do another one tomorrow at this moment in time. If I hadn’t been so greedy this weekend I’m sure I wouldn’t be as hungry as I am now!

anyway, I’ll check in tomorrow and confess/boast depending on what happens..

mumlikeaboss · 08/08/2022 21:02

Made it to 27 hours and gave in to the urge to eat cheese...!!

Tried for a few minutes to just call it a day after a big chunk of cheese - could have called it a modified fast as would have been under 500 cals... But honestly once I've eaten ANYTHING that just wakes up my stomach and I can't rest until I've eaten a decent amount - so I ended up joining in with the others and having cheese & bacon quiche and home-made apple & blackberry crumble 🙈

Not really sure why I caved, except holiday stress is a real thing 😏😏
Stupid though, because I was so close to bedtime! 😩

mumlikeaboss · 08/08/2022 21:04

Well done everyone who got through the day... Admire all of you keeping to 500-ish calories, honestly don't know how you do it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 08:53

Good drop over night - 3lbs from yesterdays weigh in. I knew it was mainly wine bloat
Feeling strong today
Anyone fasting with me?

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2022 09:17

I wish I was... I need to! But I'm starving this morning and grumpy as heck, so maybe TOTM and I might just be lenient with myself.

Haven't even made it to a 12-hour fast yet because I was snacking so late into the evening 🙈 but trying to hold off just for a bit longer...

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 09:52

@mumlikeaboss
How long have you been fasting ?
I do find it very easy now but I have been doing it for years and my body is used to it
After a couple of weeks of eating cheese not fasting, my body just craves it

Badlifeday · 09/08/2022 09:56

When I am wavering I tell myself - You can have whatever you want to eat, you're just having it tomorrow, not today.

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2022 10:18

@absolutelyknackeredcow I started IF-ing November 2020 and have mostly done daily eating windows ranging from 16:8 to 23:1 - sometimes used to alternate 16/18 hour fasts with longer ones up to 26/28.

Lost over 50lbs doing that but stuck there and yoyo-ed up and down a few pounds for MONTHS, so decided to try ADF to see if that helped...

Done 4:3 for around 5 weeks now and haven't found it difficult at all, as I was used to going 24-ish hours without food and to add another 12 hours (most of which I was sleeping) wasn't too hard.

So I don't really know why I'm struggling this week 🤷🏼‍♀️ it's not just the physical hunger - I'm well used to that and am fine with dealing with the waves, etc. - but some days are psychologically incredibly hard, and today seems to be one of them!!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 10:19

Be kind to yourself - there is always a reason if you can't fast - and there is always another day!

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2022 10:22

Should also say that I have at least another 50lbs to lose... Doing 4:3 for a month has helped me drop 10+ pounds so I'm dead chuffed with that and want to keep going!

Just can't get my head in gear today, and fasting is mostly psychological... 🙄

mumlikeaboss · 09/08/2022 10:23

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 10:19

Be kind to yourself - there is always a reason if you can't fast - and there is always another day!

Yes. Thank you.

I know that's true, and would absolutely tell someone else that - I just find it hard to give myself permission to change my plans!

CrabPuff · 09/08/2022 11:12

I am still trying to work out if today is my 2nd day of a B2B - I have a 90 min meeting this afternoon and a bit of travel time afterwards so if I can defer my eating til after that, it’ll be much easier. I fully intended on a slice of toast thick with melty peanut butter but haven’t succumbed yet.

miso aubergine this evening I think anyway. And I’ll come and report back. I’ll be annoyed tomorrow if I don’t do today because really it’s not actually THAT hard to manage it in order to eat how you like (on the whole) for the rest of the week.

emmsyg · 09/08/2022 13:14

I haven't checked in for a while but just wanted to say I'm still here and fasting away 😂Below 12st for the first time in a long time today so super happy to be back in the 11st something range! I know I could be losing faster if I tried harder, but I like that it doesn't seem hard so am accepting the slower rate for now.

I don't think I'm going to hit my 40lb by 40 target, but I don't really mind now, should get there by the end of the year, and 40lb in a year's not bad.

Feel so much better, old clothes are fitting again, running is easier and I've got two half marathons coming up in Sept/Oct, so feeling much healthier generally. This is the longest I've managed to stick with fasting and its really easy now!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 14:44

Wow @emmsyg that's fab progress - well done
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Keep going @CrabPuff

Badlifeday · 09/08/2022 15:37

It's great hearing from someone who's kept it going! I've done so many short term diets, I need something I can just stick with long term (and it will take a long time to lose all the weight I need to lose).
Ive noticed I'm not doing much exercise at all, just walking and not even much of that!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 09/08/2022 17:47

Kitchen closed on 600 on day 2
@Badlifeday - I have never managed to 'maintain ' so when I'm not wanting to lose I just still 5:2 and don't watch what I eat on other days

CrabPuff · 09/08/2022 20:20

absolutelyknackeredcow - well done! A whole 50 calories to spare even!

I also love reading about successes.

So the kitchen is closed at 633 in theory. The practice may be that I burst through the kitchen door like a hangry member of the Flying Squad but so far so good.

I have done every household chore under the sun to distract myself, drove home the trafficky way and I WILL have that toast and peanut butter tomorrow!

Miso aubergine is not all that, but challenging yourself to get the flesh out with only a spoon to slow yourself down is quite effective.

night all!

EatYourFive · 10/08/2022 06:30

Well done yesterday's fasters.
I'm fasting today but not sure I will manage a b2b, this heat is making fasting more challenging and the ice cold sugary drinks harder to resist!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 10/08/2022 07:25

Enjoy that toast @CrabPuff
Managed to get back to target weight following the b2b which is great but I still feel a bit bloated
Might do a single on Friday just to help

EatYourFive · 10/08/2022 09:55

Excellent work @absolutelyknackeredcow!
I think today's fast is going to be a struggle, feeling hungry already..

EatYourFive · 10/08/2022 16:48

No other fasters here today?
I'm determined to get through today but it's been a struggle so I doubt I will be doing another day tomorrow. At least it's still two FDs this week even if not B2B.
