Fasting / 5:2 diet

Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

You can definitely do this - I was very moody yesterday and so hungry but distraction did it. You will be SO PLEASED tomorrow if you can just shrug off temptation today. Not long to go now. I recommend the most absorbing tv or book you can find or a phone call to a friend who wants you to really listen… and lots of water. If you’re not full from it, you’ll be on the loo.

Ugh... weds and Thurs fd planned because of house guests sun-weds morning. Only for DH to invite a friend of his to stay weds-fri 🙈 so I'm doing half fasts (ie no breakfast and 200 cap lunch) to limit damage and will do 3 x fd next week. Best laid plans and all that...

My week so far has not gone to plan (fasting wise) so I sympathise @harriethoyle

It's been so hot and we've been super busy and spent a lot of time with friends, so social eating happened... 😏

Anyway, I'm back home now, so guys - tomorrow I fast!!

I'm going to make a cup of tea and take it to bed so I am further away from the kitchen! Exercised more (ie, at all) today than I usually do on a fast day, and it is SO hot!

I've got pilates later this morning but don't have trouble doing that fasted as it's fairly gentle!

Well today's fast is a breeze so far! Had a fairly hardcore pilates session earlier (just been moved up to a higher level so it was more challenging than usual!) and felt amazing after. Only just felt a bit hungry in the last half hour or so and a black coffee has sorted me 👍🏻

So weird how some days my body just rebels against fasting. I do get days like that every so often, and almost every time I panic and feel like I've done something wrong... 🙄

I guess it's because I have a long history of failing time and time again to diet and lose weight - and of course having read things like The Obesity Code I now know WHY standard diets fail! - but still when I have a bad week or struggle with a fast now and then, it brings back all those old feelings of failure. And with that comes the fear that IF will "stop working" and I'll be stuck forever with excess weight and health issues.

Anyway, sorry for long boring rambles. Just wanted to say thanks again to @absolutelyknackeredcow (I think?) for reminding me that there's usually a reason for finding a fast difficult - it's not just me being weak-willed!

Going to have a big salad soon and maybe a lolly!

@mumlikeaboss - yes was me. I always say to new fasters that I can usually tell within the first few hours whether your body is up for it. Sometimes it's not - that's ok and you just jeee to find another day xx

Done! Brilliantly DH - who is normally in the “whoops, my turn to cook again? Let’s just get a takeaway” camp - made a miso and ginger mackerel dish which was brilliant for today. I ate it twice and left very little for him Grin. Plus tonnes of ice water, ice coffee and, er, ice.

I'm here 🙋🏼‍♀️ and about 19 hours in so far. Got tonnes to do today so will be glad of the fasting power... But lots of black coffee needed as the kids are full of holiday stupidity!! 😤

Full fasts have been very sporadic the last fortnight, have only managed one a week... But have tried to do a 16/18 hour fast on the other days to limit damage.

Am about 1.5lbs up over those 2 weeks, so really not that bad considering what I've been eating! 😱 But I'm hovering just over 230lbs and want to get comfortably back under that instead of creeping up higher every week.

Anyway, fingers crossed I'll get 2 or 3 fasts in this week 🤞🏻
