Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I'm similar @EatYourFive - 0.8kg down on last Friday but still need to get rid of last 0.7kg of holiday weight.

Have guests staying m-t and a couple of days off so I'll do Wed and thurs next week and then back to usual 3 week after til I'm back again target!

BRING ON FRIDAY WINE TIME 😂

Excellent work @harriethoyle !
I will be doing Monday and then Wednesday-Thursday next week in preparation for my holiday mountain.

Can't wait for wine o''clock tonight!😁What's your choice of wine for today? I usually prefer rose or dry white but think I will opt for some Malbec with my curry tonight.

mumlikeaboss · 05/08/2022 14:22

Curry and wine sounds yum 🤤 although I have a totally pathetic alcohol tolerance, so hardly ever drink 🙄🙄

19 hours in to today's fast and thankfully feeling a lot better than yesterday! So I'm glad I didn't push it yesterday - obviously needed to ease back into it.

Going to give DH and kids lasagne tonight, which I wouldn't have anyway because I mostly don't eat wheat. So I think I'm pretty much past the danger zone.

Will weigh in tomorrow and assess the holiday damage... 😬😬🤞🏻🤞🏻

EatYourFive · 05/08/2022 14:43

That's great news @mumlikeaboss ! I have never managed a Friday or weekend FD so I'm impressed by anyone who does that. Hope the rest of the day goes just as smoothly!

harriethoyle · 05/08/2022 16:31

I'm going red too @EatYourFive . have you an aldi near you? I can recommend some excellent pinks if so...

My weigh in yesterday morning was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting to be more than the last one as it was the first time I'd weighed myself since having a few weeks off but I was somehow 1.6 pounds lighter than my last weigh in. I'm now a wee slip of a thing with a BMI of mere 27.6. I was over 30 at the start of the year.

Lilithslove · 05/08/2022 17:07

@mumlikeaboss I'm in awe of the fact you can cook a lasagna for others and still fast!!! How???

Lilithslove · 05/08/2022 17:12

We're having a BBQ with dsds and a couple of our friends. I'm going for prosecco when they arrive then some nice sauvignon blanc.

mumlikeaboss · 05/08/2022 17:45

@Lilithslove this is a cheat version from the freezer 🤣🤣 so I haven't had to slave over the hob cooking it!!

It does smell pretty good, I have to say - but honestly once I've got this far on a fast day and not eaten anything, I'm on the home run. I'm not going to cave at dinnertime and ruin a day's fasting unless I physically feel really off (like I did yesterday)!

mumlikeaboss · 05/08/2022 17:53

Oh and well done on your inadvertent weight loss! 😁😁 Always nice to jump on the scales and see a LOWER number than expected.

Envious of your BMI too - mine is just under 31 at the moment, so to get into the 'overweight' category will make me super happy. It was 38.9 in 2020 before I started fasting 😱😱 so I'm very happy with the progress I've made, just excited to not be obese anymore!

EatYourFive · 05/08/2022 18:51

Well done @Lilithslove that's excellent! Feels so great to see some results doesn't it!

@harriethoyle yes we do have an Aldi nearby and as it happens I have been planning to start shopping there instead of our local Tesco to save some money. Keep putting it off though as new shops are a challenge to start with as you can't find anything or aren't familiar with their brands so any recommendations (wine or other things) would be most welcome!

Badlifeday · 06/08/2022 09:45

I really have to stop weighing myself after every fast day, the disappointment is too much! Still haven't returned to my pre-holiday, pre-covid weight. But moving in right direction, at least. Happy fasting today to all doing it.

mumlikeaboss · 06/08/2022 10:13

No fasting for me over the weekend :) gl to any who are.

I'm half a pound up this morning from last Saturday - chuffed with that, as it means essentially I've maintained with only one proper fast day all week!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/08/2022 07:47

Hello, signing in. Just back from a holiday to somewhere with all the cake and up since 4am so really don’t fancy it but having a go.

Badlifeday · 07/08/2022 11:38

@TheWayTheLightFalls I'm fasting today too, handhold! You can't have been to a place with all the cake as I've been having a fair bit of cake here!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 07/08/2022 12:03

@Badlifeday Grin Good luck today!

ShrinkingVioIet · 07/08/2022 12:08

Bit of a long-time 5:2 yo-yo-er back again before I officially step back into an overweight BMI. Maintenance that was going quite well has slipped, brought home to me when I put a shirt on this week that can only be described as "snug" around the waist. Stretch jeans have a lot to answer for when it comes to denial!

I need to reacquaint myself with MFP and portion control but my biggest downfall is late night grazing which I officially quit (again) on Friday. I'm not a snacker at other times having been successfully weaned off that here several years ago.

I have always found FDs very hard so i'm going to start with 2 x 800 days per week and try to keep to 1200 calories the other days which is only 80 calories over my sofa-surfing TDEE. MFP tells me that I can expect to lose 0.2kg per week although fingers crossed I have water-weight to lose so can expect the first kg to go way before the predicted 11 September!

Watching the Commonwealth Games has inspired me to get back to C25K so that will be my exercise goal.

Hope everyone's enjoying their weekend. BBQ here this evening so will be avoiding the carbs to limit the calories.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 08/08/2022 08:06

Hell

absolutelyknackeredcow · 08/08/2022 08:10

Hello - not hell ! Back from holidays in France for a fortnight and pretty much have become solid cheese Blush I'm five pounds up on my target weight which frankly is a bit of a miracle as I was expecting loads more. Definitely really bloated with a whole lot of water wine weight
Planning a b2b today and tomorrow and probably one on Friday. Hopefully that will
Shift it

mumlikeaboss · 08/08/2022 10:33

Sounds delicious @absolutelyknackeredcow 🤩🧀

I'm in for a Monday fast. Might be tricky because staying away this week... I'm with family, who know I fast, but there will likely be yummy food around that might make me change my mind 🙄

Badlifeday · 08/08/2022 10:35

I like the idea of being made of cheese!
scales finally shifted downwards (2lbs) so am ok with that.

EatYourFive · 08/08/2022 11:03

I'm here for a Monday fast as well, one last push before two weeks of holiday! Kind of glad I'm not going to France this time, I know from past experience that huge daily intake of cheese, white bread and red wine is impossible to say no to!

Lilithslove · 08/08/2022 11:26

I had planned to fast today but my period is about to start and I am having quite bad pains so I might defer. I will see how I go as I haven't eaten yet but am pretty miserable without adding being hungry on top of it!

absolutelyknackeredcow · 08/08/2022 11:31

Yah loads of Monday fasters !

SydneyCarton · 08/08/2022 13:12

Last day of holiday here, no fasting but haven’t eaten too badly overall. We’re in a hotel so no snacking (my self catering downfall!), lots of walking and swimming in the sea and hotel pool. We don’t have a full length mirror at home but I was pleasantly surprised by the view in the one in the hotel bedroom and by photos of me in my swimming costume. Can definitely see a difference in my leg muscles from running.

will try to get some runs in the next few days and then off on a second break for a few days, self catering this time so will try to resist loading up with snacks and wine 🍷 🤣
