Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I’m in for a fast today! Have done a cardio session so anticipating a lot of hunger but have lined up a lot of vegetables to stave it off. Marmite hot drink too if needed.

i quite often feel like I don’t fancy it but once you’re in bed and have stayed within the calorie range (and are planning a great and guilt free breakfast!) it is SO worth it.

EatYourFive · 03/08/2022 12:03

I also went for a run first thing this morning so feeling quite hungry now.

Don't think I ever look forward to a fast day/days but it does feel good when you get to the end of it. I also love how it makes breakfast taste so amazing the day after. Kind of wish I was still on maternity leave and could meet a friend for a fancy mid-week breakfast/brunch! Unfortunately working full time now so no chance for a post-FD brunch.😕

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 15:38

My resolve to fast is wavering ...

CrabPuff · 03/08/2022 16:07

Don’t waver! You can do anything for 24 hours - you’ll be so pissed off with yourself. You can have what you want to eat tomorrow - just get through today. It’s not like you have to “diet” every day - just today. Then you’ll feel brilliant tomorrow and guilt free and not on a diet tomorrow.

EatYourFive · 03/08/2022 16:20

Keep going @Lilithslove! You are already half way there, have an early night tonight and you will feel great tomorrow morning! You can do this!

I am also feeling rather hungry, have wasted lots of calories on milky coffee today and saving the remaining ones for dinner.

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 16:37

Thank you I am doing my best. It's a bit earlier than usual but I might have my ommelette in a minute and try and put thoughts of chips from my mind.

harriethoyle · 03/08/2022 17:27

You're practically there @Lilithslove only 4 ish hours before bed. You can do it!

EatYourFive · 03/08/2022 20:10

Kitchen closed at 550. Not looking forward to another day of fasting tomorrow. 🙄
Hope you made it @Lilithslove! How did you get on @CrabPuff?

CrabPuff · 03/08/2022 20:52

Kitchen closed on 533 - teeth brushed and in bed so I don’t fall into the hot chocolate.

this is the point where I’m so glad I didn’t cave at 7pm because I’d have to go through FD 2 again after so much virtue.

I reckon I’m in for a B2B on Monday and Tuesday next week - so sympathies for tomorrow EatYourFive and as ever, very impressed with a third FD Harriet!

omelettes are such a good FD meal - I’d forgotten about them, so a good reminder. Lots of onion, mushrooms and spinach and two good eggs and it’s so filling for the calories. Might try that on Monday!

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 20:59

I am still hanging in there @EatYourFive! Looking forward to eating more tomorrow.

@CrabPuff when I have an ommelette I sometimes add one whole egg and one white and then add one of those miniature cheddars - 83 calories for 20g - which I think makes it a lot more satisfying.

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 21:00

Actually that has made me think - maybe it would be good to have a separate thread where we can post recipes and food for 500 calorie days. Things like this tend to get lost in the main thread and might be good for inspiration. I will start one now!

harriethoyle · 03/08/2022 21:36

@CrabPuff well done - an excellent FD. I'll channel you tomorrow! Fab willpower @Lilithslove and recipe thread sounds a great idea.

@EatYourFive I'll check in with you tomorrow morning 👌

Well done everyone who fasted today!

I wish I did 🙈 but was in the car pretty much all day and that just triggers me to eat a whole load of junk... 🙄

So I'm in for a full fast tomorrow instead!

harriethoyle · 04/08/2022 07:39

Morning @mumlikeaboss and @EatYourFive - Thursday FD roll call!

We've got this... 👍

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 04/08/2022 07:45

Good morning!! Here for 3rd fast of the week and feeling rather hungry today!
Good luck today @harriethoyle and @mumlikeaboss and anyone else who's joining in, we can do this!

mumlikeaboss · 04/08/2022 11:44

I'm here 🙋🏼‍♀️ feeling absolutely fine so far on just black coffee and water.

Had a SUPER hungry patch a bit earlier - think that comes from mainlining carbs yesterday 🙄😁 - but it's passed now. The fact that hunger comes in waves is what makes it so bearable, it was such a revelation when I started fasting and realised that hunger actually comes and goes instead of getting worse and worse!

EatYourFive · 04/08/2022 13:54

I'm currently in yhe midst of the super hungry patch. To make it worse had to pop into the supermarket at lunch time for some bits for the family, I hate shopping on FDs.
Have so far only had milky coffees and an apple, saving the calories for dinner time.

mumlikeaboss · 04/08/2022 15:15

Yep shopping on fast days can be fatal!!!

Hungry again this afternoon, and SO TIRED 😴 which is unusual as I'd mostly been finding I had more energy when fasting... My theory is that my body is unwilling to switch over to fat-burning after several days of eating more and fasting not very much at all!

But I'm a bit gutted because I'd been finding it pretty easy and today feels like a struggle... 🙄

EatYourFive · 04/08/2022 15:40

I felt better for a bit after (yet another) coffee but so hungry again, can barely get any work done. Not sure why today is so difficult, was quite easy last week. Didn't even exercise today.

I have already planned tomorrow's breakfast AND dinner and bought some wine earlier as well.
Early night tonight for sure!

mumlikeaboss · 04/08/2022 17:01

I've totally just switched gears and decided to do OMAD today 🙈🙈

Think maybe diving right into a 40-hour fast after a 5-day holiday was a bit too hardcore?! Anyway I just felt absolutely exhausted and draggy and that was worse than the hunger TBH.

Just had some cheese & oatcakes and feel a bit better... Got a chicken panang curry and rice for dinner in an hour or so, then will get an early night and try again for a full fast tomorrow!

Hope you manage to stick with it, @EatYourFive

EatYourFive · 04/08/2022 19:25

Oh well better luck next week @mumlikeaboss.
I persevered. Kitchen closed at 650. Dinner was a tin of tomato soup with some bread.

How did you get on @harriethoyle?

harriethoyle · 04/08/2022 20:24

Good work @EatYourFive ! Kitchen closed here on 489 but I am freaking starving!

Tomorrow is veda toast for breakfast and pizza and wine for dinner. Cannot WAIT. 🍷🍕

Good luck tomorrow @mumlikeaboss - but no shame in skipping a Friday fast which I find tortuous!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 04/08/2022 20:52

Well done @harriethoyle!
The soup was quite filling so not feeling too bad at the moment. Also looking forward to tomorrow's breakfast and dinner (curry and some wine 😊).
Well done, fingers crossed for some overnight loss!

mumlikeaboss · 04/08/2022 21:19

@harriethoyle yes we'll see how it goes! May have to take the kids out somewhere for the day - it's easier if I'm not at home, I think.

I shan't beat myself up if it turns into another OMAD - I got a full 21 hours of clean fasting in today, so I'm happy with that... But honestly I want to get a whole day done because the 4:3 pattern was helping so much with appetite regulation! I'm all out of whack again after being away, and I hate how the mindless munching returns so quickly.

EatYourFive · 05/08/2022 07:16

0.5 kg down from this time last week, very happy with that.

Good luck today @mumlikeaboss if you're fasting!
I'll be back here on Monday, doing another 3 days next week before two weeks of holiday (and no fasting..).
