Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

I've managed 3 fasts this week (assuming I make it to the end of today!) and am finding myself getting increasingly grumpy on fast days. I mean, this might be to do with other reasons but knowing there is nothing nice coming my way at any point in the day seems to be upping by angry mode.

mumlikeaboss · 31/07/2022 23:09

@Badlifeday is there anything you look forward to about the fast days? Do they make you feel healthier / more energetic, anything at all that's a positive?

Or even just looking forward to the day after when you can relax more with your eating?

I have actually grown to quite enjoy my fasting days because I have noticeably more energy and just feel lighter and brighter... Plus I enjoy planning nice things to eat the following day, without needing to stress about counting or tracking anything.

I HATED fast days when I originally tried doing them last year... but in hindsight I think maybe I just wasn't adjusted properly to fasting so it felt super difficult psychologically??

mumlikeaboss · 31/07/2022 23:11

I managed to unobtrusively skip breakfast this morning without upsetting my hosts 😁 which meant I had a good 18-hour fast before eating at lunchtime - so well chuffed with that! Will see if I can do similar for the rest of the trip, and hopefully that'll be sufficient damage-limitation. 🤞🏻

Badlifeday · 31/07/2022 23:20

@mumlikeaboss thank you, I'm just in a grump-fest I think as I'm still recovering from covid.
I do love the fact that I can do it, I don't fail like I have done with diets so often. So even at this rather low point, there is that!

EatYourFive · 01/08/2022 07:50

Good morning, checking in for FD1 out of 3 this week. Who's with me today?

Aww, hope you feel better soon xx

I have to say, NONE of the other diets I've ever been on have been sustainable in the long term... Not Weight Watchers, not Slimming World, not keto, not low-calorie, none of them. So however effective they are whilst I'm strictly following the plan, they are in reality doomed to fail because I have no desire to eat that way or count/track food for the rest of my life.

Whereas fasting is so so sustainable by comparison - I will happily incorporate it for the rest of my life, and it's so easy to adapt it to whatever else is happening on a given day. You can change how long you fast. You can change what you eat between fasts. You can aim for a daily x-hour fast or go for an up/down day weekly approach. It's so flexible!!

And that is why even if I don't lose another pound, I'm going to carry on doing this 🙌🏼

Lilithslove · 01/08/2022 11:40

Hi everyone. I did this at the beginning of the year and posted here under a different user name. I lost over a stond which i have mostly maintained but I'm back to try and get rid of the last stone.

I'll be eating a prawn and veg stir fry later. And will snack on carrots, an egg and a nectarine.

CrabPuff · 01/08/2022 11:45

Checking in for a 500 cal FD - veg soup to be had for lunch then fish this evening. Miso soup and lots of tea to tide me over in between if necessary.

harriethoyle · 01/08/2022 12:06

I'm fasting today too! Lots of black coffee thus far, and feeling strong

OP posts:
Lilithslove · 01/08/2022 16:23

Alas @harriethoyle I find coffee exacerbates my post fasting insomnia so I have to limit myself to one in the morning even on fast days.

harriethoyle · 01/08/2022 19:35

That's bad luck @Lilithslove it's my FD saviour.

Kitchen closing at 698. Which leaves 600 for tomorrow. Doable!

EatYourFive · 01/08/2022 20:24

Kitchen closed ar 430 for a single fast. Back here for a B2B on Wednesday.
I also have lots of coffee on my FDs, sometimes it counts for almost half of my daily calories as I like it milky!

harriethoyle · 01/08/2022 20:25

I'll see you on Thursday @EatYourFive for our 3rd FD!

CrabPuff · 01/08/2022 20:30

Kitchen closed on 533 - not too hard today, which I think may be down to not doing cardio this morning. I’ve got it planned for Weds so we’ll see if it’s harder. Meantime, looking forward to breakfast!

harriethoyle · 02/08/2022 07:48

0.9kg off overnight, almost back to last week's end weight so anything else lost this week will chip away at holiday gain 🤞

Kitchen closing here on 598. Can't wait for tomorrow's breakfast!

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 02/08/2022 22:11

Very impressive! I do find this WOE does make breakfast utterly glorious.

My NFD was a bit high in calories. I will do my next FD tomorrow I think. Was thinking Thursday as on a train for quite a bit of it but have to socialise in the evening.

Badlifeday · 02/08/2022 23:38

Fasting helps my sleep as I just want to go to bed early to get closer to breakfast!

mumlikeaboss · 03/08/2022 00:01

4 eating days on the trot and I'm ready for a fast... 🥴

Saying that, we will be driving most of the day tomorrow and I'm just not sure that I'll manage to avoid boredom eating!! 😬

I think I will attempt to make it a fast day, but we'll see what happens...

harriethoyle · 03/08/2022 07:37

Yes @CrabPuff there's nothing like the excitement of planning your post FD brekkie 🤣

Another 0.6kg of the holiday Mountain off and back tomorrow for 3rd FD of the week to try and whittle a bit more.

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 03/08/2022 07:59

Well done @harriethoyle! Hopefully my upcoming holiday mountain will be as easy to shift!

Here for Day 1 b2b, anyone else fasting today?

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 10:18

I m fasting - I really don't want to!. Hopefully it will get easier again once I am back in the routine of it.

EatYourFive · 03/08/2022 10:35

@Lilithslove are you back to fasting after a break? I'm trying to really push for it this and next week before I'm off for a holiday.
Starving already!

Lilithslove · 03/08/2022 10:46

Yes I was on this thread before with a different user name. I lost just over a stone earlier in the year. I am hoping to shift another!

Badlifeday · 03/08/2022 10:47

Non-fasting day for me - trying not to turn it into a "feast" day lol.
I do feel like I want to eat loads in the morning for energy though
