Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!

Kitchen closing on 607. Today has been SO BUSY so it's been quite easy. We'll see how tomorrow is... thinking about usual thin sandwich for lunch and maybe an omeletter for tea as I have eggs, ham, spring onion to use up. We'll see...

@Catsrus fabulous to hear 🤩 - that sounds exactly like how I envisage myself maintaining. I've just been so excited about this whole thing ever since I read The Obesity Code in 2020 and realised I never needed to diet again!!

Side note, I've been reading through some of the really old 5:2 threads just for fun, and I recognised your name straight away! 😁 So fun to feel like I've seen your success story pan out 👏🏻

Are there many others on here who've been around since the original 2012/2013 threads?

CrabPuff · 27/07/2022 21:14

kitchen closed on 567 - I don't think I could manage a B2B tomorrow but I’ll try for a mini I think.

last time I did 5:2 consistently, I lost a stone and a half. While the 2 might take a bit of readjusting to, it is SUCH a good way of eating without being antisocial, a guest who is either a pain to cook for or just has to eat carbs / dairy / whatever and then fall off the wagon. It just fits so much better than other things.

now very much going to bed!

EatYourFive · 27/07/2022 21:25

Kitchen closes at 584. Back here tomorrow for Day 2. Good work @harriethoyle, hopefully you'll see some positive results Friday morning!

harriethoyle · 28/07/2022 07:57

Morning @EatYourFive I'm here! 1.5kg overnight, thank GOD 🤣

OP posts:
harriethoyle · 28/07/2022 07:58

1.5kg off! That should say!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 28/07/2022 09:27

Wow well done @harriethoyle that's a good outcome! No loss for me overnight but hoping to shed some before tomorrow morning, we'll see. Good luck today!

harriethoyle · 28/07/2022 09:37

Well I suspect it's all water retention @EatYourFive but it's reassuring to see a plummet after yesterday's 3.5kg "gain" 🤣

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 28/07/2022 09:46

Yes definitely! I hope I can get to below 60 kg before my holiday in two weeks. Fully expecting to gain a few kilos whilst away but hoping it would come off fairly quickly. Luckily planning a more active holiday this time, at least for some of the time, rather than just reading a book on a sun lounger for two weeks! 😀

harriethoyle · 28/07/2022 19:34

I'd kill for two weeks on a sun lounger @EatYourFive 🤣 I'm just about to start a new job and so we've had to postpone planned Sept trip to France and I'm regretting it now... 🙈 roll on October half term!

Kitchen closed here on 643. 1250 for the b2b. Come on scales!

mumlikeaboss · 28/07/2022 20:53

Feel bloated and yuk after eating today... Didn't eat anything terribly unhealthy, but it's just not sitting well in my stomach for some reason 😣 Think there are some foods I should avoid (other than wheat/gluten which I already avoid) but it's really hard to work out what.

Anyway, REALLY looking forward to my fast day tomorrow 😯😆 never thought I'd actually want to not eat for a whole day!!!

harriethoyle · 28/07/2022 20:54

Have you got any peppermint tea @mumlikeaboss ? Might help debloat you a bit. Or ginger in hot water.

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 28/07/2022 20:59

Well done @harriethoyle and good luck with the new job, how exciting!

Kitchen closing here at something around 500.. didn't count but have survived on three milky coffees and a small bowl of beans. Starving now, really hope it's been worth it!!!

mumlikeaboss · 28/07/2022 21:03

Ooh I do have peppermint tea, that's a great idea. I've taken some charcoal capsules too, no idea if they do anything 😅😅

SydneyCarton · 28/07/2022 21:25

Kitchen closed on 705 after I massively underestimated the calories in a ridiculously small portion of crisps Hmm. Last FD before holidays so hoping for a loss tomorrow or at least no gain! Realistically I know I won’t fast properly over the next three weeks but might try and do the odd mini or 16:8 (not next week though, we’re in a hotel and I’m not missing out on a breakfast cooked by someone else!)

EatYourFive · 29/07/2022 07:10

Woohoo 59.9 kg!!!
I'll be back to 60+ after breakfast but don't care, so pleased to see the reading this morning!
Wine tonight to celebrate! 😁

harriethoyle · 29/07/2022 07:52

Fabulous @EatYourFive ! Well done!

Another 0.5kg off here, making a 2kg dint in the 3.5kg holiday mountain 🤣 three fasts next week should get that off with a following wind!

OP posts:
EatYourFive · 29/07/2022 08:42

Great news @harriethoyle you'll be back on track in no time!

I also plan to do 3 FDs next week.

SydneyCarton · 29/07/2022 12:02

Down to 139.8 pounds, losing a grand total of 0.6 pounds from last week😆and dipping back under 10 stone. Like @EatYourFive I'll be back to over 10 st by this evening (also wine, assuming my Tesco substitute is drinkable) but don't care! Well done harriet

mumlikeaboss · 29/07/2022 13:08

Last fast day for the week and I'm stressed and the DC's hot sausage rolls smell AMAZING 😭

But we're going away tomorrow and won't get a good fast in for 5 days so I really don't want to cave and eat anything.

Well done everyone on the losses, however small 😁

Badlifeday · 29/07/2022 15:51

Stay strong, @mumlikeaboss 😄

mumlikeaboss · 29/07/2022 21:49

Made it through 😁😁💪🏻

All packed up and safe in bed... And I have to say I was glad of the extra fasting energy all day ⚡

EatYourFive · 29/07/2022 23:19

Well done @mumlikeaboss! I admire those of you who successfully fast on Fridays or weekends, have never managed that myself.
Have a lovely weekend everyone and see you on Monday!

TheWayTheLightFalls · 31/07/2022 07:07

Signing in. Off on hols on Tuesday 😬

harriethoyle · 31/07/2022 20:39

Well done @TheWayTheLightFalls on a Sunday fast!

Anyone joining me in FD tomorrow?
